Think about it, this was during a time when crowds for the most part just sat on their hands and did fuck all unless it was saying "What". These fans actually reacted to stuff, and not in a way just to get themselves over, but more as a celebration of the whole mania experience. Of course, once they became self aware and WWE started marketing it, it started to stink.
It existed in a bubble of time because people were still around and the product was bad. People aren't going to hang around for bad shit for long, and that they kept the bad shit and thought the crowd was going to stick around is a problem. That's why they all suck and seem like they are "trying."
