That is how I did my 1st playthrough. What'd you think?
Currently level 12 on my 2nd playthrough and heel run. Sticking to melee primarily. Been using a serrated machete and chained baseball bat until I find a sledge and/or can get Blacksmith level 2 (level 16 I think). A properly built melee character is tons better than a commando, IMO. For larger groups, some mines as contingency work amazingly well, especially for suicide super mutants. Smashing the shit outta everything is great, and with a STR, AGI, LUCK build, crits are up every 5-6 hits, so even heavily armored opponents go down with relative ease. The hardest encounter I have had so far was Fist at the top of Trinity Tower. His god damn minigun was ruthless. Used some molotovs and mines to wither away most of his health. He still had a skull by his name at my level, so I took a lot of damage quickly. Melee - the way to play |

In regards to your melee comment....Indeed it is. I never really used it until near the end, but my bladed 2076 World Series Bat made mincemeat of a certain faction and all of its members. And I mean ALL of them. I love when you hit a home run and get that nice satisfying sound effect of the crack of a wood bat on a ball. But it's really a metal doom stick cracking a skull. |

Instead of getting the same raiders or ghouls, if you have a high enough defense, you get super mutants, deathclaws, special fetch quests. Preston doesn't have any information to give you, just that the settlement is in trouble and needs help. And also, have the option to send someone to deal with the settlement instead of you. You could have a special Minute Man battalion you're training that you can send to the lower end stuff to clear out and they come back with caps, loot, and junk that you can use to upgrade them. Maybe we could use this for the next Fallout game. |

Wonder if anybody's started a settlement called "Flint, Michigan" yet and made the only bottled water Irradiated Water and made all other sources of H2O give people so many rads/sec. that you'd die in about 30 seconds, regardless of any Rad-X taken beforehand or supply on-hand of RadAway.

These things always look like terrible viral marketing deals, product placement at the end included. The dread sets in when it might actually be a real couple.

You're right. It looked like he was a girl but he's a hair stylist.
Anyway, it's not about 'doing something nice', it's about how it's photographed to where it's indistinguishable from paid marketing. |

Cleared Dunwich Borers last night. Damn that place is very awesome. Lotsa fights, longest "areas" I have been to and also very interesting lore that they bring to the forefront. The Legendary sword/knife at the end is well worth it. Have a hazmat suit OR the Aquaboy perk though.
Good stuff. |

I agree on the Dunwich Borers part, interesting part of the game. And on the knife too, I use it to slice up any Raider attackers at settlements. It's my go-to melee weapon for weak enemies and sneaking around.

Restarted and currently doing a no fast travel (except when going back to sanctuary to offload junk) playthrough. So many more things happen when they game just runs. Any other interesting areas you have come across? I know about the Witchcraft museum and robot races, but to me, they don't even come close to Dunwich. |

A cool thing about that knife is that if you find another random legendary machete/blade weapon, you can take the 'sacrificial blade' mod off of the one from Dunwich and put it onto the other weapon as its mod and end up having 2 legendary effects on the same weapon. One of the very few instances in the game where this applies.

I'll have a think about that. I tend to just wander around in the game discovering locations and do a few random quests at a time so I find a lot of places that probably aren't too relevant initially, so I don't really know if they crop up further down the line in the main mission. I am pretty much 40 hours into my only playthrough of the game but on the main quest I'm just at the point where I have got to Diamond City and I'm supposed to find Valentine.

I played the same way you are. I had to return to a few places every now and then but far fewer than I expected to tbh. Seems like most of the story locations are pretty well locked up for the most part until you progress to them anyways.

I was like level 54ish maybe when I finally started the quest to find Valentine that you referenced if that is any indication of how much random exploring I did.

Found like two settlement areas just wandering around. One was on the coast with a nice bombed out house and a shed that doesn't offer too much in the way of a settlement and the other is in a swamp south of Quincy with a Mirelurk Queen hanging around it. Nice places both but not worth developing. Maybe the swamp area.
On the other hand, I keep wondering why the game doesn't have me develop Thicket Excavations. Its a nice hole that offers a lot of potential as city. Huge area and is perfect for a Mirelurk farm which a bunch of Raiders have proven. All the game keeps doing is sending me back to kill the raiders there. Surprised nobody's moved in that's friendly. |

Still have yet to encounter a single Mirelurk Queen. Plenty of Deathclaws, though no chameleon deathclaws.

As for Mirelurk Queens, I can tell you that the settlement tahat Shadow mentioned frequently spawns Mirelurk queens if it doesn't have enough defense and always has one initially. The southeastern shore of the large island on the map also is a guaranteed spawn point on first arrival and will also usually spawn one anyways. Be warned though, they suck asssssssssss. I hate fighting them, especially with kings running around as well. Almost as bad as the chameleon assaultrons. |

Uhg the battle at the top of Court 35. Assaultron and Sentry Bot battle in close quarters with fall to your doom edges in places. That battle was a bitch and a half.
