Seen it yesterday, I liked it and Gal Gadot is great as Wonder Woman.

Ruien 06-17-2017 11:03 PM

Hell ya. Amazing movie.

Apparently DC dodged a huge bullet by switching directors for the film. Original director and script would have made the film really terrible and sexist. Would have been an easy contender for worst ever comic film.

Quote:

Joss Whedon‘s unproduced Wonder Woman screenplay leaked online last month, appearing on sites like Comicbook.com and Screenrant. Due to Whedon’s vocal love of Wonder Woman, many fans viewed it as a tantalizing Hollywood “what if” story. But for some reason, few people mentioned how catastrophically, awe-inspiringly terrible the screenplay actually is.

The script resurfaced on Twitter last night, this time being heavily criticized by female Wonder Woman fans. It’s easy to see why, because this thing is so sexist it’s hard to believe Whedon wrote and submitted it on a professional basis. Constantly sexualizing and demeaning its lead character, it’s like an evil mirror universe version of the movie we eventually got.
Quote:

The screenplay displays a toxic attitude to Diana, with characters calling her a “bitch” or a “whore,” and commenting on her skimpy costume. Instead of being a feminist paradise, Themyscira is plagued by infighting and a lack of empathy for outsiders, and Diana even fights her own mother. Then there’s Steve Trevor, who overshadows Diana’s role from page one.
Quote:

Steve Trevor spends the entire movie mansplaining to Diana, arguing and criticizing her brand of heroism. It’s a startling contrast with Allan Heinberg and Patty Jenkins’ depiction in the real movie, where Steve supports Diana, and the two characters enjoy each other’s company.

Ruien 06-18-2017 09:30 AM

That would have killed the DC movie universe.

drave 06-18-2017 10:25 AM

Whedon has always sexualized his female leads though..... not a surprise.

Destor 06-18-2017 11:57 AM

Id have to read that before i believed that tbh

Sixx 06-18-2017 12:02 PM

This is weird, I always considered Whedon to be a good filmmaker.

No idea why he'd want to go with such thing.

Damian Rey 2.0 06-18-2017 09:53 PM

Yeah I'd need some sort of concrete proof to buy that. If it was that bad, why would wb give him batgirl?

Emperor Smeat 06-19-2017 02:17 PM

The link contains portions of the script he was working on at the time although to be fair a bit, the script itself is from over a decade ago. He was working on a Batman script during the same time that also got rejected/ignored for Batman Begins instead.

Either his vision for comic films changed a lot during the past decade or the script for Batgirl isn't character-destroying terrible which is why Warner Bros is comfortable with it.

The Rogerer 06-21-2017 06:22 PM

I think this is the best DC movie by far, but I think the film needed more to be great rather than just good. The whole starting section was kinda dopey, and I think you could have ditched a lot of it and had a tighter film. The dramatic loops didn't really tie up, and I suppose you have a Wonder Woman character who will be dramatically different in other stories than this one. I don't think she needed to be quite so much of a naive idiot. Still, a big improvement on the two messy Superman films.

slik 08-06-2017 12:51 PM

Wonder Woman is 4 million away from knocking off Spider-Man (2002) for most highest grossing (Domestic) superhero flick of all-time. The movie made 3 million this weekend so by this time next week it is likely to have happened.

Is it still on wide release in the States? The 2 biggest chains only have it playing in 2 theatres (both in London) here.

Destor 08-06-2017 01:32 PM

Nah, its been out of market for a good while

Lock Jaw 08-06-2017 03:57 PM

Still playing in one of the major theaters here..... one of the two.

I keep reading this as "quit playing games with my heart" just because I want to.

Ruien 08-07-2017 05:21 PM

Gal Gadot is in for such a huge pay day with the next film.

Women only Wonder Woman screenings turn out to be illegal:

Women power!

Kalyx triaD 08-09-2017 09:10 PM

OH ARE THEY

WOOOOOOW

Kalyx triaD 08-09-2017 09:11 PM

Idiots. Hope they get hit up like an atm.

Lock Jaw 08-09-2017 09:19 PM

Anyone willing to sue them over it is just desperate for attention and also hoping that they will get something good.

Basically the same type of people who have made it so that we now need "obvious" warnings on things like "Caution: Hot" on hot beverages........

Ruien 08-09-2017 10:05 PM

Yes. Discriminating against a sex is the same thing.

Lock Jaw 08-09-2017 10:10 PM

It is in this case. A small inconsequential thing that no one should get bent out of shape over.

This is the last I'll say on the matter as I am not looking to reignite this debate, in which I believe only slik and I were on the right side.

Ruien 08-09-2017 10:12 PM

Didn't know it was okay to only let certain people attend an event. Good deal.

*criminal side

Kalyx triaD 08-09-2017 11:55 PM

Lock Jaw your response to this potential lawsuit simply would not exist in reverse. There is a case and it would be an easy win. Talking about how many men were leading comic movies is not even close to a viable legal defense. Somebody's getting a payday.

And again; the actual event is benign. But the principle, the inconsistencies, must be put on notice to prevent discriminate precedents set in the future. If it wouldn't fly for one race or gender, then it doesn't fly at all. Ever.

And best they get message across before they try this shit with Black Panther.

Amazing.

slik 08-14-2017 12:17 PM

Wonder Woman 1.5 million away from being the highest grossing origin pic.

Destor 08-14-2017 12:31 PM

Adjusting for inflation 1978s Sperman is by a wide margin ($1,789,662,782 [most succesful super hero film of all time {origin or not} for those playing at home.]) 2000's Spider-Man and 2008's Iron Man also beat it.

Destor 08-14-2017 12:32 PM

Just so all the facts are there.

Ruien 08-14-2017 01:34 PM

Destor is such a male pig.

Destor 08-14-2017 01:34 PM

It's true

Kalyx triaD 08-14-2017 03:43 PM

In any case WW debuting on the big screen in a struggling DCEU against a juggernaut of a rival studio did very well and it doesn't need to break records to make a statement for her side.

Destor 08-14-2017 03:45 PM

absolutely

slik 08-18-2017 09:18 AM

Top box-office, when adjusted for inflation, not a single film of the 2000's cracks the top-ten:

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/alltime/adjusted.htm

Destor 08-18-2017 09:29 AM

...and?

Destor 08-18-2017 09:40 AM

Movies were more popular in the past because there was no post theater viewing options....films were events...
