I think quite the opposite is true. Doom is a breath of fresh air in that it is a throwback to old school FPS games that are more arcadelike with fast movement, smaller maps and fast action as opposed to modern shooters with enormous maps and slow gameplay like Battlefield. The only bad thing I can say about it's multiplayer is that it added a layout system like in modern games instead of having weapon pickups like in Quake Live. Other then that I think its a very unique game these days.
