Red Dwarf X

In the last few months you might have heard rumours about a new series of Red Dwarf. If you're on the internet, frankly, you could hardly have missed them.

Well now the rumours are fact. Red Dwarf X is on its way.

Attending Dimension Jump XVI on Sunday, April 10th, Red Dwarf's co-creator, writer, director and executive producer Doug Naylor confirmed to fans that all the hope and possibility of recent times has come good: there will be more new Dwarf.

Thanking Steve North and Jane Rogerson from Dave - the channel behind 2009's Back to Earth as well as these new episodes - the statement came just moments before being released on the Dave website.

The facts are:

Quote:
The series will feature Rimmer, Lister, Cat and Kryten, once again played by Chris Barrie, Craig Charles, Danny John-Jules and Robert Llewellyn. (Y'know, unless anyone starts demanding a gold-plated dressing room or something.)
Quote:
Each episode will be approximately 30 minutes in duration. This is a big difference from the 23 minute episodes of Back to Earth. To compensate for this fuller length and commercial break, the new episodes will be shown in a 40 minute slot, much as current Dwarf repeats are on Dave.
Quote:
There will be six episodes in the series. The numbering of 'Series X' being both a pretty good promotional title for the channel, and technically correct since Back to Earth was a 'ninth series'.
Quote:
Shooting will take place this coming November, December and January, with broadcast slated for September 2012. That apparent delay is born of common sense - after its complex post-production, Red Dwarf X would be ready to broadcast in the summer, but that's a time of low audiences. An autumn launch will make the very most of Dave's new commission.
Taking questions from fans during a Q&A session, other - decidedly unconfirmed - possibilities came to light. Doug's focus is on a characterful series, coming back down to the 'intimate SF/sitcom' stylings of earlier series (though anyone who thinks Series III isn't pretty huge-looking needs to rewatch their DVD). There's always a possibility that Holly might return, but how and played by whom is up for grabs. And Talkie Toaster could always make a reappearance, too.

Hopes of new model effects - rather than CGI spaceships - were high, but dependant on budget. Similarly, Doug and the cast hope to shoot the series in front of a live studio audience... they just need to make it feasible, and convince the channel!

Brand new Red Dwarf. Can you believe it?!
Source.

Excellent news. I look forward to it.

If Holly is brought back, I can see them trying someone new. Someone, probably on TPWW, suggested Bill Bailey. I think he'd do quiet well as Holly so, if they get a new Holly, I'd hope for him.

That's what i was hoping for if we had to have adverts, the ads made the last episodes too short. I'm a big fan of the show so will give it a chance, i know other fans though who don't want it to come back.

It's promising that all Doug's hints at future storylines revolve around character exploration thus far. Whether he's thinking ahead towards a limited budget, or simply changed his mindset as to how he wants the show to go forward, a return to the smaller, character driven focus of the earlier series may signal a return to form.

The problem is, the 8 million viewers who regularly watched the show towards the end of its BBC run will expect the action sci-fi comedy of the later Red Dwarf years, and simply decry anything else as "not as good as it used to be" (much like Part 1 of Back to Earth two years ago). I'm not saying it was as good as the original series, but most people I know who didn't like it said it was "boring". They were expecting more along the lines of a 'Gunmen of the Apocalypse' than a 'Thanks For The Memory'. If the Dave budget is going to be a struggle, I'd be happy with more from the same well as the latter.

For me, Red Dwarf absolutely ended with ''Out of time'' (crew meet their future selves). I can't be arsed waffling on about the obvious wrongs of the episodes are that, but it was never the same. The best show on tv became cringe-worthy unfunny shite.

I didn't find it boring. I did, however, find it to be rather not funny. There were only a couple of jokes that really worked, and the rest were kind of ho-hum.

First and foremost, I expect Red Dwarf to be...Funny.

So, did anyone watch the new episode last night? Thoughts on it?

I thought it was fine for a first proper episode in almost 15 years. My only real "issue" which is so minor that it's not worth bringing up, really, was
SPOILER: show
the goofy face holograms pulled when they crashed. I could get it when Rimmer does it but when his brother does it and the simulant woman does it, it did seem a bit weird.

The next episode looks interesting from the "sneak peak" they gave but I think it's pretty obvious what's going to happen.
SPOILER: show
Killer AI takes over the ship, as seen in the episode 2 trailer. They seem doomed. Holly returns to save the day.

Norman Lovett said he'd never do anything with Red Dwarf again after being left out of BTE but I wouldn't be surprised if he did come back. Failing that, I'm sure Hatty would be happy to return.
If they had a whole new Holly, I think Bill Bailey would fit in well.

They have a list of the series X episodes on the official site and one of the titles seems a bit of a give away.

The episode is called "The Beginning" and, to me, the first thing that came to mind was
SPOILER: show
it'll be the last episode. The first episode of series I was called "The End" and now the last episode of series X is called "The Beginning". So, it makes sense that it would be the end of the show. X is also a neat number to wrap things up with.
