I had a great time watching the first film (Alien). I guess I should've curbed my expectations for the sequel with respect to the hype created by my friend and the Rotten Tomatoes score.

I remember dismissing "Sixteen Candles" due to the Asian character only to give it another shot and not hating the movie as much as I did previously.

Alien is horror masquerading as sci fi, Aliens is action masquerading as sci fi. I prefer Alien because the alien is terrifying but the motivations of Ian Holm's Ash bring a waking nightmare into reality.
I think the continuity is pretty much gone at this point though and I'm far more keen on a reboot after an extended hiatus than any further sci-fi dream teams or Ridley Scott involvement.

I had a better understanding of what they were trying to achieve (at my age). It was beautiful and I am a bit ashamed. I will hand over the remains of my man card.

Betty Blue is another shite French film about an overrated daft bird.

The best French films are all related to crime or wannabe gangsters. People to pity.
These include La Haine, 13 Tzameti and the greatest of all L'Homme Du Train.
The only other great french films have Emmanuelle Béart in them back when she was otherworldly hot. It's a shame what time and bad decisions have done to her once beyond-beautiful face.

I don't get you at all Dave.

Brother Where Art Thou, Lethal Weapon, Aliens all rate at 6/10 which is somehow as enjoyable as a film with The Rock running around a jungle.

I was actually thinking about it. For me, "6/10" represents that the movie wasn't bad or even average. It was definitely good but not amazing...if that makes any sense.

Let me try to redo them

Aliens - 6/10 (An intriguing action film that I did not enjoy as much as the original)

Lethal Weapon - 4/10 (My expectations were quite low. I guess I conditioned myself to enjoy it in a bubble)

O Brother, Where Art Thou? - 5/10 (Typical Coen Brothers production. I would've enjoyed it a lot more if I wasn't already sick of Vishal Bharadwaj whose films have similar character presentation and plot progression)

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle - 5/10 (I was not expecting this film to be so enjoyable. I don't get Kevin Hart but I am a huge mark for Jack Black. Have been since I was a kid.)

Moviepass #35 Hostiles 4/10 - Haven't been more disappointed by any of the movies I've seen so far than this. Didn't think Christian Bale was that great and aside from a hot opening 5 minutes and the final 5 minutes there was about 100 minutes of nothing happening besides watching them ride their horses from New Mexico to Montana..

I don't think the release dates have much to do with it, these films all stand up very well aesthetically. Arguably Lethal Weapon looks dated in an obvious way and that's mostly due to the film being set within living memory where the mullet was in style and women wore absurdly formless, high waisted jeans.

I'm always surprised when I find someone who's sensibilities are so different to mine when it comes to films.
I tend to reserve ratings of 5 and under for films that annoy or anger me in some way. A rating of 5 or lower is just a varying degree of shit to me, so I find it hard to reconcile Dave's seemingly innocuous and inoffensive comments with his oddly low scores. Especially the Lethal Weapon one. If I find a film to be 4/10 I slag it right off before I mention anything it did right.

Blade Runner 2049. Fiftyleven/10. I loved it. Really hope they continue the story even though it bombed at the box office.

That’s because it was shot on 35mm film via Panavision Millennium XL2 and similar cameras.

People don’t realize how better films look when they’re shot on film. I’m glad certain franchises like Star Wars, Star Trek, DC etc. are committed to the medium. Not to mention Nolan and Tarantino who have special screenings for film projection.

I meant more towards how some of the shots were done. There was a shot of the guy outside at a payphone and the pan and zoom in was straight out of a 70s movie

Gods and Generals: 0/4 Stars

I watched the world's worst retelling of the American Civil War last night and by the looks of it there was a bit of cash behind it too. Robert Duvall and Stephen Lang should be thoroughly ashamed of this time in their lives...when a paycheck meant more to them than the abominable material with which they were working.
Politically speaking this film was fucking mental. Every black character in it (I think there were three) gets trotted out in some gross display of friendship and assistance to the noble confederate cause and in one particularly egregious instance they have Frankie Faison add an "s" to the end of his words to show how provincially charming(ignorant) and contented(grateful under white authority) he is. I think the message is supposed to be that if you are in the south long enough a kindly black slave will come and recite passages from the bible to you in thanks for the rewards the South has provided him.
It's all pretty gross.
Aside from the so-obvious-it's-just-fucking-nuts history rewrites we also get long periods of running. I mean lots of it. Running or marching on great big fields for extended periods of time. sure there's smoke and the odd crack and flash of suspiciously shoddy CGI gunfire but it's mostly just long shots of people marching followed by slightly closer shots of people marching. Then perhaps a bit of running and finally lots of lying down or standing up as two opposing armies stand 50 yards apart and blast hell out of each other for however long it takes until the quota of melodramatic camp has been squawked away by their badly written minor characters.
There's a fucking amazing bit where the union Irish and the confederate Irish just cry at each other as they get blasted to bits.

"They've been misled to their fates" says one of them.

I nearly pissed myself.

Other highlights include Jeff Daniels clearly being swayed into this awful tripe with the promise of a heroic supporting role and his constant running forward, light aluminium cavalry sabre in hand as he intermittently screams "double time lads!" and slows down to scream it some more with his back to the war.
Stephen Lang plays the infamous Stonewall Jackson with all the aplomb of a constipation turd hitting the toilet bowl, I'm not sure why he's even in it at all. He just runs about saying religious things and being the recipient of a humble slave's benevolence.
He also gets shot in the hand first thing in the war like a complete dickhead for waving his arms around to signal kick off.

It's not a football match Stonewall.

I have decided to use Roger Ebert's 4 star rating's system from now on. I think it's easier to show approval/disapproval this way. I was too sparing in my below 5/10 reviews.

Carlito's Way: 1/4 Stars

This was really bad. It was like Scarface but with an even dafter accent, Sean Penn with a novelty Jew-fro and John Leguizamo as the wettest baddie in a film since Taylor Negron's intentionally ludicrous turn in The Last Boy Scout. How come people rated Brian De Palma anyway? From what I have seen it's all camp gangster flicks about hispanic people using horrendous colour schemes in the backdrop.
The Untouchables was alright though.

Moviepass #37 Winchester 6/10 not really scary..and
SPOILER: show
They don't actually mention it in the movie (it gets mentioned in text at the end) But since the Dr. Examination of Sarah Winchester took place between 4/13 and 4/19 1906 you can infer that everything that happens at the end is the result of the 1906 SF Earthquake on 4/18...which I figured out earlier in the movie when the date was given since I remember the date from going to SF a couple years ago.

Also
SPOILER: show
It rips off the 6th Sense sort of. The doctor can see the ghosts of the dead people because he was dead forv3 minutes due to getting shot with a Winchester ruffle himself-
