If we can keep most of our players not called Douglas, de Vries, Hammill or Sylla and make noticable improvement on almost getting relegated, and possibly a playoff spot, I'll be happy.

OK, so I spent a few hours on Wikipedia the other day learning about all of the different tournaments and leagues and stuff. One thing I read about was a game between the UEFA and Champions League winners at the beginning of the season. Is there any significance to this game? Where is it played? Give me all of the history, now.

Here's some news on the EPL coverage on FSC this season (for those that get the FSC):

Fox Soccer Channel Makes Changes to EPL Coverage

If you've been reading the EPL Talk Blog the past week, you'll notice that we've been talking a lot about Fox Soccer Channel's impending coverage of the 2006/2007 Premiership season.

We can now confirm that FSC has changed their schedule regarding coverage of matches. Their typical schedule will now be:

Saturdays
10am ET -- Live Premiership match
12:15pm ET -- Live Premiership match
3pm ET -- Tape delayed Premiership match

Sundays
11am ET -- Live Premiership match

Mondays
3pm ET -- Live Premiership match

The 10am ET match on Saturday mornings used to pay-per-view, so that's a huge bonus to be able to watch that match and have it followed by the one at Noon -- for four hours of live Premiership coverage.

Most of us know that the majority of Premiership matches are played at 10am on Saturday, so it'll be interesting to see if FSC shows the results of the matches near the end of the 10am broadcast (except, hopefully, for the 3pm tape-delayed match -- so the pleasure of watching the 3pm isn't ruined).

The other benefit is being able to see the Sunday match live at 11am ET rather than the tape delayed time of 1pm ET. Bravo to FSC!

Remember where you read it first! More details to come about the 7:45am Saturday matches, the 8:30am Sunday matches and the midweek games.

According to the Fox Soccer Channel web site, we can reveal that the channel is planning on showing the Community Shield match on Sunday, August 13th at 10am ET.

The match, which is played between the Premiership champion and FA Cup winner, will be shown live. In previous years, it has been shown on pay-per-view only. This year, it'll be the clash between Chelsea and Liverpool.

I can't remember but I think it's called the Champions Cup, or somesuch. It's normally played in Tokyo towards the end of August, but nobody really takes it that seriously...Spanish and Italian leagues generally haven't even started by the time it takes place, so they tend to treat it as a warmup game.

Yeah what The Mask said. It's the European Super Cup which always happens maybe in the 1st or 2nd week of the Premiership season and always takes place in Monaco.

Really doesn't have much significance at all but it's just another trophy clubs can say they have won.

Klinsmann steps down, Loew steps in

BERLIN, July 12 (Reuters) - Juergen Klinsmann, who led Germany to a surprise third-place finish in the World Cup, said on Wednesday he was stepping down and that assistant Joachim Loew would take his place.

'This was not an easy decision,' Klinsmann, fighting back tears, told a news conference in Frankfurt.

'I would like to thank everybody for two exciting, two wonderful years,' the 41-year-old said.

Klinsmann, who came under fierce criticism prior to the World Cup over his commitment and tactics, silenced the doubters by steering Germany to the semi-finals, where they lost to eventual world champions Italy in extra time.

He said he was leaving because he wanted to spend time with his family, who live in southern California, and planned to take a six-month break before thinking about his next move.

'I feel burned out,' Klinsmann said.

Loew, a former midfielder and Bundesliga coach who worked closely with Klinsmann in taking Germany further in the World Cup than many had expected, has agreed on a two-year contract to run the team.

The 46-year-old pledged to continue with the philosophy that he and Klinsmann put in place over the past two years.

'That's the only way we can achieve a lasting place among the very best in the world,' Loew said.

All 23 players in Germany's squad, 93 percent of the public, according to opinion polls, and even some of Klinsmann's harshest critics had said they wanted him to continue.

Germany have a friendly against Sweden on Aug. 16 before their 2008 European Championship qualifying campaign starts in September.

I guess this paves the way for him to take the US job. We'll see if he takes it though.

Also, just read that Lippi has stepped down as the Italian National Team coach too.

To be fair, I was telling you how bad Douglas was long before you signed him.

Aside from Stephen Hughes, did you sign anyone from Scotland that was any good?

Yep, the FFA were satisfied with Houllier as manager but because he had an ethnic-sounding surname and spoke with a slight accent they didn't accept him. Guus got away with it though because they were happy to just call him "Gus Hi-dink" and smoke all the choof that he bought with him from the Netherlands.

By the way fellas, just as I predicted about 1-2 weeks ago in the 2005/06 football thread:

FIFA lifts suspension on Hellenic Football Federation
Zurich, 12 July 2006 - The FIFA Emergency Committee decided today (12 July 2006) to lift the suspension on the Hellenic Football Federation (HFF) after receiving confirmation that the Greek Parliament had approved an amendment to the national legislation relating to sport in order to bring it into line with the requirements of the FIFA Statutes and the relevant UEFA regulations.

The Emergency Committee had suspended the HFF on 3 July 2006 after adjudging that the situation of the Greek federation did not comply with the principles of the FIFA Statutes regarding the independence of football associations and their decision-making procedures. Discussions were subsequently held between FIFA and the HFF, as well as between the latter and Greek government authorities.

As a consequence, the Greek Parliament voted on the night of 11-12 July to introduce the following amendment to national legislation regarding sport:

"Specifically, for the sport of football, all the subjects of functioning and organisation of the sport, the Hellenic Football Federation and its members are self-governed by the HFF and its bodies, according to its statutes and regulations, as well as those that are determined by the Union des Associations Européennes de Football (UEFA) and the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), even if different regulations are provided in the law 2725/1999, as it is in effect in the athletic legislation. Subjects of audit for the subsidies that the HFF receives from the state, control of legality, public order and safety are subject to the exclusive competence of the state."

In view of this amendment, the FIFA Emergency Committee deemed that the HFF is now in a position to respect the statutes and regulations of FIFA as well as those of UEFA. As a result, the suspension previously imposed on the Hellenic Football Federation has been lifted as of today.

Clear from the start FIFA were just doing it to scare the Greek government.

Division 1 (or Coca Cola Championship or whatever it's called) has the top 2 teams at the end of the season get promoted, then 3rd-6th place battle it out in play-off games for the right for the 3rd and final promotion spot into the Premiership.

Assuming you mean from Scottish clubs, not nationals, Patrick Kisnorbo. A shit midfielder under Levein, one of the worst players to wear the shirt, but has been quality since Rob Kelly put him in defence.

And thanks for validating my belief that Hughes is a good player. I think he's great, but the City fans really turned on him for no justified reason.

But despite the confidence-boosting win, Kelly was dealt a blow in the news that James Wesolowski, who has just returned from a broken leg, has picked up a thigh injury.

For fucks SAKE, STAY HEALTHY.

Roberto Donadoni is the new Italy coach.

I'm not as pissed off about having to play them in the Euro qualifiers now.

No deal. Perhaps if you hadn't been silly enough to release your best player, Darren Anderton, we could've done a deal.

Wesolowski is only out for 2 weeks, so assuming he doesn't get injured in another friendly, he's still available for the Luton match.
