Tribute thread for The Great Antonio
So me and RP were talking the other day about how much we loved the infamous Inoki vs Great Antonio shoot. Heres the vid. If you've seen it, watch it again. It never gets old. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Mm2ATZzBuVU So I decided to do some digging, as I had never even heard of the guy before I saw that video, and HOLY SHIT, The Great Antonio was certifiably insane. First of all, this wasn't even his first incident in Japan. He went off script on Rikkidozan a decade earlier, and got his ass handed to him just as bad. Dozans' yakuza buddies kicked his ass afterwards for good measure. He said he would pull a Boeing 747 down the tarmack, if boeing gave him his own 747 for personal use. He never learned to read. If you wanted to get a hold of him, the only way to do so was to call a dunkin donuts in rosemont that he frequented, and leave a message. He carried around trash bags full of newspaper clippings and articles about himself. He believed he was decended from extraterrestrials. He handed out brochures at the subway station that detailed his life story. My favorite. He pulled buses a lot as a feat of strength. But one time, he decided to just throw a chain on a bus full of people that was making a stop in its route, and start pulling it, likely terrifying everyone on board. When the cops showed up they only watched, because fuck that dude is pulling a god damn bus. He died alone in a grocery store in 2003. A sad end for a truly great crazy person. |

Basically Inoki beat the shit out of a real life Lennie from Of Mice and Men
I’d like to think while Inoki was stomping Antonio’s head Antonio is saying “Tell me about the rabbits, other Antonio” |

I'm confused about the Rosmont factoid in the OP. I'm quite sure he was from Montreal and died near there. In his last years he was essentially a "street person" and likely had major mental health issues. I read a particularly detailed article on him once, can't remember if it was a local Obituary or perhaps Meltzer's.
Either way he was likely quite insane. It's a crazy thing that a guy can get consistent work in Japan while living in a small Canadian town. I wish I remembered more about him but I think his Japanese matches that totally fell apart are his most memorable wrestling stories. I think he's go around his town pulling vehicles and large wheeled objects with his teeth. |

Also about the Inoki incident. He was brought in for the sole purpose of putting Inoki over. When he refused to sell for the star of NJPW, he got his fucking ass beat. He gave no respect to Inoki and totally paid for it. Not saying it was the right thing for Inoki to do but that was the way the business worked back then and clearly Inoki was enough of a shooter/bad ass to fuck up someone who didn't want to work.

Upon rewatching and focusing on every move you can see Antonio is difficult from the beginning. It's not just the no selling of the dropkick from Inoki but he clearly is trying to apply a shoot headlock from the get go and unwilling to work. When it goes to shit is where Antonio starts smashing the back of Inoki's head and neck with his forearm and then Inoki goes full shoot and grounds him and kicks him to oblivion.

Bill Burr used to have a clip on YouTube of him laughing at this.
It’s gone now. |
