After Life
Is anybody going to watch this?
I hadn't heard anything about it but I knew Ricky Gervais had a new show so I'm watching it now. The first episode was that trademark blend of brash observational humour based around social interaction/convention with a double edge of pathos running down the other ride. I like it a lot so far. Ricky Gervais is a brilliant sitcom maker. Quote:

Lots of great jokes in this. It's very well constructed.

Overall a very funny, dark sitcom about a bloke who becomes a complete cunt in order to deal with his grief.
There is one major issue with it which occurs in a later episode, I think 4, and it is never really re-addressed in a way which absolves or explains the act itself. I'm no shrinking violet but for a show that was treading a very fine line between heartwarming and heartbreaking I needed a fucking good answer for what happened there and was given absolutely nothing. On the whole it maintained a high laugh ratio and a great quality of laugh. Ricky Gervais has excellent comedic timing and an unequalled grasp of emotionally stimulating comedy. I think this is the first programme he has done that excludes his patented cringe comedy and builds towards more visceral, hard edged material juxtaposed with the familiar and exceptionally moving scenes he sets up. It's nothing like The Office or Extras and there is an obvious intent with the way it is done but it's nothing short of beautiful in many parts. |

Binged it last night and enjoyed it. There were parts where I wondered if you’d even call it a comedy.

Yeah... it was extremely blunt. In fact some of it was a little overplayed but I did think I terms of laughs and writing quality that it was much more than a lot of people will make of it.
I think it's Ricky Gervais saying "I'm nearly 60 and I'm scared of death but look at how much fucking fun life can be if you let it". |
