Or they see better things about a certain episode and try to show it off as a showcase of what the series is going to be.

Fox did that with Firefly. They showed "The Train Job" (Shows 2nd episode) first over the pilot episode. The episode was more action because it featured a train chase and stagecoach thievery. It was a perfect example of what the show was going to be Sci/Fi-Western-Action-Drama-Comedy.

The Pilot didn't even air until December.

Ultimatley it was a mistake even though it probably was done with good intentions. Firefly's pilot was essential.
