Who do you think are the 10 Most Important Japanese Wrestlers

Basically, list who you consider to be the 10 Most Important Japanese Wrestlers, in your own opinion.

Me, in no particular order, outside of #1.

1. Rikidozan
2. Antonio Inoki
3. Giant Baba
4. Tenryu
5. Great Muta
6. Minoru Suzuki
7. Tiger Mask
8. Jushin "Thunder" Liger
9. Bull Nakano
10. Shinsuke Nakamura

I can't wait for some of these responses. Especially one in particular.

How Atushi Onita isn't on anyone's list is baffling.

FMW drew 55,000 with no television! This shit Onita pulled off is legendary. He's top 5.

I'd honestly never heard of him but a guick google brought this up and I must say wow, so thanks for mentioning him. Going to see if I can find a full match next but this was amazing.

People would be shocked to hear how well promotions like WAR, FMW, SWS, UWFI drew with no television to promote. Just mags and word of mouth. Like I'm talking 10-55 thousand for a big show. And I haven't even touched on the Joshi phenomenon

Could make an arguement for Akira Maeda, since he spearheaded the uwf invasion of new japan in the 80's. Drew huge numbers, and was the inspiration for the nwo.

I was thinking of doing a similar thread for Gaijins, as well. And I still might.

Also, huge ups for mentioning folks like Onita, Mr. Saito, Fujinami, and Chosu. The ONLY reason why I didn't mention Fujinami in my list was to include Nakano.

I'm also mildly surprised no one has included Masahiro Chono, Kensuke Sasaki, or Yuji Nagata. A case could also be made for Super Delphin, Ebessan/Kikutaro, or Danshoku Dino on the comedy front.

Alright fuckers. Hold onto your butts. DVLH was a poser. I'm the real god damn authority around here.

Also, gonna be typos cause the keyboard on my tablet is dildos.

10. Hiroshi Tanahashi
I thought long and hard about this spot. And while lots of old school names like Choshu, Fujinami, Tsuruta, and Tenryu, came across my mind, the more I thought about it, the more I realized that none of those guys defined their era as much or as long as Tanahashi has. Whether you're a fan or not, you can't deny the impact he has had on the industry. His popularity is one of the reasons njpw has been able to resurrect itself from disaster. And even if you can't get behind his look or character, you can't deny he's been a part of a plethora of amazing matches over the years.

9.Tiger Mask
The godfather of junior heavyweight wrestling. While dynamite kid, kuniaki kobayashi, and tatsumi fujinami certainly contributed to the boom in popularity of the division in the 80's, it was tiger mask that was the driving force. Like ultimo, he was so smooth in everything he did. He and his peers put junior heavyweight wrestling on the map.

8. Rikidozan
I know, I know, he brought wrestling to japan, how is he not #1? Well truth is, he wasn't in tne business that long. At least not compared to others on the list. And while he did bring wrestling to japan, I believe it would have found its way over anyhow. But that doesn't take away the fact that he did, nor does it take away from his nwa title reigns. So while I feel there are others who have contributed more over time, he still makes the list based on the importance of his contributions.

7. Chigusa Nagayo/Lioness Asuka
Cheating a bit here, but these two were equally influential in their time, plus the height of their success was tagging together.

I love that women in wwe are being treated more seriously, and are putting on great matches. But objectively speaking, every "womens revolution" match, (yes even the anazing ones in nxt) are all average at best compared to 80s and 90s All Japan Womens matches, and Chigusa and Asuka, known together as the crush gals were its biggest stars. Female wrestling in japan, or "joshi" has always had this thing where their faces are also pop idols, despite not being all that great to look at. And not being great singers. I dunno. But the crush gals were the biggest sensation the company ever produced. Which isnt to say thats all they had going for them. Chigusa and Asuka were phenomenal talents. Great at playing the underdog while still looking threatening when they needed to. And holy shit the matches. They were putting on matches in the 80's that were decades ahead of their time. Matches that you could put up against anything today, regardless of gender.

At the height of their success, the crush gals were as big in japan as hulkamania was in america. Possibly bigger. They laid the groundwork for future stars like Bull Nakano, Manami Toyota, and Aja Kong. You wonder why there is such a skill gap between NXT's Asuka and the rest of the women in wwe. It's because japan has a decades long pedigree of exellence when it comes to women's wrestling, and the crush gals are the first example I'd point to.

6. Atsushi Onita
Gertner is right. This guy deserves a lot of credit. While there had been hardcore matches before, Onita pioneered the deathmatch and made it a national sensation, at least within the tape trader community. There is no ECW without Onita and FMW. The hell this guy put himself through to get his promotion over and compete with the big dogs, makes every other hardcore wrestler look like a fucking sissy.

On a side note, I might be a bit biased, as Onita and FMW is what got me into japanese wrestling after playing as the "DOA" wrestlers in WCW/NWO Revenge. Bought a tape of Onita vs Hayabusa in an electrified, exploding steel cage match, and I've been hooked ever since.

5. Jushin Liger
Tiger mask, dynamite kid, kuniaki kobayashi, and tatsumi fujinami may have put junior heavyweight wrestling on the map, but Liger made it a pillar of japanese wrestling. Many of the tournaments which got the division national attention, such as the J-cup and J-crown were his creations. Such a great talent in the the ring. Old as he is, and he's still going strong as ever, including that great match with tyler breeze. Oh, and all the great shooting star presses we've seen over the years? Can send Liger a thank you, because he invented it.

4. Giant Baba
As a wrestler, Baba was pretty awful to watch. On a good day, with the right person, he could have a really entertaining match, however. His bouts with The Destroyer Dick Beyer (who would be top 5 if I was including foreigners) in the 70s were fantastic.

As a promoter, Baba has been universally praised. I don't believe I've ever heard or read anyone saying anything bad about him as a boss. He pushed the right people at the right time, and also did a phenomenal job with foreign talent. He did have a lot of strict rules about how he ran the promotion, which while admirable, also limited him in certain ways, and thats one reason why he didnt get the #3 spot.

3. Antonio Inoki
Really tough choice between inoki and baba for the third spot, but at the end of the day, I have to give it to Inoki. He was a lot more creative and daring as a promoter. Even if some of his ideas didn't pan out in terms of quality, they still garnered a lot of attention and profits. His matches are definitely easier to watch, though you still have to be a fan of old school, slower paced wrestling to appreciate them. Regardless, he is a pioneer.

2.Keiji Mutoh/Great Muta
I'm not sure anyone in history has successfully adapted to his enviornment and changes in the industry as long as Mutoh has. Whether it's completely changing his style and inventing one of the most popular moves of all time, to account for his knees degrading, or founding new promotions with great new talent, he has never been in danger of becoming irrelevant. And that's without even going into his classic matches. His match with Chono at the 91' g1 climax. The creation of the "muta scale" in his match vs hase. And of course his matches with sting.

Which brings me to the great muta. Muta is why I hate Demon Finn Balor. Mutoh puts so much work into Great Muta, that you would be excused for thinking they're two different wrestlers. Meanwhile, once the bell rings finn can't be bothered to change a single thing.

Muta also got over in the states in a time where doing so was much more difficult for non english speaking stars. Because before Nakamura, mutoh was the previous japanese charisma machine.

1. Misiwa
You could argue that other wrestlers were more influential to wrestling in Japan, but Misiwa and his peers in all japan in the 90's influenced the entire industry for decades to come. AJPW and NOAH's "Kings Road Style" of high impact, fast paced, multiple finisher wrestling matches, was created by misiwa along with kawada, kobashi, taue, and akiyama. It got picked up by american indies starting with ROH, and grew out from there, to the point where WWE and NXT now use a safer version of it today. Whether your a fan of today's style or not, misiwa and 90's ajpw's influence on the evolution of the business is undeniable.

In addition, I believe that out of every japanese wrestler, Misiwa's body of work is the best in terms of match quality. Just wall to wall ckassics. From his early stuff as Tiger Mask II, to his later work in Noah. Obviously, thats subjective, considering the drastic differences in styles promotion to promotion, especially in the 90's. But if you are a fan of kings road style, I don't see how you can even debate it.

Seems like Muta would be at the top of the list, without him, not much of North America would have searched out the others IMO

I never thought a no contest could be anything more than a disappointing ending, until I saw Chigusa vs Devil Masami in 85'. After exhausting everything in their arsenals, they just started punching and kicking one another until neither one could stand. They built to it wonderfully, and executed it in a way that felt truly epic.

I know it's difficult, but it makes for great discussions. And many interesting points are brought up.
