Piper was fantastic in his prime. But "past his prime" Piper has what feels like just as long of a run. One could argue it takes away some of his luster.

Graham as champion sold out MSG all but once (lone time against Peter Maivia). Not even Bruno had a run like Graham did.

I'm not sure really, again... didn't see much Graham other than a few promos/Youtube clips from his prime.
But Piper after 1987 had some fleeting moments of greatness but wasn't the "iconic" performer he was beforehand. |

Good promo, should have been a manager after 88. Biggest claim to fame was a talk show spot and a great movie. Better actor than he's given credit for. Loved his guest star spot on TV's Highlander. *Legend: to hold a spot down that other guys deserve because you have more pull |

"If there was value in it people would have done it". Pretty sure Piper's Pit has been repeated constantly over the last 30 years if you need a DIRECT example. As far as his character in general, if you can't see the Piper influence in guys like Pillman, Ambrose or basically anyone who has tried the "loudmouth lunatic" gimmick, you're just being one of those biased assholes. Wait until STD finds out about this.

And whose spots was Piper taking after '88? It's not like he was hogging the main event picture or anything. Do you think he just should have left altogether? Who "deserved" Piper's spot after '88?

Right. Once he came back in '89 though it's not like he went all Triple H holding everyone else down or The Rock coming in and "robbing" younger guys of WrestleMania main event spots. I'm wondering who got held back by Piper. He was kinda just "there". Even his one lowly IC title run in '92 was just a means to put Bret over.

If that week long transitional token WWE legend title reign as a tag champion in the mid 2000's was what Destor was talking about when he says Piper was taking spots from other guys after his run on top then... Jesus. That would be a hell of a reach.
I'm sure it wasn't what he meant though. |

It was both. I don't think it was just that week-long nostalgia run, and the phrase "nostalgia run" itself should say something. I think it's just that he was in major positions that other people could be in consistently and constantly from after 1988 until about 2009. He may not have put every down to the Sleeper, but he was there and clogging up a spot someone else could have taken -- which is fair criticism.

It's kind of hard judging a guy from an era I never saw.

He wasn't "clogging up" anything. He was a big enough star to warrant legit full-time main eventer status and he was always below that or out of the picture altogether. No one should have taken his spot against Bret at WrestleMania. No one should have taken his short feud with Lawler. What else did he even do that "took a spot" period? He had a filler feud with Flair but it never really went anywhere outside of some house show matches I think. We can argue WCW and his Hogan feud. But first thing's first. Pretending he was undeservedly hogging up the spotlight at any point in his WWF run(s) post '88 is just... CLEARLY insane. lol

Yeah, I don't remember the Halloween Havoc one. I just remember the Starrcade one because I was pumped for Piper winning the title but then they were suddenly like "Oh, BTW. Non-title. LOL"

They were actually two of the biggest drawing PPV's from 96-98, which to me proved Piper was still a draw even if his work sucked.

looking back at his 89 return, they really kind of wasted him. It's perplexing to me on why they used Morton Downey to be the heel in his big return. then he just kind of floundered around until he had a pretty forgettable feud with Rude and Bad News.
From Mania to Summerslam, he didn't do anything meaningful. not sure why |

Didn't stop Warrior from being massively over and beloved by all and it didn't stop Piper.

I feel like 90% of all matches not featuring jobbers in WWF during that time ended with non-finishes. They even main evented WrestleMania with a DQ finish at one point. lol

I like wrestlers protecting themselves. I like stars coming in and helping a product. For some reason Piper hanging around SmackDown in 2003 isn't fondly remembered by me.
