The change doesn't bother me. The shit writing really bothers me.

Capaldi is a great actor and gave the role everything, but there's very few memorable moments/episodes from his tenure due to the writing. Are they just stuck trying to find something original to do after 900+ episodes?

Clara really hurt the show for me. She was positioned as the lead character and the most important person to ever exist in the Whoniverse. When you give a character that much importance, while also making them tediously annoying and introduce a love interest with the personality of a paper bag, the show is always going to suffer, regardless of who was playing The Doctor.
