How do these work with Super Mario Maker? Do they allow you to specify what you actually get out of the amiibo mushroom, rather than it just being random. Is there anything else you can do to get that?

Yep. So normally if you just select the Mystery Mushroom and place it in a block, it will choose a random costume. If you select the mushroom you can specify a specific costume you'd like it to choose, based on what you have available.
You can unlock all of the costumes normally through playing 100-Mario Challenge, the amiibo just gives you a quicker way to unlock specific ones. |

I'm unlocking them, but I can't figure out how to control what they come out as. Is that only for amiibo owners? Or do I just have to tap the placed mushroom again?

No you should be able to even without any amiibo (i.e. if you've unlocked Shy Guy or the trampoline etc).
Not at my console right now but if I remember off the top of my head, you can place the Mystery Mushroom in the level (not in a block yet, just floating), then tap it once it's been placed and it will open up a screen of your available costumes, then you can drag it into a block etc. Maybe it isn't a tap, maybe you have to shake it. The exact method is slipping my mind atm |

For those interested in the game, Nintendo announced Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam for the 3DS will be compatible with 18 amiibo figurines. Mostly Mario and Yoshi based ones according to the chart.

I wish I wasn't going on vacation at the end of this month. Yoshi's Wooly World coming out October 16... bundle comes with green yarn Yoshi, and then light blue, pink, and mega Yoshi all releasing that day as well.
Might try and get the blue/pink ones because I know they'll be rarer, then grab green+game and the mega any time after, I can't imagine they will fly off shelves at their prices |

I nearly got some amiibos, and/or some Disney Infinity stuff, and it all looks great, but the aspect that you have to strive to get this plastic tat ultimately turns me off sadly. Running around like a flaming moron queueing up for a bit of rubbish, I can't bring myself to do it any more.
I also refuse to be stuck with the leftover amiibos that aren't worth scalping. |

Yeah it really harkens back to the beanie baby crap, there's just too much limited quantity that you really need to make a commitment to get some of it. Arguably not worth the hassle.
They seem to be getting more popular in general though. I mean, between amiibo, Disney Infinity, Skylanders, and hell even Lego Dimensions now... seems to be the flavour-of-the-month type toy for the foreseeable future |

Yarn Yoshis are a bit smaller than I was expecting but still the most adorable things I own. So happy with them.

You're better off doing that I think, the amiibo ones are really small
Except the Mega one but it's like $60 so totally not worth it |

Saw Mewtwo while in the UK, was gonna grab it but with the currency exchange rate it didn't make sense... don't think it'll be too rare to grab on the 13th

The first run ones are alright, but it seems like there's a big step up in style for the 2.0 ones. I'd say the super hero ones are a bit generic, the disney characters seem far more detailed, maybe because they're not as part of a playset they have to put more effort in to justify that character. The game are a mixed bag but I like the concept. Was able to pick up a bunch of different 1 and 2 sets for relatively low prices.

Gotta say, I'm wholly underwhelmed with getting all the Animal Crossing amiibo. Haven't bought any of them yet and going to take my time getting them. I don't believe any of them are particularly rare so I can wait on them.
Seeing that Gold Mario is getting restocked in Japan next month. Don't know if there's any plans to reprint it in North America, so this may be my only chance to get it at a somewhat reasonable price. Really can't wait for preorders in Canada to go up for Twilight Princess HD. That Wolf Link amiibo looks so good |

The Animal Crossing amiibo thing looks messed up. So you play a board game, but the players who have the amiibos get a bonus point per turn.
My friend just sent me a japanese 30th anniversary modern Mario so I now have an amiibo |

I didn't spend much time looking at the game because it looks just like Mario Party but with the Animal Crossing universe. The entire concept seemed so entirely boring to me.

The mini-games stuff unlocks at a lot slower pace than in the Mario Party series. Think it only really starts to unlock after the 2nd or 3rd game played at least for free play mode.
Didn't watch all of Giantbomb's play of the game but seems like the biggest thing unlocked after playing the first time is just the ability to pick which month in a year a game takes place in. |

The price is interesting. My understanding is that being third-party they can essentially set their own price, or at least I thought. Glad they're not marking it up

Might be able to determine price but know that supply-wise, third parties are mostly in charge of that.
The card amiibos and Yarn Yoshis being different prices probably means Nintendo has a range they'd allow company to charge for their own amiibo brand characters. |
