Shakeups and Dual Branded PPVs

I don't understand the point of both. Without brand exclusive PPVs there is not enough PPV time to develop new feuds to put on PPV.

It can't be a coincidence that both Raw and Smackdown ratings are already way down, and it's only been 2 weeks since the Shakeup.

Without brand exclusive PPVs there is no reason to have separate rosters and separate championships.

This is the same exact thing they did last time. Make separate rosters with their own titles, then get rid of brand exclusive PPVS, next they will be doing Raw Supershows where everybody is on Raw, then they will Unify titles, then it will get really stale, then they will come up with the great idea of a brand split...

It got to the point that before this last brand split, there was no reason to even watch Smackdown. It was just Raw recap and Midcard stories that don't matter since they don't get on PPV anyways, ala a longer version of Superstars.

How long until Vince decides (again) that if everybody is on all the PPVs then everybody should be on Raw? This is especially comical then when they still keep doing the Survivor Series, Batteground, or whatever PPV that is Raw vs Smackdown long after there is any distinction between the 2 brands lol.

Difference is that this time the roster is much larger... Would result in a whack of talent getting future endeavored, which they tend to try to avoid nowadays....

It only seems weird now because there are interbrand matches on Backlash due to stuff going on before the shakeup, but moving forward, it'll be separate. I think.

I just don't get the roster split. I think it's an incredibly daft idea that boxes them into things they don't need to box themselves into. You want to make SmackDown unique? Feature guys that you aren't using on Raw. You don't need to use everybody on every show. And when they do the drafts, it's just moving a lot of people from stale positions into a stale mix. They're just kicking up the dirt; it doesn't mean anything.

That they need to do this with their free PPVs shows that there just isn't interest enough in this.

That is such a good point. I think the best way they ever did it was in 2005 where 1 person went to a new show each week for 5 weeks. That led to some truly impactful moves, Cena and Angle to Raw and Batista to Smackdown are all segments I can remember fondly still 13 years later.

I've never been a fan of the brand split. I'd rather have your top group of guys wrestling on both shows. We have too many guys that are meaningless and worthless in the company. I'd rather have them concentrate on 30 guys or so and make them all mean something. and make ALL storylines and feuds means something.

But I realize this will eliminate a lot of jobs, which is the shitty side of things. But i do believe having 60+ people in a roster waters down the product.

Honestly, my own personal preference would be one 3 hour show on Monday and then maybe a taped one hour show that airs Saturday or Sunday Night. that's enough wrestling for me.

There used to be a demand for the duration of content they deliver, and now they need content for the duration they have to deliver. One of the positives you hear associated with the roster split is "there are more opportunities," but what it really means is just more guys need to be used, which ignores the fact that there is a reason they weren't primarily in the first place. It's really great for Curt Hawkins got a job back because they needed bodies, but is it really going to change the industry?

It really does water down the product, and it plays into the same myth that surrounds Vince Russo booking, in that more = better and that everyone being given an angle is a good thing. It actually just means there is less focus and less matters. It would be really sad if a bunch of people lose their jobs -- it really would -- but if they are talented enough individuals to make it in wrestling, then I'm sure that between ROH, TNA, New Japan, CMLL, EVOLVE and whatever the fuck else is out there, that they should be able to find more work in order to spread their wings and prove it. They might even be able to make more money, or at least develop at a rate faster than working 5-minute TV matches does, and they might get to work on their gimmick coming out of it. Ultimately, it can be good for the individuals and it might even be more stimulating for wrestling, in general.

The brand split works well from a touring standpoint.

For House shows now you know what you are getting if its a Raw/Smackdown brand show instead of finding out on the night your town has the b show and who knows what lower card you get.

TV wise They would feel the need to over play their top angles going into PPVs. eg Nakamura and styles would have nakamura low blowing AJ styles on raw and smackdown and getting an extra promo or 2 out of it. Compared to just having the smackdown promos which have been awesome but if they did it twice a week for 3 weeks we would have gotten so sick of it.

Belt Wise Roman reigns and Brock at the top and then 2 shows worth of main events twiddling their thumbs or just fighting for the IC title. Then the IC title players are doing nothing. they have 8 good tag teams one set of belts.

Too many wrestlers to all be fighting for 2 singles and 1 tag team titles would add prestige but anger fans thinking their guy should have the belt.

The house show point is well-made, and makes sense, in theory, but the reality is that attendance is down. The cold product has diminished interest, and when people don't care about that fixed roster, it being fixed isn't enough to compensate for that.

You make a good point about the TV, and that is certainly something they did. WWE wasn't exactly good prior to the roster split. Truth be told, though, I thought past the second low blow the Styles/Nakamura story needed to evolve, and Styles just looks silly now, and it's compromised the intensity of the rivalry. Believe it or not, given that Nakamura has only existed in the SmackDown world, there are probably "WWE fans" that have never seen him wrestle, given that Raw is statistically watched by more people than SmackDown or the Network specials. There's no way that he is generally as over as he could be, given that he just hasn't been given that exposure on Raw.

You're right about the belts, but it just goes back to the point about things mattering. Fans might get angry that not every tag team has had a run with the belts, but when all of them have it means absolutely nothing. It's barely trivia and it's impossible to keep track of who has held what and harder to justify why any of it matters. The belts are supposed to matter. If they don't, then they're not doing their job.

Belts really don't mean that much anymore. Haven't really since the Monday Night Wars era with all the hot shotting of the titles. Also, giving the belt to guys like Jinder and Khali really devalues it.
