Haha, Edge did an interview where he compared Jinder Mahal's current run to Randy Orton's build to the World Title. I remember being actually intrigued by Randy Orton, who had beaten Cactus Jack at Backlash and The Rock at WrestleMania, as well as had a fantastically hyped IC Title reign, which he secured after defeating Rob Van Dam. I also seem to recall him beating Benoit relatively credibly. Orton at 24 had a lot more upside than Mahal at 30.

Wait... huh? How the fuck did he rationalize that comparison? And did he do it with a straight face?

It was basically just about how Jinder is finding himself, and you can see him gaining confidence each week, and that once upon a time that was Randy Orton.

He also called The Singh Brothers by their old names, with the caveat that "I know them as this..." which to me was just a clever way of covering up he hasn't bothered to learn their current ring names.

The only mind you the ONLY flaw I will admit to is Jinder being placed in a gimmick where his heelish nature is associated with peoples fears of a certain group that he is not a part of(lets not kid ourselves) He could have just been an arrogant dick about how fucking jacked he is
and how we lack his discipline and commitment. |

What is this? I thought his gimmick is basically "I'm Indian so I'm better than you weak Americans". What's the fear part?

The above statement is as inane as its response of "How dare we discuss wrestling on a wrestling forum?" Don't fall into that trap, dude. Be better. Liking Mahal =/= him being flawless. Don't go full adamle.

Negative. I would like to know how one's opinion is a "BIG PROBLEM" today.
It is pretty obvious that the writers/vince/idontcarewho doesn't give a shit about the general opinions of the universe, as evidenced by their split of Enzo/Cass, facefucking us with Reigns, etc. |

Not to derail my own thread but Enzo/Cass together was getting stale. Enzo's speech tonight is like the first time I wasn't annoyed by him since the beginning.
but ya..Roman sucks. There is no comparison to how bad that whole situation is.. |

Lol, KIRA is no fool. Jinder is not flawless to him. Don't try that angle.

I never said "BIG PROBLEM." That is your emphasis. I said ironic fandom is a big problem, because it is. On the same show you have Brock and Joe trying to get people hooked on their legitimate program, you'll have goofy shit chasing people off. The indies is full of geekish shit that is so insecure it needs to let its already aware audience that it is self-aware, just so nobody gets caught unaware, you know? A big part of my gripe is that Mahal is a symptom of the WWE not caring about the direction they are going. I cancelled my Network subscription because of it. As much as I love classic wrestling, I cannot support the ultimate funnel it has all led to, and jobbers with very little genuine talent being pushed into main event roles that get me to change the channel. You vote with your money in this life, and I'm no longer supporting the WWE in any measure until they do start appealing to me a little bit more. Maybe I'm in the minority and the Indian diaspora has led to countless people of Indian descent supporting the WWE product all around the world? *Looks up SmackDown house show attendance; pulls at collar* But in this conversation it is easy to drop the "ironic" point in my original statement -- especially with all the straw-men and weird directions this conversation has taken. It's an ironic love that is my frustration on a wider scale. Not so much within KIRA's own personal life, but when you are trying to make money off people, an ironic love for your characters makes it harder to milk any sort of genuine emotional reaction, and it becomes harder to milk money from those people. Given that Mahal had very little support 6 months ago, I can only wonder where those people who currently praise his title reign were. Sometimes talentless lugs do well in pro-wrestling, and it works. I'm a big proponent of things working. The thing is, Mahal is not working. Not only is he not working, but it seems he is losing the company money (ratings and attendance are down, and they lost at least my subscription). If someone sincerely suggested Mahal as their guilty pleasure in wrestling, or said "Hey, I genuinely like the dude" I'd be like "whatever." If he got super white-hot over and led to a revolution, I'd be happy for the revolution. But none of that is happening. Don't kid yourself. It's a detached and disaffected appreciation for a Family Guy skit of a champion. |
