EDIT: So the Neo is gong to be unveiled on September 7th at the Playstation Meeting most likely, so let's see what happens.





Who's in the house? It's Andrew House. It's not being shown at E3, but it exists.

Andrew House, president and global chief executive of Sony Interactive Entertainment, told the Financial Times that the “high-end PS4” would be more expensive than the current $350 version.

“It is intended to sit alongside and complement the standard PS4,” he said. “We will be selling both [versions] through the life cycle.”

The new console, which is codenamed “Neo”, will target hardcore gamers, he said, as well as consumers with a 4K television set looking for more high-resolution content.
However, in a move that may disappoint some fans, Mr House said that Sony would not be unveiling its new console next week and refused to say when or at what price the unit would go on sale. “We want to ensure we have a full range of the best experiences on the new system that we can showcase in their entirety,” he said.

Nonetheless, he downplayed concerns that the move would cause interoperability problems between the old and new PS4 hardware.

“All games will support the standard PS4 and we anticipate all or a very large majority of games will also support the high-end PS4,” he said.

I'm hardcore enough to own both xbone and ps4, but not enough to buy both upgraded versions. Will probably go with tne zbone since it's more powerful.

The fact that MS is going full PC and every single exclusive they have going to the PC is sending me the other way. My PC is of a higher spec than the rumoured Scorpio and if you have a desktop with an i5 2500 (a 5 year old CPU) or above, you can get better than Scorpio graphics with a 1070 costing $379.

PS4 still has Sony exclusives and those Japanese games that are exclusive by default due to not bothering with an XB1 version. The XBox One, upgraded or not, has no value to me anymore. I need to clear some of my backlog that won't be ported over and then sell it. I might keep it as a default 360 for the backwards compatibility stuff, but it's rumoured that might show up on PC too.

Still, it was the Elite XB1 so I've got the controller. No regrets in buying one here.

So now that this has been announced, I can now wait for the price of the standard PS4 to be lowered.

So the Hasney verdict, should you buy a PS4 Pro?

If you have a 4k TV: Yes, but if you want movies in the highest possible quality, maybe get a UHD blu ray player first
If you're getting PSVR: Fo' Sho, I think this will be a slam dunk
If you're sticking with 1080p: Super sampling and stable frame rates will be big upgrades, but for the price? Ehhh, depends on your cash

It seems crazy the new Xbox supports UHD BluRay but not the new PS4. I bet Sony doesn't like the fact it would canibalize their more expensive standalone players coming..all I can figure..

They used it in the PS4 for system RAM too. It works really well as they have an 8GB pool of super fast RAM that they can use for textures or anything.

When it was announced, Mark Cerny explained why they went with GDDR5 and honestly, it's one of the bigger things the PS4 has over the XB1 which just has 8GB DDR3 and 32MB of esRAM

Sony is currently dealing with some backlash after reports originally stated HDR patch support would cost money and Sony themselves not completely clarifying the situation.

At the moment, Sony will not charge for HDR game patches for the PS4 Pro but made no statement regarding 3rd parties being allowed to charge for it.

Source of the confusion is from a translation of a recent interview Sony had with Game Impress Watch.

Also according to a developer who posted on NeoGAF's forums, 3rd party developers can't pass the added patch fees to consumers and have to "eat" it in regards to additional costs.

Its just fast RAM that can be used for any purpose. Theoretically, if there were slots for it, you could use it as a PC system RAM. The only problem is that GDDR5 has much lower latency than standard DDR, which is fine if you take it into account while programming, but would be a pain in a PC system RAM pool.
