It would also explain why Hart's heart (lol) was never really in the stuff he did in WCW. Sure, they didn't use him very well, but he seemed a shadow of the guy WWF had. It's almost like he was happy to semi-retire on a massive guaranteed contract.
There is also the fact that even when telling "the truth", HBK's and Hart's accounts, as well as others, are never consistent. Probably kept a blur of misinformation on purpose.
