If you go back to the original trilogy, while from an economic point of view it could be seen as being a very positive view of a socialist universe, the way Government is portrayed (self interested, self serving, inept) wouldn't exactly be how someone advocating big state politics would be pushing. Particularly as there seems to be little democratic element and a military structure which seems indistinguishable from the executive branch of Government.

I suppose you could view it as pushing a more anarchistic line that no government can represent the best interests of communities and only by working together can they reach mutually beneficial aims (certainly would fit in with the narrative) but suspect it might be a story telling device rather than a stance on political theory.
