Rate the last album(s) you listened to

In the same "vein" as the rate the last movie thread.

Also maybe even post your favorite track from the album.

Go for it.

Girls - Album (7.5/10)
Really liking this. Have listened to it twice in a row so far and listening a third time now. "Lo-fi" with kind of a "surreal" sound to it. Pretty great.

Santigold - Santogold - 7.5/10

Had the album for ages but only got it for one or two songs. Listened to it all the way through yesterday for the first time. Pleasantly suprised. Good album.

those god damn pimps - quickly now gentlemen, with a lively step

6.5/10

straight up rock and roll coming out of rockford, illinois. just saw them play on saturday night and picked up this, their newest effort. it's pretty straight forward, but they bring it hard. i can see getting sick of it after awhile as it will end up all sounding the same. love the guy's voice, though. my favorite track is probably "a gentleman's wager." i'm at work rigth now otherwise i'd check and see if they have stuff up on youtube. they probably do.

Converge - Axe to fall

8.5/10

Pretty damn tasty. Nothing much from the metal scene these days does anything for me, so it is good to find something that does.

Paloma Faith - Do You Want The Truth, Or Something Beautiful - 8/10.

As a few of you might have picked up over time, I listen to alsorts. Someone suggested to me that I might see the merit in this record, and they really weren't wrong.

It isn't even something that I would usually be into, but Paloma is so charismatic and compelling with her look and vocal, it is hard not to appreciate her on first impression. After that, you start to unfold her lyrics and music. She siings about relavance in her life and tends to be in a similar vein to someone like Lily Allen, but far more elequant and traditional in it's prose. Her vocal is like Etta James, steeped in the traditions of 50's female Jazz vocalists. And the music is just classic pop construction, with Jazz influenced melodies. I merely dream of being able to write pop songs as good as this.

My only critizism of the album is how it's produced. It can sound quite manufactured, particulally the drum sounds used. Which I can understand for the market it's aimed at, but they could have gotten a better, more live sounding sound from it. If you listen to her live, it blows the record out of the water in my opinion. I also think the mixing levels are pretty poor in places. The shame of it is that she is trying to be a truely credible pop musician, and to be let down by production is almost going to alienate the audience she wouldn't have if she was a more mainstream popista.

Stone Cold Sober is a great song, but this one is my favourite. The marketing and promotion must have been fucking woeful because this had a pretty poor showing in the charts, and for me it's as good as anything the pop world has ever produced. If I had finished writing this song on a guitar, and ran through it the final time, I would be 100% convinced I had just written a number 1.

But then, promoting a 'credible pop star' is a fine line when not trying to send a distorted message to the audience.

One Life Crew - Is What It Is 10/10

Cleveland's own One Life Crew. The most misunderstood Hardcore band ever. Their whole discography, 53 tracks, on one album. A must have if you are into 90's hardcore.

You can get the CD for $5. You can't go wrong.

Dappled Cities - Zounds

8.5/10

Gorgeous sunny indie pop, stylishly executed and lots of fun to listen to. It's a little bit latter-day Piebald-ish. Very 'All Ears, All Eyes...' era. Excellent live show too, at that.

Genuinely well-crafted album. Nice flow, interesting melodies, funky as hell, big sing-along value, plus some good baby-makin' tunes. Aww, shit.

So underrated and rather unknown everywhere but Canada, yet he shouldnt be. It's gonna be tough to out-do "Avalanche".

Yes it is. Since the band broke up after the "Audio of being" album, he's gone on to record three other albums. "Avalanche", "Hospital Music" and now very recently "Vancouver".
His stuff is all over itunes and everything, but you should definitely check everything else out.

I've been slowly going through their albums, and they are pretty good all round.

Yes, true. I even have the album, for whatever reason forgot it.

Kapoutman 11-04-2009 10:19 PM

Here are the albums I got lately:

IAM - 20

A legendary French rap group which decided to have a live concert in front of the pyramids of Gizeh for their 20th anniversary. All their hits rearranged with an orchestra, some arab instruments and singers, etc. One of the best live albums I have heard.
10/10

Sage Francis - Sick of Wasting

His latest album of rarities, collaborations and b-sides. There are a couple of good tracks, particularly "SFR Pays Dues". This one is definitely the best from the album. Some of the older stuff and some of the radio appearances either sound cheap or isn't that good at all. Still, more good than bad, as usual.
7/10

Flight of the Conchords - I Told You I Was Freaky

Their second album is not as good as the first one. There are 5 songs I would listen to regularly, the others are either too far from their folk roots musically or not funny enough. Still, "Hurt Feelings", "You Don't Have To Be A Prostitute" and "Angels" are worth listening to.

I will for sure do that. That album is, in my opinion, what rock should be.

Last album I listened to was The Pains of Being Pure of Heart- ST. This sounds like a combination of The Smiths meet some 1990's dreampop, a lot less mopey than Morrissey lyrics though.

Best song would be "The Tenure Itch."

muffalufagus 11-06-2009 01:43 PM

Sloan - Between The Bridges

10/10. One of the best albums I've ever heard.

Zen v.W.o. 11-08-2009 01:10 PM

Nirvana- Live at Reading 92 (DVD and CD version)

First of all, it's about time this epic performance came about, in such high quality. One of the most memorable live shows of it's time, and the moment Nirvana sort of was at their peak...or very close to it.
The dvd obviously doesnt edit out anything..no time constraints. The CD does edit out most of the talking and joking, all that banter, but the songs are kickass so whatever. If you ever liked Nirvana and/or just love great live shows, this is pretty essential.

A sleepy little album filled with acoustics and harmony.

Last one I listened to all the way through?

From the Cradle to the Brave - Highland Glory 10/10 My favourite album
Top track - From the Cradle to the Brave, closely followed by the Land of Forgotten Dreams part 1. Wear Your Guns to Neverland is also extremely good thinking about it.
