World of Sport picked up for 10 episode season

MANCHESTER | NASHVILLE – ITV Studios Entertainment Manchester announced today that it has teamed up with IMPACT Wrestling, a subsidiary of Anthem Sports & Entertainment Corp., to bring WOS Wrestling back to ITV, with an initial commission for a 10-part series.

The commission from ITV’s Helen Warner follows a successful one-off-special, which aired on New Year’s Eve 2016. The Executive Producers for ITV Studios are Tom McLennan and Simon Marsh. Jeff Jarrett, the Chief Creative Officer for IMPACT Wrestling, will be the Executive Producer for IMPACT Wrestling.

Thirty years after the original WOS ended – and legendary stars such as Big Daddy, Mick McManus and Rollerball Rocco left British screens – this new series will feature the very best of today’s wrestlers from the current red-hot U.K. wrestling scene.

They will compete in front of a live audience at the intimate Preston Guild Hall on Thursday 25th May and Friday 26th May (doors 7pm / bell time 7.30pm).

Tickets for these historic shows will go on sale at 9am on Friday 7th April from Gigsandtours.com / Ticketmaster.co.uk / prestonguildhall.co.uk

There will also be a launch event this Monday (27th March) at 2pm in Manchester, where the full details of the WOS live shows will be announced, including the roster. Press and fans are invited to attend to the launch, which will include a Q&A and meet & greet. Places are extremely limited, to reserve one please email wswaudience@itv.com

This initial commission is part of a comprehensive co-production agreement between ITV Studios and IMPACT Wrestling to relaunch the WOS Wrestling brand, bringing British stars to ITV while leveraging the roster and creative team of Impact Wrestling along with its expertise in live event production and international distribution.

“This opportunity to work with ITV Studios to revive this iconic brand in the United Kingdom is a perfect example of the ways in which we intend to leverage our strengths to build our presence in international markets in collaboration with local organizations,” said Ed Nordholm, President of Impact Wrestling.

Director of Entertainment, ITV Studios Manchester, Tom Mclennan said: “Britain’s wrestling scene is thriving and there has never been a better time to bring it back to ITV after a gap of 30 years.”

Jeff Jarrett, Chief Creative Officer for IMPACT Wrestling, added: “The WOS brand is etched in professional wrestling tradition. My family’s lineage in the industry dates back 70-plus years, so I am honoured for the opportunity to work on reviving the legacy of this historic British series"

Jeff Jarrett managed to carny his way in. Can't wait to see it be worse than the special.

Why not just cut to the chase and rename World of Sport to "TNA UK", because we all know that's what it's going to be.

Meltzer is reporting that WWE UK and WOS Wrestling talent won't be able to mix on other shows. That sounds fucked for bookers.

If true, that would immediately mean WOS can't use anybody from Progress, Fight Club Pro or ICW, the latter kind of being an issue since they put the belt on Grado.

Dunne, Bate and Seven are also everywhere right now so anyone joining WOS would be really fucked. WCPW would be the only other place they can really work without issue, but they can still work there and every other promotion if they don't go to WOS.

Everyone on the initial pilot signed deals, so it would be more Grado can't do ICW rather than the other way around.

Not good for bookers, but if this is on ITV proper on a Saturday evening then the exposure for the talent involved is going to be much, much bigger than anything the British indies can currently offer or even the WWE.

ITV may also cross promote with some of their other shows, like Celebrity Juice (shudder) or other panel shows which again provides exposure and work for those involved.

Anything that increases the reach of British wrestling is good though.

If guys are locked into contracts already then I hope ITV are paying them big money to make up for the lost work elsewhere. ICW would end the big loser here since they are partnered with WWE and a bunch of their guys worked the pilot.

If I see Dave Mastiff on Harry Hills Alien Fun Capsule, I'll be sold on the whole thing. Other than that, it'll depend on ratings and a 10 week series likely won't do anything for anyone. If it goes behind that, the guys there now probably made a shrewd move. I believe it was reported that they're one year contracts though, so they'd probably have limited dates they can work if this isn't picked up again.

Hopefully it translates into more US booking for these guys, because if they end up under contract and they only work 10 weeks a year for this and then the biggest UK indies can't use them, they'll have to make it up somewhere most likely, both in terms of finance and exposure.

Like I said, exposure, at least to a casual audience, is going to be significantly more on these shows. They will be a big draw to people who have seen them on ITV, reaching a much bigger audience than wrestlers who might have made one appearance on an ROH show or something.

Don't get me wrong, the WWE guys will be a bigger draw just for the name, but in terms of exposure this will help both the individuals involved and companies booking them.

Am I right in my understanding that they can appear on the same show as WWE guys but just not wrestle them?

Another question is will they be able to be shown through on-demand services? My understanding is the WWE guys can't be shown on-demand and possibly DVD, so while they might draw a live crowd they won't lead to further sales. No idea how much companies bank on that though.

Also, I saw CJ Banks and Sam Bailey at a show recently and both were fantastic, so looking forward to seeing more of them.

I'd take it as the WWE guys and WOS guys can't appear on the same show at all in any capacity due to the names appearing alongside each other on advertising, being mentioned together on commentary, etc. Especially when WWE want Tyler Bate out there showing off his championship.

The WWE guys are allowed to be shown on iPPV and the like but only for approved shows, ie. their partnered promotions ICW, Progress & Rev Pro. Not sure of any big non-WWE affiliated UK indies (except WCPW) who actually run the PPV / web show model though.

Of course then there's even the chance that ITV might want to pull their talent out of Whatculture too because they're putting out weekly online shows and then there's only smaller promotions left to work, providing they haven't booked any of the WWE lot.

Quite a few seem to do their shows 'on-demand' after the show. Attack!, who I've been to quite a few shows for, do theirs on Vimeo.

Example - The utterly fantastic Kris Travis Tag Team Invitational which can be found here: https://vimeo.com/ondemand/kttti

However on the second night Mandrews fought Kid Lycos (great match) but I don't think that could be uploaded to their Vimeo channel. This is despite the fact Attack is owned in part by Pete Dunne. Although I guess it is worth noting they did have Mandrews on the same show as some of the ITV talent even if it wasn't promoted or available online.

I've no idea how much money companies make that way, whether it is a side thing to make a couple of quid or an essential part of the business model. However it means they couldn't have any WWE talent headlining any of their shows any more, just making appearances.

If the same or similar will be true for the ITV contracted wrestlers, it will leave a much smaller pool.

Yeah if they are planning on keeping talent separate it definitely hasn't been put into practice yet, Trent Seven is defending the ICW Heavyweight Title against Joe Coffey at their next iPPV, also featuring Wolfgang vs Grado, and that's being heavily advertised.
