Was the Montreal Screwjob a work?
Corino made a comment that Montreal was a work and it got me thinking
He makes a good point about that documentary crew just happening to follow Bret around and a couple other points. Vince couldn't afford Bret's contract so is it possible that Vince Bret and company set this all up so Vince could transition into an onscreen role while Bret gets a huge payday? I thought it was retarded when he first said it but the more I think about it, it is plausible. Bret's am old schoool guy and would have kept the angle going although I'm sure the beef with Shawn is real, but if you think about it, everybody benefitted. Bret got a payday and wasn't going to go along with the Attitude Era, so Vince gets his new era, Shawn gets to be the top guy and Bret makes a shitload of cash. |

It's not a work. When you're the greatest rassler of all time there's always a documentary crew following you around. Vince screwed Bret and the documentary crew has the screwing on tape. Hardcore screw job. On tape.

It could be a work, but Brets wife looked legitimately pissed at HHH in the documentary. I don't know why why he wouldn't tell his wife, although I guess he didn't tell his wife about Sunny either.

On paper it screams work, everyone got something out of it, but you'd think somebody woulda let slip by now.

I just don't think anyone in the business is good enough to keep it going for so long, if it was a work I'm sure something would have come out about it.

Up until Bret went to WCW, and how he was used there, it couldn't have worked out any better really.

There's older wrestlers who still get furious if you say wrestling is fake. If they broke it now it'd make Bret looked more retarded than he does.

Bret said in the Hart DVD that he knew from day one it was going to be a mess. I think Bret just did it for a payday. His matches outside of Benoit and Flair weren't anything to write home about.

You could replace Bret with anything in that sentence and it will still be true.

X Pac/Waltman makes a really convincing argument about this and I've always kind of thought "hmmmm, he makes some really good points" but nah, I don't think it was. Or if it was, Bret's acting throughout and for the following 12 years far surpassed any acting he ever did on-screen as Bret "The Hitman" Hart. Plus the Julie ripping Hunter stuff, Davey and Anvil leaving etc.

Dunno if Vince couldn't really afford Bret's next payday. I see it more as Bret on the downside of his career and Vince not wanting to fully invest in him.

No but its somewhat possible it could have started as a worked shoot that went too far like Russo-Hogan.
Vince took a huge risk with the Screwjob to begin with but ended up lucking out that WCW became pretty incompetent within a year later and his new stars managed to become mega stars at the same time. |

I don't think it was a work. Why would Bret Hart agree to this? The huge WCW salary can't be the reason because Hart had already agreed to the WCW contract and was going to get that money whether the screwjob happened or not.

Yeah I don't buy that Vince couldn't afford Bret's next big payday. Wasn't there a rumor that they were trying to get Bret to sign some insane mega deal for like 20 years?

He signed the 20 year deal, Vince wanted him to get out of it and go to WCW.
So he could leave the company losing the title and not getting pinned. |

Steve Corino is a vanilla midget Gertner how dare you take quotes from him! Traitor! He's also never worked for the WWE in any capacity, so how would he know shit from shinola?

The guys who insist it's a work seem to be some of the most pathetic dregs of wrestling society, which is pretty much all I need to know.

The biggest thing I remember is Sunny playing with Bret's kid and Bret saying she was just a friend. Now that was a work.

I thought this may have been a bumped thread from 5 years ago. Does anyone still care about this after all the documentaries, conspiracy theories, and Bret even doing part-time shit with WWE a few years ago?

I still maintain that if it were indeed a work- one that involves the number of people, the scope, and the ammount of time that it does- someone would have spilled the beans years ago. Nobody is that tightlipped for that long. |

Bret Hart had the honor of a warrior. He wouldn't make this a work. He was learning how to do a HADOUKEN before goldenberg concussed him.
