Daniel Bryan and my Top 10 Questions
While I believe Daniel Bryan's recent claims of having seizures as a post-concussion side effect extremely alarming for a number of reasons... I still have a number of questions that linger in my mind...
1. How long has he been hiding these seizures? 2. He knew full well his own symptoms but as recently as a few weeks ago was BEGGING to be brought back to face AJ Styles, Balor, Joe, Owens and Nakamura. How long until he flips his decision? 3. Did someone witness a seizure? Did Daniel Bryan have a seizure in front of the WWE doctor? Fellow wrestlers? His wife? In public? 4. How the close relationship between Brie and Bryan, Brie and Nikki, Nikki to Cena and Cena to Vince had on this entire situation. 5. The new testing Bryan underwent is NEW and not even PEER REVIEWED yet. How will this testing hold up in the future and if/when it becomes reviewed? 6. Is Daniel Bryan playing for time? Or in other words, say what the WWE wants you to say in order to slowly and methodically dwindle his contract down? 7. If you were a wrestling promotor and Daniel F'N Bryan was free and willing to sign a contract to wrestle for your company... would you? 8. The Chris Benoit/Concussion lawsuits effect... if the Benoit factor was not a THING or the concussion lawsuits, how much an issue/precaution would this have on WWE's decision to even test or care for these sort of injuries? 9. If Daniel Bryan was not married, how would this have influenced his decision to accept the results of his most recent testing? 10. I bet AT LEAST 60% of wrestlers on the roster would have similar results (maybe not seizures but in brain damage lesions in other areas of the brain) if they were honest with themselves regarding their own concussion history and/or underwent similar thorough testing. |

1-6. Nobody outside of the situation knows.
7. There are definitely people that would book him. 8-9. See 1-6. 10. I'd go as far as saying just about nobody on the roster wrestled a style as potentially damaging to the body or brain for a prolonged amount of time as Daniel Bryan did, especially during his 10 years on the indies. Not to mention he's clearly somewhat susceptible to concussions/head trauma given he says he had 2-3 of them within the first 6 months of his wrestling career. So I would guess nowhere even remotely close to 60% of the roster would have similar results. |

I don't believe anything shady is going on as you are insinuating. Concussions are serious business but are a relatively new injury that professionals don't completely understand (new in the sense that it used to just be getting your bell rung). I think Bryan had a moment of clarity when he decided his long term health was more important than short term success.

It's hardly surprising me that Bryan was begging to come back. Yes he knew he was getting seizures and the like but he sought out some of the best doctors on the planet and they all said they didn't find anything wrong with him. So he couldn't understand why he wasn't being cleared and was quite okay with the risks.
And just look at the WWE roster now. Of course he wanted to come back to work with these guys. Bryan loves wrestling and probably would have done it until he was 80 if he were physically capable of doing so. He's smart for finally decided to hang 'em up after the last batch of tests. I'm sure a part of him died when he had to do it. Just like when Edge retired I could see Bryan going through a period of time where he needs to spend some time away from the industry altogether to get used to leading a "normal" life, but I'm sure the door will be wide open for him if and when he wants to get involved in a non-wrestling role with the company. |

1. Years. If the Observer is correct, his last one was about four years ago.
2. Highly doubt it. 3. Doubt it since Bryan said nobody knew he was suffering from seizures. 4. Outside of Brie, probably no effect the others had or else it might have been teased before by Bryan and/or the sheets. Only other relationship that played a real role was Bryan to Vince since that was the only one mattering in the end. 5. Considering CTE type tests are still relatively new, this one probably has a strong chance of becoming the new standard. Think Observer hinted this could end up being used in sports like MMA because of how comprehensive it is for brain coverage. 6. Think even with the retirement, his active contract is still frozen with the WWE similar to Rey's at the time. Would need to sue the WWE to get it voided but doubt he wants to for his health and not hurt Brie's job status in the company. 7. If I was sleazy enough, sure but also have him sign an injury waiver so I wouldn't get dragged into any future legal mess. 8. That's been a thing discussed a lot about the WWE's medical testing and likely if it wasn't for the concussion lawsuit and not wanting to hurt Reign's Mania plans again, they might have cleared him by now. Doesn't mean he'd get a big push or top status since his reliability took a huge hit with the recent injuries. 9. Probably no difference in the end since the results were bad enough to scare him into retirement. 10. A few like Barrett, Ziggler, and Fandango would probably fail easily while others would probably be close since the test Bryan took was pretty strict in what counted as passing. |
