I suppose its a form of gambling, but not necessarily on the level of actual casino level gambling based on the simple fact that you're guaranteed to get SOMETHING for your money.

That being said, loot boxes are very much guilty of playing the to pride of the individual who lands something rare. Buying cosmetics are cool, but the randomness of the boxes and getting something rare definitely boosts ones ego.
