Every team needs to get better in the AL East, Jays don't really need a starter, but they do need some insurance in the bullpen and a fringe starter turned into a longman to replace Floyd to eat innings should a starter happen to tank a game.... Jays could use Goins/Barney/Travis as bait for something big as they have lots of depth at 2B.

Question - Zach Britton is 29/29 saves with a less than .70 ERA. In 1992 Dennis Eckersley had 51 saves with a 1.91 ERA and he won the AL Cy Young and MVP. In 2003 Eric Gagne was 55/55 saves with a 1.20 ERA when he won the NL Cy Young.
No chance Britton wins the MVP but I think he has a shot for a the Cy Young

It's funny because he's not having a better year than any of them. He is perhaps in the conversation, but only because he's on a contending team and because he has an "oooohhh shiny" win-loss record.. But he's not significantly better, if at all, than any of them.

What's funnier is you think he is having a better year based on him being on your favorite team, but think a guy who was a terrible starter now turned one inning reliever is Cy Young worthy.

In a minimum of 70 innings pitched, Tillman is not top 20 in pitcher WAR, according to Fangraphs. He's not in the top 20 in k9. Barely top 20 in ERA by 2/10 of a run
Well out of the top 20 in fielding independent pitching (i.e., he's been lucky/blessed with a good defense). Not top 20 in k%. He's actually 50th in bb%.

So exactly what is Tillman good at that would make you think he's actually Cy Young worthy? Besides wins and losses and the fact that he's happens to play in Baltimore?

Did you bother to read how that thing as developed? It's based on how they think the balloting is going to go based on previous voter tendencies. It's not a measure of who should be Cy Young award worthy, but rather, who might be based on how voters typically vote.

It's not the same as saying player a deserves it more than player b based on actual performance.

Which isn't the argument. The argument is whether or not he's good enough and why/why not. Not why he might win based on writer bias and trend

Sabermetrics aren't everything. They're definitely useful in painting the entire picture and give you a little bit extra, but certainly not the be all end all. I do like WAR though, that's a pretty sweet stat that gives us a lot more than we used to get.

Hope Happ is going to be okay after getting smashed in the left forearm with a liner from Smolinski. He was dealing before that, even got to 2 outs in the 6th, Gibby took him out and Chavez came in and gave up both inherited runners. Fucking drives me nuts sometimes. Chavez is a good pitcher too with nice stuff, probably other than Osuna and Grilli, the most consistant arm this year. You literally have one out you need to get and you give up a game tying double to a pinch hitter hitting .250.

Hopefully they pick up a decent bullpen arm.

Going to watch the Jayce play Seattle on Saturday, probably be a good game.

The only sabermetric stats I used was WAR and FIP. Everything else are common stats. Like strikeout rates, walk rates, and earned run average. Even on a basic level there isn't a strong argument for Tillman, except his team record and pitcher WINZZ.

FIP almost seems a tool to discredit guys. WAR is cool as shit BUT I think looking at someone's line offensive and defensively you can kind of just make up your own mind. If someone has 140 RBI I can safely assume he either socks a lot of dingers, mostly with runners on base, or he's really good at hitting with runners in scoring position. I don't think the RBI is that misleading. Someone has to be able to knock runs in, and hitting with runners in scoring position is invaluable.

Twins fire GM Terry Ryan............again. It was his second go-around at the position. Was the GM from '94-2007.

And for bit of a funny/sad story. Indians tried to do everything to turn Yan Gomes' season around. Even taking a page out of the "Major League" book and sacrificing a fried chicken. Well, all that didn't work and he's on the DL for a separated shoulder.

The Mets cannot fucking buy a hit with runners on base. It's incredibly difficult to watch. Asdrubal Cabrera is 0 for his last 28 with RISP. He and Granderson are both hitting over 100 points below their career averages with runners on. It's fucking baffling.

Kevin Long has turned this Met lineup into a team of hackers. They either swing for the fences, try to work out a walk, or strike out/weakly pop out/GIDP trying to do one of those things. Any non-HR hit is by accident.

I don't even know if I can blame Long. It seems he's being directed to coach the team this way. It's Moneyball 101 - batting average is viewed as irrelevant, they never bunt runners over, they never ever steal (David Wright has 3 stolen bases and is still the team leader), and defense is viewed as largely unimportant.

And of course ironically the one guy who was so bad defensively that even Sandy Alderson didn't want him ended up turning into the best hitter in baseball. Fucking hell what a nightmare.

lol yeah. Murph was showboating after routine double plays in the last series in Queens...and it was so bad I reached the point where I wanted someone to plunk him just because pitching to him regularly wasn't working.

But then they did that Stand Up to Cancer thing and he wrote "Sandy Alderson" on his placard and it made me remember I can't totally hate him

Doesn't he also have some sort of serious medical condition which meant his career was going to get affected a lot sooner than normal?

Think his pitching style was meant to help overcome that issue but at the same time also means he'd have less quality time in his career as a trade-off.
