What do you think of Shane McMahon as a wrestler?
I always thought it was ridiculous to put him up against legit wrestlers, like that recent HIAC match against Taker, but I am impressed with the risk he's been willing to take with his high end maneuvers and stuff. Love his Coast to Coast move, too. Still, never bought him as a legit threat to anyone.
Your thoughts? |

I actually don't mind it as much as many others. I don't think of Shane as a "non-wrestler" so much as I think of him as a rich kid who has had all the best training money can buy. He was picking everybody's brains as he grew up in the business, and was always a freak athlete and a gifted performer who probably would have been a great full-time wrestler if he wasn't put into a suit.
I'm not the dude's biggest fan or anything, and I'll admit that I never saw how he was presented prior to 2001 without a revisionist's eyes. Maybe if I had watched him during his European Title run, I'd have thought him far less "legit" than I do now. As it stands, he's been doing this longer than most people have been before they win a World Title. |

I think I've mentioned it before, but his 2003 feud with Kane, which culminated with the Ambulance Match @ Survivor Series 2003, was amazing and the only bright spot in the year for the company, IMHO (of course I may have negative bias due to that being the year I was dealing with my mother's ill health, but I digress).
My favorite match from their feud: WWE Unforgiven 2003 - Shane McMahon vs Kane in a Last Man Standing Match |

Sorry to hear about your mom, but be rest assured, this was a terrible year for the RAW brand.

I was never that into the Kane/Shane feud. I was a mark for Kane, so I wanted to see him destroy people, so I didn't really buy into the whole face/heel dynamic of it. That's one program where I kind of do feel like Shane got too much shine. Kane as the unmasked psycho didn't really endear itself to me as much as it did others, weirdly enough. While the change was probably appreciated for others who had seen the gimmick die, I sheepishly enjoyed him, so the change was moving away from what I enjoyed seeing.
I don't know whether or not to go back and view it again through more modern eyes. I might see it as better work than I did at the time. |

I remember liking aspects of 2003 on the SmackDown side. Well, what I could catch. SmackDown's television deal came up in Australia, so I couldn't see a lot of the rise of Mattitude or John Cena.

He was fun to watch. I believed in him as a legit threat simply because he had that dangerous element of a guy that wasn't afraid to take chances. I mean, his elbow drop off the top of the tron at Backlash 2001 onto Big Show was insane.
I seem to recall his match with Wrestlemania 15 against X-Pac was pretty good as well, and as someone touched upon in this thread, he's a "rich kid who can afford the best training". I wouldn't wanna see him wrestle full-time though. For storyline purposes now and then it worked, especially the Kane feud which was due to Kane tombstoning Linda, but if he wrestled full time on a weekly basis, it'd probably just put him over above all the legit wrestlers, and it'd lose it's appeal quickly. |

Wrestlemania that year was fucking solid too. Jericho/Michaels, Austin/Rock, Lesnar/Angle, Hardy/Mysterio, Undertaker/Nathan Jones... |

Turned into a huge Shane McMahon fan after his SummerSlam 2000 bump. Guy climbs up the titan tron to get away from Steve Blackman... who follows him with a kendo stick in hand. Shane ends up trapped at the top and Blackman hits him with the kendo stick until he falls from the top. Never seen anything like it at the time.
Then he faces Big Show and JUMPS from the same height if not higher. Guy had already earned my respect. Then he faces Kurt Angle in one of the greatest matches either of them has ever had. Shane McMahon takes a beating I'd compare with the beating Mick Foley took in Hell In A Cell. Guy is a legend. Not that good these days, but respectable. |

'Taker took on A-Train and Big Show in a 2-on-1 Handicap match. I think your confusion may be that (IIRC), Jones was supposed to tag with him. Anyway, Wasn't a fan of the match. Triple H v. Booker T for the WHC was garbage, and the Women's Championship match was average at best. I did enjoy seeing Rock finally get his "WrestleMania win" over Austin, and Y2J v. HBK was awesome as was Lesnar v. Angle, save for Brock's ill-advised top rope maneuver. It wasn't a terrible 'Mania, just wasn't as good as x8, IMHO. Also, Hogan v. Vince felt completely unnecessary and did no favors for my opinion of the show. I'd rate it about a 5/10 overall.

Wild as it sounds, Shane could hang with the guys.
Remember Rob Van Dam introduced the Van Terminator on ECW. Next thing you know, Shane's doing the same thing on WWE TV. That's a hard thing to do for an average guy like him. |

Yeah, Jones was meant to tag with 'Taker but was "taken out" backstage before the match. In real life mainly coz he was fucking awful. I only added that match in my post for comedic effect, but you pointing out the error I made has now ruined it for me. |

I still think his match against Test at Summerslam 99 is one of his best matches in my opinion, very underrated. My thoughts of him is that he's not afraid to put his body on the line and was quite decent for someone who isn't a wrestler.

Test/Shane Vs. The Mean Street Posse is my favorite of his. I think Shane hits a shooting star press or something.

It was cool at first but he's selfish and immature as a performer. He gets to do things other guys aren't allowed to and gets all the bells and whistles. I respect him as he seems a nice bloak, but his efforts are usually misguided.

Against X Pac at WM15 he topped any expectation. Vs Test at Summerslam 99 was great fun. Vs Vince at WM17 was fun. vs Angle at KOTR 2001 was awesome and peak.
Basically, he can do a gimmick match well to the point it can be great. 15 years ago... |

I remember marking out so hard when he jumped off the top of the Unforgiven 2003 set and missed Kane. Could've been really brutal but I respected him even more as a performer after watching that match.

if you bring up Shane McMahon to me ever, the only thing I remember is him getting his testes electrocuted by Kane on RAW

Yeah. That was part of the build to their Unforgiven 2003 match...felt wrong to laugh at a grown man getting his balls electrocuted, but I'm sure I probably did even though had it been for real it would have been naturally painful as fuck.
