First part of it looks like she just got done watching the Christopher Reeve Superman and decided to mimic his Clark Kent. She does seem to get better though. Not sure how true to the comics this looks but her boss is certainly cartoonish and lifted right from Devil Wears Prada. No idea how they're going to explain the absence of Superman from the series, and he apparently still uses the USPS to do his shipping.
Wasn't the Supergirl movie a colossal flop back in the day? Anyway, I haven't gotten into the other comic TV stuff like Arrow and The Flash and I doubt Ill get into this. |

So I take it we beat the over-stuff forums scare of 2006. lol
Yeah there's a little too much 'girl power' pandering that was really unnecessary and totally off Lifetime. It turns right around and makes female-led superhero projects look like try-hards. And the stupid Lifetime trailer music in the background really dragged it. If they're going to keep pushing the 'girls can be great, too' angle I promise it will turn both genders off. Saying that, the effects are certainly up to snuff (TV came a long way). I like most the casting. Something about Jimmy just didn't capture the vibe. Superman's pal is a geek, somebody who looks up even to clumsy nerd Clark, this Jimmy seems like he has it all together, not somebody Supes would find a connection with. I agree the boss lady might get annoying by episode 2, but I'm betting she'll be more interesting than a Spacely Sprocket cutout. Supergirl herself is great. Loved the stripperific gag. I don't think they need to explain why Superman's not around, since this isn't Metropolis and we're over half a decade in of a comic movie-verse where heroes go off on their own and forget each other's cell number. People will get over that. But alas with Superman seemingly established and never a mention of him in the CW-verse, probably best to accept Supergirl doesn't reside in that world either. Shucks. If this shows wants to ride the wave of the CW-verse, SHIELD, and Gotham; I suggest they tone down the cheesy girl power thing. Even Disney doesn't come off that sappy in their female centric shows. Make her capable as a superheroine, not as a female superhero. The second you make her gender a character point you ironically undermine her character. But it's a pilot, and SHIELD similarly started off rocky. Here's hoping the Back 13 starts kicking ass, but putting up against Gotham is looking like a huge mistake now. Has potential, I guess. I certainly like the fact that it seems that unlike Smallville, we will get to see her fly around and be out in the open etc...
I do find it weird that Superman isn't in it. Like that scene at the end with Jimmy giving Kara Superman's Cape/Baby Blanket. It's like.... What? Come on Supes, you can't even bother to visit your cousin to give her this treasured heirloom? Give her some words of inspiration, etc? Not like you would have to hop on an airplane/train/automobile to pay her a visit.... |

Inwent into this expecting to hate this (because i read this thread first) and i really liked it. Girl power is good here.
As far as the comments about it going head to head against gotham: things dont really work that way anymore, dvrs snd hulu have seen to that but even still gotham isnt exactly a powerhouse and these arent exactly going after the same audience (but theyre both comic shows!!!111!!! [and still no.]) |

I get the feeling that this is gonna be like Agents of SHIELD, where most of the first season sucks balls, but towards the end they start cutting out the stuff that nobody likes and it gets good later on. Once they ditch the rom-com elements and focus more on her doing superhero stuff, it's got potential.

That's a studio thing, I think-- for some reason, WB's decided that DC's TV and movie universes need to be separated, and Batman and Superman specifically aren't going to show up in-costume in any of their TV shows. |

Yeah, it's definitely weird and unfortunate-- on the plus side, it at least means that in the TV-verse there's a Superman who probably didn't let about a million people die and then kill a guy with his bare hands on his first day on the job.

But they have a (off camera) Batman who's considered a dangerous lunatic, so it balances?
As lame and hokey as it looks with the shoehorned "akward girl melodrama" schtick, it is already better than the Supergirl movie was. Low bar, I know. |

But saying that, I still haven't watched Arrow, Flash or Gotham. Is Flash any good, anyone? |

I know, but the way they put him in a no-win scenario like that was still a massive downer. I honestly liked Man of Steel a good bit, and I'm glad they didn't just replicate Marvel's formula, but I feel like they over-corrected on the "let's make Superman more serious" front.

Just watched the leaked pilot, and I actually kinda dig it.
Granted, it's very shmaltzy, so this really isn't gonna be your cup of tea if you're more into dark-and-gritty superhero stuff, but it's fun. And thankfully, the rom-com stuff is nowhere near as prevalent as the previews make it out to be. It's still there, but it's heavier on regular superhero stuff. Melissa Benoist is really good, and the rest of the cast is competent (except the guy who plays Winn-- he sucks). Pilots are always kinda hard to get a read on, since everyone's still trying to figure out what the hell their characters are going to be like, so I imagine it'll get better as it goes. Really, really hope they don't spend the rest of the series off-handedly mentioning "just like your cousin" or "you-know-who in Metropolis" or whatever-- that shit got old fast. And some of the green-screen shots are just painful, but there's only so much you can do when you're trying to do Superman-level special effects on a TV budget. Overall, it's not as good as the Flash, but if you like Flash, you'll probably enjoy Supergirl too. |

Nowhere Man how is it that you feel Gotham is terrible? It and the Flash the two best comic book shows going right now in my opinion.

I don't like Gotham for a number of reasons, mostly because it's completely unnecessary bloat to the Batman franchise that seriously undercuts Batman's importance to his own mythos-- the whole point of most of the Bat-villains is that they showed up to fill in the vacuum that Batman left when he got rid of all the regular crime. Joker shows up to be the 'better class of criminal' that would have to arise to counter Batman, Riddler shows up because he needs to prove that he's smarter than Batman, Catwoman shows up because she's inspired to dress up and get into trouble because of Batman, et cetera. They're all supposed to be a reaction to him, not the other way around.
Same with Jim Gordon-- he's always been the 'one good cop in a city gone wrong,' sure, but one of the major points has always been that he didn't believe he could make any difference until Batman shows up. In Gotham, he's practically Dirty Harry. Again, he's already heroic long before Batman shows up to inspire anyone, which makes Bruce even less important. Prequels in general are a terrible idea because they make the world smaller by asserting that connections between characters in the original work existed even before that (i.e. Darth Vader built C-3P0 and Yoda was war-buddies with Chewbacca, or kid proto-Joker was in the same circus that Dick Grayson's family is from), or otherwise make the original less important and thus less interesting. It's the same reason I hated Smallville, with all of Superman's villains and sidekicks running around and forming the Justice League before Clark even so much as thought about wearing a cape. And at least then, it took them several years to get to that point; Gotham has half of the Bat villains up and running in the first season. That, and a lot of the episode-to-episode plots are stupid and clumsy, and the portrayal of characters like Barbara is just horrendous. I generally like Fish Mooney (who I think should be put into the comics and made canon proper) and I don't mind creepy young Penguin, but the rest of it feels like I'm watching badly put-together fan fiction. |

I'll give you that they have totally screwed up Barbra, but the rest of the show is solid. None of the main villains from Batman have taken on the true villain roles yet.

Yeah, I just look at it as its own thing.... I don't care if they introduce villains/whatnot without Batman... Gotham is its own world with its own story.... Same with the people who got upset at Smallville introducing all these elements before Superman.... I don't care, it isn't trying to be an adaptation of Superman, it is its own thing...
But yeah, Barbara is the worst and I hope she doesn't come back.... |

Watched the pilot.... has potential, I guess.... hard to gauge it on this episode, especially since a lot of it was already in the trailers....
Really hope they stop constantly indirectly referencing Superman.... I hope when Hank Henshaw inevitably turns heel, they bring in Mister Bones.... |
