Rate the Game: Week 136
Not proud of getting a late start to this but what can I do? Hike up your britches, y'all, because it's time for another week of this party. 10 weeks have passed since we've restarted this series and we're still on the hunt for more treasures worthy of elite status. Last week's Majora's Mask had a shot, but its final fate isn't so grand. Observe...




By landing on the number 65 spot, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask fares much better than most of the other games in recent editions, but it ultimately ends up as the lowest-scored game in the Legend of Zelda series...for now. I mean, there's no way there are any Zelda games that are so universally reviled and are infamous for their poor quality...on the CD-i, right?

Anyway, it's time for the ritual of the bowl. There has to be a legendary game still waiting to be plucked from its bowels, no? Let's give it a whirl...




Here we go. Capcom gets another turn at the barrel, but it's a different franchise than what they've got on our board so far. Not another fighting game or survival horror, it's...well, it's different. Grab your Celestial Brush because it's time to tackle Ōkami on the Playstation 2! The sun goddess Amaterasu made a splash with this entry into the video game world, but how big was it? Does this doggy have bite? Let's see what the good people of TPWW have to say about it all. 5/5. Underrated and overlooked PS2 classic. Also, OT, but the nerd in me loves that M-A-G went the extra mile to produce the ‘Ō’ character. 🤓

Okami was outstanding...until the back 2rd of the game. Unfortunately it becomes very grindy especially if youre a completionist and it hugely impacts how i feel about the game

Never played it but it was one of those games that I had been interested in potentially playing but never went through in doing so for some reason.

Speaking of fighting games, Tatsunoko vs. Capcom ends up being the most playing experience I've ever had with Okami by association since the final boss of TvC is Yami from Okami.

Also one of the cheapest final bosses in a fighting game I've ever played against due him having multiple forms and some really cheap big health bar depleting attacks.

His boss fight isn't that much different in the actual game. It's like 4 phases or so and he takes your abilities away.

If I remember correctly, I pretty much started cheesing the final boss fights in TvC after a while to help unlock everyone's endings faster than normally.

Would have one of the fighters be Ryu or someone who could spam projectile style attacks to whittle down Yami's health bar and then let that person purposely die right before the finishing blow so that the other person comes in with a full health bar and a bunch of specials stored up and then beat Yami with that person for the cheap ending unlock for their story.

Personally, I just love it when these Japanese companies put a lot of their folklore and culture into some of their games. It's a fun way to learn about stuff like that. Ōkami is, of course, littered with it, but then you've got stuff like the beetle hunting in Super Mario RPG or the various robot designs in Mega Man games. The Silent Hill games are also loaded with it. They're like little Easter eggs.

Okami is a Palamute skin in Monster Hunter Rise. that's the extent of my exposure. it's a very cool skin.
