Andre is a legend. Sgt Slaughter is not.

Andre was never a great wrestler per se but he didn't need to be - he was a true spectacle and got eyes on the product with his presence alone.
Slaughter wasn't anything special and just rode the wave of a bland patriotic gimmick. |

Thats not true at all.
In 84 when Hogan won his 1st title the WWF wa split into 2 tours. One headlined by Hogan and the other by Sluaghter. Slaughter's tour drew bigger than Hogans. Fed put the marketing machine behind Hogan + plus the Rocky 3 exposure but Slaughter was a huge deal and is a HoF'er for a reason. Dont throw Slaughter into the trash just because you dont know the history though... |

As big of a legend as Andre is, I had to go with Sgt. Slaughter.
His Authority figure role during the attitude era, The Bootcamp match vs Bob Backlund, his feuds with Pat Patterson, Hogan and more. Wish he would've had more title reigns. |

Damn. Andre might be a HOFer right off the bat.
Slaughter is probably gonna be underrated a lot in this thread. Andre wins though. |

Andre wasn't a great wrestler in the last stage of his career. Before that he was quite good.

Andre was better in Princess Bride than Sgt Slaughter was in GI Joe.

If you haven't seen Slaughter pre-83 please do. You'll see THE best bumping big man in the history of wrestling. Slaughter was that good.

Andre WAS a great wrestler in his younger days, and I dunno I watched Patterson vs Slaughter in that street fight and it would suggest he was a great worker.

I think Slaughter was great. Probably another guy like Dibiase who had the spotlight as he was already ageing, so his years in WWE were on the comedown from his peak. Andre is arguably the same though.
What seperates them is Andre's almost mystical presence and draw. He was a spectacle and continued to be even when he was immobile and offered little else. He was a true icon of the business for me and Slaughter just falls short of that for me. |

There were two wrestlers that I'm afraid would come up and people wouldn't be aware of their peak and only seen their later years: Slaughter and Don Muraco

Given the number of people who think titles = better on this board id be leary of Muraco unless he was up against a Tito Santana esqu guy. Just would not be TPWW friendly. Slaughter has a major WM match and a title riegn under him. Only reason he has ANY credibility on this board.

In fairness it's difficult cuz most of us are born 1985 and beyond. I was born in 87 and started watching when I was like 3. I can catch up on a lot of guys but it's hard to bone up on everyone.
And yeah, you put Slaughter vs Bret Hart, I'm going Bret Hart every time, because he was MY guy. Same for Slaughter v Scott Hall. Not because of belts= better... just Scott Hall is one of the legends I grew up with. |

Andre drew wherever he went. He was the main attraction whose tales are legendary in and out of the ring.

I've not seen enough of the early Slaughter stuff. I've heard his heel work prior to his most widely known run was glorious stuff. I can't even imagine it, because the Slaughter I've seen is so fucking hokey, and frankly, embarrassing.
I should have educated myself more before voting, but since this is against Andre, I'm still going with the Giant himself. Simply because Andre is that much of an important figure in wrestling. He's in a league where I'd only really struggle with other A1 icons against him. Andre was also a great wrestler prior to his broken down years with the WWF that people judge him retroactively by. |

What I've seen of the two, I went with Slaughter, though to be fair both are before my time and I don't really care about either.

I don't discount that early Slaughter could've been great, I'd love some recommendations. But I've only ever seen him as a joke in anything I've seen him in over a long period of watching wrestling. Andre on the other hand just oozes legend and gets you to invest in everything he does. |

This one was a little bit tougher than André's previous rounds, but still went with him. Overall, once again, I feel he has the more impressive body of work. Sarge was great, but I feel like the whole stupid "Iraqi Sympathizer" heel turn and gimmick really ruined the rest of his career.

Andre and mainly due to his legacy.
Saw more of Slaughter's stuff but like with Andre, majority of his best stuff was before I started watching or remember for wrestling. Same for Slaughter being better in the ring since by the time I started watching, Andre was very limited for in-ring skills. Think as a kid I favored Hacksaw Jim Duggan a lot more as the USA Patriot type guy and liked Slaughter mainly because of G.I. Joe. |
