It wasn't just liking it ironically just to go against the grain... the gimmick also had an advantage of being both an intentionally laughable trainwreck AND the most entertaining shit in TNA compared to what the company was doing themselves.
I'm hoping Jeff does return to being Brother Nero in original context, where he actually changed up his moves and was more like Matt's heavy/lackey, but I'm sure that even if he was, he'd be back to shirts off and jumping off shit inside two or three matches.
I also hope that they teleport/time travel (which was a thing in #broken canon - it's how they vacated their TNA titles and ended up being able to challenge The Bucks of Youth) and end up in SRW to challenge for the Tag Titles in the 80's so that they can continue their pursuit to become the greatest tag champions in all of space and time.
