Trent Barreta
You nailed it.

You're right, I was referencing the FIP World Heavyweight Championship and not the WWE United States Championship.

Trent Barreta scored a huge upset against Drew McIntyre when he rolled him up as Drew was looking to toss Barreta to the outside. This was made out to be a huge upset.

Trent's finishing move is the Gobstopper, which is the Busaiku Knee which Daniel Bryan has also adapted into the Knee Plus. A Gobstopper is also a type of candy treat (sweet).

By changing the spelling of his name, he gets to keep using it on the independent circuit, sidestepping any (if there are any) trademark infringements he may be stepping on.

Trent Barreta and Caylen Croft were The Dudebusters (that was my dodgy 80's comedy reference, and "Croft" was linked to the 90's video game character, Lara Croft from Tomb Raider), but Croft was released whilst Barreta stayed on the roster as a singles act. After leaving the WWE, Barreta would form a team with Chuck Taylor (who shares his name with a type of shoe) called "Best Friends."

Trent Barreta worked tryout matches for the WWE under the ring name "Greg Cardona," the surname of which is the real name of WWE Superstar, Zack Ryder, who trained in the same facility as Barreta.
