Ya, I'm still not good at sticking with my role once the game starts. If my team isn't handing off farm properly to the right people, or converging on fights the right way in the beginning, I tend to start playing sloppier as the game goes on. Toward the end of 5-stack game, I was getting so sloppy because things just weren't going our way. Once that lag hit, we lost a couple fights, and I just knew it was curtains for us.

I saw you were pulling those top camps as mirana and that was awesome that first game. We pretty much controlled that lane easy as cake. First time I'd ever played spectre online, and he was able to clean-up really easily.

I play lich really well, but I suck at keeping him as a hard support because I usually end up accidentally KSing in teamfights and turning him more into a semi-carry. I do the same when I play CM too, because their ranged nukes are too good at finishing people who are running away when the melee carries aren't able to finish the kill. But it usually works out because lich is pretty much a guaranteed lane-winner anyways. So paired properly, he can be brutal. But when I play him, I suck at warding/pulling/stacking, because then I feel like I do worse as him when I don't get the right amount of farm for a couple key items.

Yeah my one buddy who plays Lich often (the Enchantress in that game, actually) builds him like some kind of carry. It baffles me, he goes Skadi and a bunch of other expensive items. I don't know. I've been really focusing on playing more hard support lately. Want to focus more on creep stacking etc.

Was reading a cool Huskar guide today. I love playing Huskar but find that I drop off way too hard mid/late game. I want to try a game starting in mid then immediately roaming once I get my 6, and rotate out of mid to let someone else farm it while I just roam and gank and rush into Armlet. I usually stick too long in mid and lose most of the prime ganking opportunity

Proper support in a game can make it or break it I've learned. But I find that I get stuck against match-ups that aren't optimal also sometimes, and I don't know how to correct it as the game goes on. Like that 2nd game, I bought BKB like a moron against a team with abilities that pierce spell immunity, like stupid spirit breaker. Waste of almost 4k right there, that never even helped me stay alive. Should have bought MKB or blademail probably to try and counter his ridiculous perma-stun nonsense.

A lot of that just comes with knowing most other heroes, I guess.

And the role thing can be tough. That first game our team was a hodgepodge of whatever. I basically played Mirana like a 5-position simply because that's what our team makeup really called for. Tried to do the same-ish as Venomancer the next but... I dunno, just had a horrible start and could never really get into a good rhythm. Those 2 or 3 teamfights we lost during the lag sealed that one for us. Should've been a winnable game when we got that first rax

Ya, we had no supports that game IIRC, so Mirana was the obvious choice. Venom typically is a good support, simply because he can push lanes really well. But he goes better paired with other heroes that have disables, and we really didn't have enough disables that game. I think that's what our main problem was. We had damage, but no real lockdown abilities.

mhm. I usually play WD when I'm feeling support-y. Been on a good roll with Veno lately though. WD would have been a much better pick that game I think

I just love the skill ceiling this game has. There's just so much in every game that literally everyone could be better at. It's a game about efficiency. Denying as much gold to the enemy team while gaining as much as you can. A death to the enemy team means lost gold for you, and gained gold for them. Early deaths can throw the whole game away and make it so much harder for the team.

Played a game with all foreign speaking players on my team and all 2 of them did was feed early game, while I hadn't died for the first time until like 9 minutes in, and I could tell they were talking crap about me for not rushing to help them when they were doing stupid things and dying. No, idiots. Stop rushing in and trying to force teamfights. lol

The biggest mental hurdle to get over is when you're down in a game, especially as a support/low position player, to stop trying to go farm lanes that are pushed out a bit. 99 times out of 100 it results in a ridiculously easy kill for their super-fed carry. So many times though, we'll be turtling and our Jakiro will try to push the top lane out to get a tower or something and gets 2-shot by the Razor who TPs to take care of the "threat"... annoying.


The skill cap is definitely high, which makes it a super-versatile game. And like you said, EVERYBODY can always be doing something better, which is cool. As a support, you have everything warded? Cool, go stack the large camps for your carries. As a core, your jungle is farmed and waiting for respawns? Try and get an easy gank somewhere or find a free-farm lane to sit in. Look for opportunities to do Rosh kills, ways to block enemy spawn camps, etc. Small advantages that may not show up on the score sheet. Hell even just some "meta" scanning of the enemy team to see what items they might have to adapt your own build style to, or whatever.

Tons of strategy involved and literally every single game plays out differently.

Buddy got an invite to the Heroes of the Storm alpha. Not sure how that one will do. Blizzard will make sure the game is polished as shit obviously, but the whole skill trees and lack of items makes me wary.

I just hate how identical the heroes look to many Dota ones. It's like they didn't even try to do anything new. The graphics just don't appeal to me, and it looks like they've totally copied all of the standard heroes. I know Dota 2 came after LoL, and that a lot of Dota 2 heroes look like LoL's, but Dota 1 came first too, and a lot of heroes were from that game too.

So, what I guess I'm saying is that I wish when one of these games would come out, that it would just be totally new, with its own heroes that aren't borderline copies of ones that exist in other games. Like, surprise me or something.

Yeah, I get that. I would just think, y'know... Valve bought the rights, you'd think they would have exclusivity now.



I mean, come on. I've seen a bunch of 4-shot pics like that comparing them all, and it's kind of stupid how many look identical. I just like Dota 2's art style. It's really unique compared to the other games, and it has style. Heroes of the Storm looks like it's trying to be too serious.

Blizzard is really stubborn with this kind of thing. The whole reason Dota 2 even came into being is because Blizzard wanted to charge for the original map and reap the profits because it was made on their software, basically.

You think they would be more open and encouraging to the playerbase creatively using the map editor. I don't know the timeline of all this, I'm fairly sure it happened before the Activision merger, though. Man I would love to blame Activision for this because F those guys lol

But back on topic, I agree. Would've been better if Blizzard made a different "themed" MOBA. Maybe like just the Starcraft universe or something? Get away from the medieval/fantasy stuff to differentiate it from LoL/Dota. /shrug

Or maybe I'm just totally wrong about how they got rights in the first place. Dunno. I'm just bored at seeing Blizzard go back now and push out the same stuff with the idea of "It was ours first" as their logic.

They're a huge company that could obviously come out with something new, but they're riding the coattails of other success.

On the whole though I agree, even the fact that they're making a "Blizzard MOBA" just screeeeeeams of "ME TOO!"


But after seeing the LoL/Dota revenues this past year, I'm surprised that MORE companies aren't going this route.

Man makes you really think about how much revenue they must have been pulling in during WoW's peak (WOTLK) with almost 2x the subs they have currently. I think they had less microtransactions though but still, for a game that's 10 years old and in decline, to still be pulling in over $700M in revenue is pretty remarkable

Yeah those LoL numbers are insane. But that's what you get with a popular game that uses microtransactions. Bugs me that they call them MMOs though. Would think Joystiq would know better than that. MOBA is the proper term, and they're a totally different genre than MMOs. So it seems weird that they even compare them like that.

I'm still waiting for an MMO that feels like an actual world again. I hope other MMO companies don't see this trend and decide they'd rather make MOBAs instead of MMOs. MMO players are just getting left behind by the promise of a bigger market these days.

Also, I'd love to try LoL, but I just have no urge to play enough to be good at it because I refuse to spend money on a game like this just to have basic functionality. I dislike that they cycle in/out new heroes all the time, and that in order to play certain ones you have to pay to unlock them. Meh. I like the way Dota2 does it, where I can play any of the 100+ heroes.

Honestly got so into it that I've spent like $30 in the game since I started playing. Usually in $10 increments when new treasures are released. And I've gotten item sets in the events too, so that's cool. Also pieced together sets I really wanted from the market, because it can be super cheap depending on what you want. It has gotten me to play other heroes too because I feel more invested in them and want to learn them.

I usually hate the idea of spending money in cash shops, but they don't have any "pay-to-win" stuff. It's just vanity items and it's the first game in years that I've put this much time into, so spending a little money on it doesn't seem unjustifiable, considering it's a free game.

I have no qualms with the purchases for ingame vanity items. Personally haven't spent any but couple of my usual crew I play with have spent probably about $60 each over the course of the past few years.

During the recent Year Beast event my one friend got 8 or 9 hero sets from winning games. Pretty rad. I sporadically receive item crap, my favourite is my boring wooden mask for Witch Doctor

With all the badass art and details that go into this game, they should make a F2P MMO and/or RPG or something. I really enjoy their characters and premise, but MOBA's don't jive with me (probably b/c lack of time to polish high skill demand of other HUMANS).
