A battle between two of my favorites:

Some background story: Doug Basham is a second generation Superstar, the nephew of head OVW trainer, Danny Davis. Paul London was an independent stand-out, winning the ECWA Super 8 tournament to get the attention of WWE talent scounts. London was signed and was assigned to OVW, where Danny Davis said that he had nothing to teach this young prodigy. Basham, upon hearing this news, challenged Paul London to this match on Velocity!

Analysis:

* Doug Basham and Paul London lock-up. Both have understated amateur backgrounds. Basham, with the size and power advantage, backs London into the corner. Basham gets a headlock and London shoots him off the ropes, but a hard tackle sends London crashing to the mat.

* London stares up at the larger veteran, and realizes that there is no way he can win this match based on his strength. Basham is getting confident that he has London not only over-powered, but outclassed. Basham holds the ropes open for London, and informs him that OVW still has his slot open.

* London has got way too much heart to quick, and dropkicks Basham, sending him crashing into the apron and to the floor! That's what arrogance gets you. Basham appears to have hurt his face. This provides a cloak for London to attempt a pescado to the outside. Basham has this scouted, and cowers down to avoid the crossbody variation. London was prepared for this, however, embarrassing the previously overconfident Basham, who surges onto the apron, but gets slung back into the ring by London, getting some confidence in his power back, and utilizing that knowledge of the ring Davis was so impressed by.

* London goes for an Oklahoma roll. There are those mat skills that many pundits overlook. He has proven himself capable against Doug Basham, but he does not want to press his luck. It only gets a two count. Not underestimating his opponent, London goes for a school boy next, but Basham gets his shoulders almost instantly off the mat. Staying on Basham, London tosses the possibly injured face into the turnbuckle, sending Referee Jimmy Korderas scattering out of the way. A forearm to that face is followed up by an attempt at some mounted punching, but Basham, realizing the situation he is in, desperately powers London out and into an inverted atomic drop. Basham follows this up by mercilessly launching London through the top and middle turnbuckles, sending his left shoulder into the ring post, as the former Machine takes a chance to regain his composure.

* Basham cannot believe the offense he just sustained from the fiery young man from Austin, Texas. He checks to see if blood has been drawn, and queries the referee as to whether or not this can be legal. Surely he must have cheated? Frustrated, Basham pulls London out from the turnbuckles and makes a pin attempt. He must be done. 1-2-no, London kicks out. Basham is perhaps still underestimating his enemy? Basham cannot believe what he perceives as the audacity of his opponent. He begins to stomp the left arm and shoulder of London. He tosses London over into a seated position by it, and traps it as he drives his knees into it, crashing it into the mat. He points at London and tells him that he had a chance to take a walk back to Louisville, but London fires back with some forearm shots, and even catches Basham in that face! Basham responds with a boot the shoulder, followed by a leg drop to the region. It should be pointed out that Doug Basham is a specialist when it comes to using his feet -- he is the innovation of The Last Impression; a leaping leg lariat varation that catches his opponent, and drives their head and neck into the mat.

* Basham kicks Paul London in the spine, deviating from his strategy of going after the arm for a second. He is showing his frustration. He applies a modified wristlock, designed to go after the arm on London, who is in perfect position to fire a forearm into the face of Basham, who wrenches the hold on tighter in response. A second forearm forces Basham to pull the hair of London, slamming his head on the mat. Basham converts his hold into a figure four armlock. Basham stares at the referee, expecting a submission.

* London begins to fight out, so Basham drives a knee into the shoulder and goes for a pin. He is expecting London to stay down too easily. London tries to fight back with some wild strikes, but Basham again goes to the same wristlock maneuver, which London again counters with forearms, and Basham again counters by pulling London's hair to take him to the mat. If at first you don't succeed. Referee Korderas saw the hair pull at this point, and compels Basham to release the hold! Justice for Paul!

* Basham is perturbed by this call, and turns his attention back to London in time to receive a knife-edge chop, which stings Basham, and takes his mind out of the game. It doesn't buy London enough time, however, and Basham kicks London in the head, knocking him loopy and defenseless long enough to get him into position for some short-arm tackles, targeting the left shoulder. The tackle, if you remember, was the first move Basham used to send London to the mat earlier in the match. London again tries to forearm out of Basham's attempt to control his arm, but another tackle threatens to dislocate the shoulder. A third attempt at the move is scouted by London, however, who uses the short-arm pull to add extra impact to his forearm, knocking Basham to a knee!

* London fires off the ropes, and Basham, dazed, anticipates another forearm, but ducks, however London, the speedier and more acrobatic of the two, changes his plans and attempts a sunset flip. Basham manages to axe-handle the left shoulder of London with all his downward force to reset London's momentum.

* Basham now has London where he wants him, and with assured control, hits a hammerlock back suplex on London! Basham is showing absolutely no regard for the safety of Paul London! To make matters worse, Basham isn't even going for the pin or a submission win here! Basham goes to the second rope. He's looking for another hammering blow to the shoulder of London -- who gets the foot up right in the injured face of Basham! He might be fighting a nap after that one. On closer inspection, it looks like the boot may have also done damage to Basham's left shoulder -- the same shoulder he has been maliciously targeting on his smaller opponent!

* Referee Korderas starts his count, as both men are down -- Basham trying to regain composure after taking some heavy shots to the face; London desperately trying to climb up using one arm. Both men make it up, and Basham charges in to try and regain his advantage, but he gets a kick to the face! London follows that up with a kick to the gut of Basham, bending him over, positioning him for a kick to the face! London follows this up with a picture-perfect spinning heel kick! He's fighting with one arm! Somehow London manages to throw his entire body weight into a dropsault, connecting with Basham's chin. London makes a cover, but Basham kicks out at two. He's relentless.

* London tries to apply a front facelock on Basham, but his left side is too exposed, and Basham is able to knee his way out and wring the arm down, sending London crashing into the mat. Basham has control again, and looks like he is ready to call this a night -- although he may not be able to brag to his uncle after the fight Paul London has given him tonight. He goes for that dislocating shoulder tackle one more time, but London lowers himself and counters into a back body drop! Somehow London manages to block out the pain long enough to hit a springboard moonsault off he second turnbuckle, wiping out Basham! London knew Doug would be coming for him, the OVW stalwart's aggressive nature again working against him! 1-2-Basham manages to slide out, given that London could not get a full cover on Basham because of the state of his shoulder. Can London even win this match? Why is he still fighting? My god, what a heart in this young man.

* London scores with an enziguri to Basham, dazing him and knocking him into the ropes! He stumbles back and London manages to school boy him with his good arm! 1-2-no! Basham somehow escapes that clever and resilient approach by London to get Basham's shoulders pressed to the mat by his own weight. The folks are home are surely starting to see what Doug Basham's own uncle sees in Paul London.

* London attempts to whip Basham off the ropes, but he has no control, and Basham easily counters into a hammerlock, and he muscles London up, jarring that injured shoulder on the top rope with an illegal hot-shot maneuver. Dammit. London stumbles into the middle of the ring, refusing to go down by such chicanery as Referee Korderas admonishes Basham, but that unfortunately leaves him vulnerable to The Last Impression -- that leaping leg lariat -- driving the head and shoulder of London into the mat. 1-2-3. Doug Basham has defeated Paul London, and I'm sure he'll go bragging to his brother and his buddies about how proved that Paul London isn't the prodigy all the "experts" claim him to be, but Paul London gave him a hell of a fight here, and it looked like he had the Machine at several moments during the course of this match -- even with one arm. I think Paul London is everything he has been touted to be, and will only get better. Doug Basham better think twice before he asks for another match with Paul London down the line.
