Had I known how fun, open ended, deep, satisfying, and just plain fun (x2) this game was I would have day one'd this bitch. With news of a big Year 2-ish expansion, I won't make that mistake again.
Based on previews and research of the series when this launched I found this to be Capcom's Destiny before Destiny, in terms of a real-time action RPG that you play with others. Now playing it there is definitely that vibe, with a very similar game loop of 'party up, gear up, missions/side quests/free roam, back to base, gear up, etc'. The multiplayer function is very awkward, with an odd take that everybody exists in a server (or Session), but otherwise play independent of each other like... concurrent single player. There's only one area in the home base that acts as a hub where you see other players. Once you post activities using a literal quest board, which essentially feels like GTA's job lists, others can join. It's clunky but you get used to it. The combat controls, despite how it looks and what you'd think Capcom would do, is not Hack n Slash, where attacks auto track enemies. The combat however is so satisfying that you'll 'get it' once you take out your first big beast. Controls are a learning curve and you'll constantly ask why the hell is this or that, but again you'll come to find it works for a reason. True Story: So me and three others are hunting this raptor looking asshole, but to capture. He's a smartass who actually picks up rocks, which blocks attacks from the front. He'll also throw the damn thing if you're not careful. I use my slinger, a universal weapon, to shoot rocks at him which makes him drop the rock eventually. In this time my other buddy lays big damage from the side - until he gets roundhoused. Mid and large monsters have attacks from all sides, within their own movelists you have to learn by observation. We finally get him weak enough to limp away to his lair. There we set a trap while he's sleep and wake him up before he recovers too much HP from resting. Bastard needs to be led into the trap, so I act as bait pissing him off with more sling shot hits. He falls into the trap, but we forgot to bring any tranq. We kill him and fail the mission. But we get him next time. Like GTA or Red Dead, there's plently stories that form out of just playing the game that sounds like bullshit when you tell non-players. |

The Great Sword is kinda the marquee weapon of the series but when you get started I recommend Sword & Shield. It feels closest to how this game looks like it's supposed to play so it's a good transition from other sword swinging games.
After that try whatever, but never judge too quickly. Once a weapon clicks, you'll wanna put a ring on it. |

I think I got as far as to hunting down the Pukei-Pukei. Then some new game came out and I never went back to it.
Great game regardless. Better with buddies. |

Picked this up pretty cheap and have been playing on and off this week.
Still going through the early process of finding my main weapon, I've narrowed it down to Charge Blade (I think I pretty much used this exclusively in 4U), Insect Glaive, Greatsword, Gunlance & Longsword. I like the Bow too but it just makes everything way too easy. I miss all the 4U monsters already, hope they bring back big frog, trunk monkey, penis dragon and inflatable shark in the DLC. |

Some monsters from past games are coming back in the expansion, fans say.

Beat the final boss last night, I think, I was half asleep and somehow didn't die. Now Geralt of Rivia has shown up on a contract. Maybe I dreamt it.

Smaller than you'd think a game of this scope would be.

I've put like 300 hours into this somehow and I am definitely picking up Iceborne… but not on release. I think it's about time I started working on my backlog.
My Charge Blade is going back on the shelf for now. |

Most satisfying weapon for me by a wide margin. I like using Gunlance and Insect Glaive too but they just can't compare to hitting those SAEDs.

My girlfriend got me this for XMas. Is there a good solo campaign or is it mainly a online to kill big monster type of game?

It's solo to a degree. But, like most of the games these days, you're gonna have to jump into the co-op pool to tackle the fun quests/difficult monsters.

I did around 300 hours solo and had a great time, only things you cant really do by yourself are the raid bosses (Behemoth, Ancient Leshen & Kulve Taroth). Monsters scale to accommodate solo / multiplayer so its not really any harder.

Played it for a few hours. Seems alright but fairly easy. I think the updates made the game easier to get everyone up to speed for the expansion. I had to ensure I didn't put on any of the beginner armor that had insane stats.
Love killing big ass monsters though. I can't find their HP bar anywhere on the screen though so that is a tad annoying. Been using a 1 hand and shield but the shield seems pretty useless against the big fellow so will swap to a more offensive approach. |

There's no hp bar, but they have certain animations and 'desperation' patterns that show they're about to die. When they flee back to their nests tend to be the halfway point.
Every weapon style has some kind of gameplay loop that leads to an ultimate attack or super buffed version of an attack for that burst damage. Attacks on the head does indeed count as critical damage, and permanently removing a piece of the monster weakens attacks or defence related to that piece. |
