WWE 2k18 (PS4/XB1/Switch and PC eventually most likely)
2k have revealed details about the upcoming WWE 2k18 and Gamespot have the skinny on what they entail. The headlines are that 8 man matches are now in, a 'revamped graphics engine' and changes to both career and universe modes. But let's look at the details, because they say this every year.

It's only taken them 16 years to get back to a point of having 8 man matches.

If James Ellsworth isn't the guy you're beating up when looking at moves in Create-a-Moveset then fuck this game.

They usually don't show looks of the game until Summerslam so I'm not worried about that. What I am worried about is, like Hasney pointed out, they say the same shit every year and it's a small tweak with a new skin. I've been harping on Universe mode needing the most attention due to the replay factor of the game being almost entirely in that mode, yet I hear it's pretty much the same thing every year. This is why I haven't bought the game in years.

What if they didn't show the models to Gamespot so they will BLOW US AWAY come SummerSlam?

Feels like they work really hard on one or two entrances so they can show those off. The Bray Wyatt one looks really good, for example, but they still can't seem to get something like Randy Orton ' s strobes to match his music. Those are just entrances though, not the actual gameplay which is, I guess, a big deal.

That archtype feature was in the series before. So add another old feature touted as new again. It adds a little bit to tne gameplay, but its nothing compared to a full on logic system.
Years later and they still haven't ripped off Shadow of Mordors nemesis system for universe mode. I thought it was so obvous that it would be great for a wrestling game, but I guess not. |

There are still a handful of move animations dating all the way back to the first SmackDown game. 18 years in the making.

In all seriousness though, I'll keep tabs on this game in the lead-up just as I have done every single year since Shut Your Mouth. I miss the days of the annual SmackDown game being a date I'd have circled on the calendar and every piece of info getting me more and more pumped. Remember the SmackDown Countdown? Getting to see something new literally every day was amazing at the time.
But for years now all of the "hype" has been fluff. I see no need to ever buy the WWE games on Day 1 because I know realistically I'm gonna get bored fast of the same tired engine. I'd love to be wrong about this one, because I'd love to have a WWE game to genuinely look forward to. And some of the stuff mentioned so far would be really intriguing if it's legitimate. But that's a huge if given the way the series has gone. |

I'll get it for my birthday. Someone does every year since it's around then and everyone knows I like wrestling and games.

Seriously having more than a yr in development could do wonders for this series
WWE 2K games are worse than Assassin's Creed when it comes to selling the same crap with a new coat of paint You lot can have 2K I'll be over in the Fire Pro Wrestling Camp. |

I also miss the days when the WWE games were actually of a good quality. I haven't bought a WWE game since WWE 2K14 and I never even played it. I still have it in it's cellophane somewhere. Before then, I would always look forward to the next WWE game and pre-order it and then play it pretty much constantly once I got it. The last WWE game I actually played was WWE '13. Now, I really don't give a shit about WWE games. For the last few years, all I've heard are bad things about WWE games and seen nothing but glitches and complaints appear on the internet. I think the last time I read a really good review about a WWE game was SvR06, which actually was a really good game in my opinion. After that, the games began to slowly just be the same as last year but with a new cover and a new wrestler or two. |

Do people still move around like they are being weighed down by sandbags?
Last SvR game I bout was the one with Hassan. Edit: Wait I got one at a pawn shop for 5 bucks....WWE 13? and was highly disappointed. |

A new engine or really drastic changes isn't going to happen as long as Yukes is handling almost all the work for the games. 2K getting Visual Concepts to lend some help is good but not enough for the series. |

There were so few changes last year bar a couple of gameplay tweaks and a shitty promo engine that it's plausible that they did spend all their time on a new engine for this year alongside actual changes to career and universe that they didn't do last year.
Not exactly holding my breath though. |

Bliss' face on the other hand...how the hell could they not have done better than that on her and get Bayley, whom many here consider somewhat inferior in the looks department (personally, I don't really totally agree, but I digress), nearly dead on?!

I just had a random thought. If there's new models for this new engine, but the old models are compatible... Is there going to be 'premium' models and some are still using the old models? There's 120 guys on this new roster, they can't do them all in a year I bet....

You know there will be. I have always said since they started scanning guys that if they do one they need to do them all. The difference between models is so obvious it is horrendous.

Yeah, but I'm thinking multiple tiers, like:
1) Scanned and new model for 2k18 2) Scanned and 2k17 model 3) Not scanned, but redone for 2k18 4) Not scanned and 2k17 model 2 and 3 can be interchangeable depending on how good the new modelling/engine is. |

I'm cautiously optimistic that the whole main roster got scanned just because you could hypothetically send the Raw roster to be scanned one day, then SmackDown, then NXT etc.
People like Jinder, Rhyno, and Curt Hawkins will probably have the new models just because they didn't have models last year. But guys like Bo Dallas and Curtis Axel were probably put on the back burner and will just retain their 2k17 models. The legends are always gonna be awkward too since they can't be scanned on account of being dead/not representative of the "era" their playable character. |

Added to this, the developers working on a brand new character archetype system known as ‘fighting styles.' Each wrestler in the roster is set up with a particular archetype, like high-flyer or giant, which reflects their physique, moveset, and physical prowess in the ring. This is not only to reflect the variety in the roster, but also to give players diving into Create-A-Wrestler more defined archetypes to attach themselves to.
2K has said this is only for career mode now. |

My only wish is that the changes to the gameplay actually make the game feel different to previous years. Its why i get so bored so quickly, you just feel like you're playing the same game as last year with a different roster.

At the end of the day this is based on a near 20yr combat engine. They can tweak it all they want but the underlying DNA is this arcade wrestling game called Smackdown!.
At this point it's high time to start from scratch. Bottom up, new engine. Maybe even a new developer. Any potential, those sparks of brilliance, that the series occasionally had is weighed down by the overall gameplay. It's almost the same issue Call of Duty has. Each game would have one or two interesting ideas, but you're still playing CoD once that fresh car smell fades. Any annual game really. Then again, maybe people are fine with WWE2k being what it is. It's still fun and the multiplayer is consistently good by design. I personally have a hard time getting back in without custom soundtracks for CAWs since 90% of the reason for getting it was running our created promotions and not having our characters coming down to specific music hit us hard. |

The multiplayer, like the rest of the game, is terrible by design. The stupid shit that happens due to the shitty ass engine is what can make matches fun.
Would be nice if they fixed the fucking targeting after 6 years of it being broken at least. |
