Wrestler Likability Score Card
Some wrestlers are loved as face and heel where as others can never get over either way.Usually it is a combination of booking and the character itself. Most of the time we discuss the booking because it is rather difficult to pin down what we like or don't like about a wrestling character.

The Story Solution by Eric Edson (He is Professor of Screenwriting and Director of the Graduate Program in Screenwriting at California State University) lists nine attributes for likeable characters:


1. Courage

2. Unfair Injury

3. Skill

4. Funny

5. Just Plain Nice

6. In Danger

7. Loved By Friends And Family

8. Hard Working

9. Obsessed


In order for character to be likeable, they only need to have at least five out of nine. Many characters have more, but five is the minimum for us to want to see a story about this character.

I thought it would be interesting to apply this to wrestling characters and see the results. I'll start off with 2 characters : Roman Reigns and Bret Hart

I did a write-up on Roman Reigns, but it got deleted. Basically, I don't think people buy him being courageous because they don't see him as being in any real danger. I think those two qualities are linked, like hard-working and obsessed are.

1. Courage
I don't think people buy his tough guy act. Was he courageous when he took the powder in the 2016 Royal Rumble? I'm actually going to go with "No."

2. Unfair Injury
He's booked to be hurt sometimes, but people know he's not really hurt. And they've never really been unfair. He gets beaten up, he takes time off.

3. Skill
Reigns is undeniably skilled, but because of other areas, people perceive him as not being as skilled as he is. I'd say this has to be a "Yes," but skilled wrestlers obviously don't need to be perceived as such if they are deficient in other areas.

4. Funny
No.

5. Just Plain Nice
No.

6. In Danger
Not believable danger. Everybody knows he is chosen one.

7. Loved By Friends And Family
Sometimes. The Rock raised his hand and The Usos were his buddies. He also wrestled against them and had his best friend turn against him. I'd call this a wash and therefore a default "No."

8. Hard Working
Yes. Again, perception says no, but I don't think you can objectively put this against Reigns.

9. Obsessed
While I think hard-working is something you have to give Reigns, people do know that he wanted to play football more. I'd actually say "No" to this one.

OVERALL: 2/9, maybe 3 if you give him family and friends.

Yes. Dude jumps off ladders for fun.

2. Unfair Injury
He's willing to risk it.

3. Skill
Yes.

4. Funny
Not in any sort of comedic way, but he does have an ironic poise and stands outside the "Grr, I'm gruff and tough" professional wrestler. I'm going to give it to him.

5. Just Plain Nice
He seems nice enough to the ladies. He's never been presented as an asshole. In fact, I don't think he's been a heel in the WWE since his New Brood days. He forgave his brother for killing his dog.

6. In Danger
Dude puts himself in it for fun.

7. Loved By Friends And Family
His brother teams with him.

8. Hard Working
Jeff makes it look easy, but that doesn't mean he works hard. He brings up his end of the team work and has managed to claw his way to three World Titles.

9. Obsessed
He seems obsessive. The dude throws himself into whatever it is he is doing. He operates on a different plane to everyone else. Does he eat, sleep and breathe wrestling? Maybe not, but he's presented as a dude who used to bounce around on a trampoline and has now crafted this entire persona for himself. I'm going to give it to him.

OVERALL: 9/9

I'm not sure. She seems scared of everything and goes out there and perform, but I don't know if I'd call it courage.

2. Unfair Injury
Does a mental disability count? No? Okay, no.

3. Skill
I'll tick this up to "Yes," even though I find her underwhelming in the ring. She is perceived as good female ring talent.

4. Funny
She's "fun" with the exuberance and stuff.

5. Just Plain Nice
This she triple-ticks.

6. In Danger
Weirdly enough, I'm going to say "No." There has never really been a strong, competent female threat that has really put her mounting success at risk. Nia Jax was just a bigger opponent for her to chop down.

7. Loved By Friends And Family
Loved by her family, but her friends are the crowd. Her relationship with Sasha Banks seems insincere on WWE TV. Behind the scenes (and the WWE have introduced this as a plot point) one of her best friends is now a bitter enemy. I'm going to chalk this up to half-a-point.

8. Hard Working
Yes, I'd say so.

9. Obsessed
To the point where it has almost been presented as a detriment.

OVERALL: 5.5/9

She scored much higher than I thought she would. Good for her.

Rusev has not yet destroyed America. Yes, Rusev is benevolent.

Never physically, but there is a massive conspiracy protecting WWE from his takeover. Yes, Rusev is unfairly jeopardized.

7. Loved By Friends And Family
Lana only has eyes for Rusev. If you could find Bulgaria on a map, you'd see them spelling his name with candles. Yes, Rusev is beloved.

8. Hard Working
