Would a G-1 Climax style event work in WWE?
I would love to see it, but I'd be worried that the mainstream audience wouldn't have the patience for it.

16 man round robin tournament consisting of two blocks, with the winners of each block facing off in the final.

You could do one on Smackdown and one on RAW...... would be a "Good way" to make all their meaningless random one on one matches "mean something" for however long it takes..... |

I think it'd have to be a Network special to really work. Having it playout on Raw and Smackdown would take away from the atmosphere of the tournament and feel just like a regular Raw or Smackdown. I'd be down for it although they couldn't even deliver on their own King if the Ring tournament last time they did it so I think the winner would just get a trophy and not much would come of it.

It would just put WWE's 50/50 booking under more of a microscope so probably not.

I'd be happy with the return of King of the Ring. Always my favorite gimmick PPV in the 90's.

Would probably give it a name like WWE Round Robin Challenge and throw it on Facebook Live.

Yes considering WWE already runs a ton of shows per month. All that would be different is fewer house shows and more WWE Climax type shows.
Quality-wise, probably be hit-or-miss due to WWE's booking habits. Even worse if Vince/Creative starts to do panic booking or keep changing plans as its going on. |

Booking aside, I thing the in ring ability of WWE's roster is the best it's ever been, and an event like this would showcase that.

Actually, I think something like this would add a lot to 205 Live and give it more of it's own identity.

If they were to do such an event, they'd probably have the tourney carry on through house shows and put those matches on the Network so they could get through it in a reasonable amount of time.

Just a quick draft of potential Raw and SmackDown blocks if the goal was to try to cobble together the best possible tournament from an in-ring standpoint without using someone who would have no chance of being in it based on not being "important" enough or whatever.
RAW Block Bobby Roode, Chad Gable, Elias, Finn Balor, Kevin Owens, Roman Reigns, Sami Zayn, Seth Rollins SmackDown Block AJ Styles, Cesaro, Daniel Bryan, Jeff Hardy, Rusev, Samoa Joe, Shelton Benjamin, Shinsuke Nakamura If they were to expand it to 10 men per show, they next guys in would I guess be Dolph Ziggler and Drew McIntyre for Raw, Sheamus and The Miz for SmackDown. Let's be real though.....they'd have Lashley and Braun in it on the Raw side just running roughshod through everyone, not to mention Jinder in it working total eyesores against everyone. SmackDown side would be harder to fuck up given the talent on that brand - although they'd probably get Big Cass in there. |

I think the main problem is everyone has already worked everyone 100 times and its 50/50 outside of Reigns and Strowman, there's no real wildcard potential because Rusev can randomly beat Bryan clean on a regular smackdown and it doesn't mean anything. You could have stuff like Gable tapping out Roman, but in reality you'd really have everyone going over Gable in good matches because "we're not pushing Chad Gable" while Jinder is points leader and Roman's biggest threat.

It'd be easy TV to fill out two months of shows, each champion being pinned sets up future challengers.
Won't happen. |

It could work, but doubt we will ever see it. Great idea for a Cruiserweight-only show or even the women

As much as people want to say that the fed couldnt pull it off i think the truth is a large american audience couldnt follow it. The attention spam is just so poor here it would struggle to get over even in the pefrect circumstances with the broader fanbase.
Would make for a great network special. Die hard fans would eat it up. |

Didn't TNA try and do a G1 style thing? Of course they managed to TNA the booking and instead of just having everyone wrestle everyone once they had some people working twice as many round robin matches to inflate their points and some people winning points by pinning people who weren't even in the tournament. Granted that's TNA and probably shouldn't count in any serious discussion.

Probably talking about the first Bound for Glory Series. Samoa Joe took out a 1/4 the field that didn't finish the tournament.
The closest thing they've done to a G1 event would probably be the World Title Series after Matt Hardy was forced to relinquish the belt. Was 32 contestants put into to 8 groups and even had women but only the first round was round robin. |

Trying to remember but was the World Title Series the one where TNA/Impact taped the matches out of order and prior to Hardy actually dropping the belt?
Like the final result of the tournament was known before the tapings were actually done and Hardy showed up with the belt for some of the matches because TNA/Impact didn't actually think ahead when they planned the tapings. |

It led to the last man standing match which had the double turn. One of the best matches they put on in that stretch of time in my opinion.
