I think viewing him as soft is the cry of the virgin basement dweller, personally. His journey was finding a way to blend his new found sentimentality with the proficiency of his old self which happened in the final ep (and was constantly hinted at in his over reliance on the Barca tank). Where there was a failure was fleshing out the inner workings that established him as a Michael Corleone. All glanced over and suggested instead of showing his ability to strategize. When it came time to show the evolution, it was just an action-filled clusterfuck.

Anyways, shows are allowed to not be perfect and come up short and still be enjoyable for what they are.
