I did warm up to Chris Benoit really fast. Before I had my smark pants on. I didn't like the personalities I perceived as being loud and obnoxious out the gate. I have no clue why I was watching wrestling. Anyway, Chris Jericho reminded me of a kid in school who thought he was so cool cracking a lame joke in the middle of school. I kind of wanted Benoit to kick his ass, because he seemed like a serious guy.

Then Benoit turned face and had that feud with Kurt Angle and rose up the ranks to do some exciting stuff with Austin and Triple H, and ended up aligned with Jericho. I'm just kind of putting this all into perspective now, because I've never really thought about it on these terms, which is why simple questions like these can be so effective. But yeah, I was more relieved to find out that Benoit was an internet favorite, rather than the internet making him a favorite of mine.

Never liked The Rock for the same reasons as Jericho, haha. Always preferred Austin over him. Was cheering that heel turn so hard, because that dumb Rock got obliterated.

Yeah, but I do feel that Rock portrayed a heel character much better in that even in his "Hollywood" phase towards the end of his time as a full-time guy, even when crowds would cheer him as a heel, he could just work the mic on them and get his nuclear heat back. It's not every guy that can just use their character to influence crowds like that. He was a real 1 in a million guy.

Oh, objectively now I can admit The Rock is fucking awesome. The dude is a god. I didn't realize how good we had it as wrestling fans to have someone that charismatic let us come to his show. It was just me as a weird kid kind of having this weird aversion to charisma, as odd as that sounds. I liked more stoic forms of it, anyway.

I can relate. Got to appreciate him more over the past few yrs though I was often entertained by him during the Attitude Era.

This post grew / evolved / metastasized to the point where I've included footnotes.

I did not see any pro wrestlers on TV until I was 8 years old (autumn 1992), but I did see some action figures[1] at Toys'R'Us[2] in prior years.

With that said, I'll justify my 5 favorites by providing a reason after each:

1) Hulk Hogan
-The best blue-sky optimist who could always deliver on his boasts. Hogan made it happen. Then, I found-out pro wrestling is rigged![3]

2) Randy Savage
-"The Slim Jim guy," more-associated-with the brand than other wrestlers who appeared in the commercials, such as Warrior and Edge.

3) Sgt. Slaughter
-"The G.I. Joe guy," and I didn't know about his 1991 heel run until I surfed the Internet during the Attitude Era.

4) "Million-Dollar Man" Ted Dibiase
-He was ostensibly a heel, but in my childhood I had believed, "Having more money means you're a better person! G_d loves you more."[4]
-Also, I legitimately thought he was Richie Rich's dad; and because Richie was a babyface, how bad could his father be?

5) "Not the Mountie," Jacques Rougeau
-Big Bossman was too serious for me; whereas, I enjoyed the goofy antics of the Mountie.
-Jacques had that "Dudley Do-Right" vibe, despite being a heel.
-I didn't watch wrestling until after he ended his singles run as the Mountie, but I caught the tail-end of his second WWF tag team, The Quebecers. But The Q's didn't have the full uniform or the Tazer that the Mountie did, so they weren't in my top quintet.

Conversely: Noticeably absent are Sting, Warrior, and the Road Warriors, because wrestlers with painted faces -scared- me![5]

-Footnotes-
[1] I thought WWE was "too grown-up" because it wasn't a cartoon, beyond Hulk Hogan's Rock'n'Wrestling. Whoever joked about putting Smackdown Live on The Cartoon Network actually had a great idea for introducing more elementary schoolers to WWE programming.

[2] May that money-pit RIP! It was the bane to many parents' pocketbooks.

[3] Just like my job search and the federal elections. Perhaps, also the state elections. Local elections might be not-quite "rigged," but they are entirely dependent upon how much "social capital" -- respect within the community -- you've accrued over the years.

[4] I have since abandoned this aristocratic notion of the "Prosperity" Gospel, in-favor-of the "Help the Needy" Gospel.

[5] This shows another side to Kevin Sullivan's genius, in-that he knew children would be scared by his painted face, so-long-as he avoided bright colors that would be too clownish. But this is an after-the-fact comparison, seeing how I didn't know who Sullivan was until I watched Hogan-era WCW.

1:Legion of Doom (counting them as 1, they were basically a package) - I didn't know who the Road Warriors were, it wasn't until a while later that I was wised up to their earlier work. These guys were on the level of superheroes to me, they were giants, invincible motherfuckers who bullied the bullies & stood for what was right.

2:Hacksaw Jim Duggan - I would annoy my family constantly by yelling HOOOOOOO! & doing the thumbsup

3:Mr. Perfect - he was like the Final Boss of the WWF, a face wasn't anybody unless they had beaten Mr. Perfect.

4:The Barbarian - I don't know why I was such a mark for him, his "look", the combination of the animal fur & antlers & Bobby Heenan putting him over on commentary cemented him as a dangerous guy you didn't want to mess with. I was big into He-Man, & he looked like a he-man action figure

5:Macho Man Randy Savage - I broke my mom's bed doing the Macho Elbowdrop while watching WWF Superstars. Bricks were shat, it was not a good day, it was worth it.
