I had no issue with MJ either, besides her name is Michelle, not Mary Jane so she's technically not the same character.
They should have just not called that kid Flash or whatever since I don't think he was a jock at all and the only thing he had in common with the character from the comic book (that I know of) is that he hated on Peter.
