Star Wars: The Force Awakens managed to break the all-time record for highest grossing domestic film in the US. Toppled the previous record holder, Avatar, by around $176 million.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens has officially ended its theatrical run. The movie has now finished playing theaters, and is secure in its place as the most successful film ever released in North America.

As Collider reports, the film leaves cinemas with a box office total of $936.6 million, way ahead of its nearest rival, 2009's Avatar. The James Cameron sci-fi epic took $760.5 million.
In terms of all-time worldwide record, it managed to be 3rd and missed out toppling Titantic for the #2 spot by around $118 million.

Quote:
JJ Abrams' Star Wars film wasn't able to beat Titanic's still-amazing take of $2.186 billion, while Avatar's $2.788 billion total puts it way out in front as the all-time number one. The Force Awakens earned $2.068 billion worldwide.
