Legion

Anyone watching this show? First couple of episodes have been awesome. Didn't really know what to expect because although it is a Noah Hawley project it is still apparently tied to the X-Men movie universe (albeit a parallel Earth I am pretty sure) and that's been hit and miss over the years.

Was also concerned about how, since Legion is a character built around split personalities, that was gonna come off on screen, especially given the controversy over that McAvoy/Shyamalan film recently. But the general depiction of mental illness has been incredibly nuanced.

Needn't have worried at all really, it's a brilliantly written and presented show. Aubrey Plaza is really good in it and feels "noteworthy" but the whole ensemble is. Really like the guy who plays David, and it's nice to see some Fargo alum pop up again in another Hawley piece. Be interested to see if Legion is the only comics character to feature though; pretty sure the others have been created for the show.

Anyway yeah I guess use this space to discuss Legion if you're feeling so inclined.

Show is excellent. Im really looking forward to Wednesdays right now so I can see the next. Completely hooked on this.

Lock Jaw 02-21-2017 07:46 PM

Finally just watched the second episode. I couldn't even tell you why I enjoy this show, but I do. Feels very surreal, and I still don't know if any of it is actually happening or not.......

ClockShot 02-21-2017 08:34 PM

While it is Marvel/FX joint-op, Hawley's plan is to make this show it's own little world. No involvement from other know characters........yet. No ties to movies, no super crossover with Agents of SHIELD, etc.

It's an adult show. And I'm liking it.

SPOILER: show
There are whispers Professsor X may drop in as daddy.

Lock Jaw 02-23-2017 10:09 PM

Just watched yesterday's episode...... damn, that demon with the yellow eyes is creepy as f........

mitchables 02-27-2017 06:34 PM

Few days late but I also just watched episode three last night. Yeah, giant demon is heaps unsettling. After the events of the episode -- especially the closing moment where he's being screamed at by a million people in his head -- do we think Lenny might actually be one of David's personalities? I know it seems like other people have interacted with her/people mentioned her being infused with the wall after the original body-switch incident, but it kiiiinda fits, especially given how unreliable a narrator the show is establishing him as. Not sure what the deal with the World's Angriest Boy in the World (such a weird book title) and the 'demon' are though; thought maybe the 'demon' could have also been a mutant whose psyche (thus powers) David had absorbed at some stage.

Fucking loving this show though. I dig the CW-DC stuff, especially as it's so 'comic-booky' these days, and Marvel's Netflix shows, but I don't give a shit about Agents of SHIELD really so this is a nice change of pace. Kinda good.

I get the feeling the missing husband isn't dead though, but probably lost in some alternative universe or quantum space or some such for sure. Melanie didn't really look like she was confirming it when they asked if he was dead.

Lock Jaw 02-27-2017 06:46 PM

For whatever reason I get the feeling like Lenny was "real" in the mental hospital, and then for whatever reason now after her death, he is seeing her, and also putting her into memories.......

I dunno...... could be totally off.......

Destor 02-27-2017 06:55 PM

He was in proximity to her at the time of death so he absorbed her consciousness. She now exists in his mind. She she is both dead and alive...though she may not yet be aware of either.

Schrodinger's friend.

mitchables 02-27-2017 07:11 PM

@ Lock Jaw: So you think he didn't actually know her before Clockworks? I think that's entirely plausible (if she's real) and actually strengthens both theories to be honest: if she actually existed, it seems unlikely she would have known him before the hospital AND ended up committed alongside him. Plus there was that flicker in his memory of her dancing with him and cooking on the stove at the same time under the bridge or whatever. Pretty strong take tbh.

If she's part of his psyche, it would explain why she was alongside him for so long prior to her 'death' -- and the interaction with other people COULD be explained away if he was able to physically manifest that aspect of his personality.

I mean, she's definitely just in his head now - but it'll be interesting to see if she ever was more than that.

mitchables 02-27-2017 07:12 PM

@ Destor, Let me clarify: there is no doubt in my mind that, right now, she solely exists inside David's mind. That much is crystal clear, I think. My question is whether she actually ever really existed at all in the sense that we're all being led to believe she did.

Blonde Moment 02-27-2017 07:35 PM

Hell, how much of anything we have seen is actually "real"? I mean even his sister seems oddly dated to me.

I fully expect for the season finale to be a total mindfuck and am lookin forward to it.

Im saying absolutely yes she did. Upon death he absorbed her. He doesnt know, but im notnsure she knows either.

Wardrobe of everybody in the show seems "dated", think it is just the "style" of the show......

Ooh right, makes sense -- and with respect to what Lock Jaw was saying, do you think it's possible he's inserting her (or she's inserting herself) into memories that she wasn't really a part of? Like the more I think on it, the more LJ seems to be onto something with them having only actually met during their time at Clockworks. Again, seems weird they'd have both ended up in the same hospital at the same time, unless I guess they were jointly committed because of something they did together.

I know there's basically zero point in theorising like this because we'll inevitably get the answers we're looking for, so stop me if it's getting annoying. I just find it fun and interesting. :$

Lock Jaw 02-27-2017 09:32 PM

Dunno, I'm probably way off and the simplest answer of being commited at the same time is right.

Destor 02-27-2017 09:59 PM

Im with you on her interjecting herself into other parts of his mind. She is a resident there now. As they both come to terms with her existence i think she will expand into his mind, and later others. At some point he, and by extension us, will lose sight of who he really is. Where does she behin and he end. What is self.

"We are Legion,, we are many."

Lock Jaw 02-28-2017 12:31 AM

Hey man, as long as Aubrey Plaza keeps getting to be on the show, despite dying in the first episode, I'm all good with that.

Destor 02-28-2017 12:36 AM

She's always a highlight pf anything she does

Destor 03-01-2017 11:06 PM

They overtly started a subplot of the duplicitist self tonight.

Lock Jaw 03-02-2017 12:06 AM

Damn, this is a great show. I get so sucked in that I kind of forget I am watching a TV show and then a commercial will hit and I'll be like "What?! DAMMIT!"

Lock Jaw 03-02-2017 12:14 AM

Y'all think that maybe David is "possessed" by "classic" X-villain "The Shadow King"? Trying to use David to "escape into the real world".....

Blonde Moment 03-02-2017 03:18 AM

Was wondering about that demon actually being him

mitchables 03-05-2017 05:45 PM

Still haven't seen episode four because my life is a wreck but I'm keen to sit down and watch it and catch up soon and join the speculation about the Shadow King, because that kinda makes a whole lot of sense.

mitchables 03-07-2017 04:50 PM

Caught up last night - definitely getting heavy Shadow King vibes. Might be a swerve but it seems v plausible that the 'parasite' is the Shadow King trying to use David's power to break through to the real world, and is infecting/partially controlling his memories (i.e. what's happening to Lenny in his head).

Think that episode - if any of what we saw is to be trusted, who even fkn knows with this show - serves as pretty solid indicator that Lock Jaw was right in his assumption: that David didn't know Lenny before the institution, and his mind is now implanting her, either voluntarily or otherwise, into memories that she was not originally a part of. And his current mental perception of her is being twisted by whatever is infecting him. Shadow King using someone he trusted to get him to do things that make him realise his own power.

Fact the dog's name is "King" and never existed might also be a red herring but yeah YOU GUYS ARE PROBABLY ONTO SOMETHING HERE.

PS Kerry/Cary :'(

The preview for the next episode was weird though.....

SPOILER: show

Lock Jaw 03-16-2017 12:17 AM

BTW, show was officially picked up for a season 2.

Lock Jaw 03-23-2017 12:17 AM
