The resurrection of Kayfabe?

This is a thing I have been thinking about for a few months, now. I feel like, after the Press Conference, now is a good time for it.

The Main reason why WWE has been coming back has had everything to do with good stories and people folks are invested in. People online are bitching about Roman's defenses in ways that are like "you know that is how it is BOOKED, right?" Cody's story has been less a single angle and more of a Hero's Journey.

I am starting to believe that, in 2024, Kayfabe is back.

Its been back for a while, both WWE and AEW have done decent job in places to keep people guessing and somewhat play the fans.

The challenge for both promotions is no matter the outcome a very vocal section of the world will shit all over the outcome as predictable and boring anyway. Sometimes thats true but with everyone online having a take a broken clock is still right twice a day and theres millions of broken clocks commenting on wrestling.

I just enjoy how wrong all the people that think they are real journalists have been.

Meltzer has no WWE sources. It makes Smeat cry, but it’s true. He spent years ragging on them, disrespecting the efforts of the talent and all that. Then something shiny comes along started by his buddies and he starts disproportionately valuing it.

Beyond that, WWE is a publicly traded company with professionals with no regard for the dirt sheets beyond using them as a tool at the top. CM Punk’s negotiations with WWE, for example, would have involved a very small room of people — NONE of whom would be talking to a fake a journalist.

As for kayfabe: Wrestling works better when promotions try to have some sort of integrity. It’s a large part of why AEW sucks pond water. Wrestling that trivializes itself in its own context is pointless. WWE does a better job not doing this these days, which is hilarious given that a lot of the performances are still clearly wooden and rehearsed/only possible within a realm of fiction.

The press conference was great. People talked like they were somewhat real (even if they have a flare for the over-dramatic and performative). The reasons for their conflict seem “real.” Good stuff. It’s not too much to ask.

When all the Rock/Cody drama was going on (which is found a bit annoying, because it was obvious they were going to do SOMETHING, you just had to wait to the press conference), I thought to myself that it would be great if WWE wrote articles about WHY the fans were reacting like that. Thread that in to the reality the wrestlers obviously exist in. Politics could be a valuable dimension to WWE programming — as long as they aren’t done like WCW.

Just treat it like it’s fucking real.
