Hope Blade Runner gets best cinematography.

Droford 01-23-2018 10:25 AM

I've seen 6 of the 9 best picture nominees which is crazy. I still want to see the Post.

I think Blade Runner 2049 is one of those films in 20 years people will look back on as a classic (just like the original).

It definitely deserves a win for cinematography.

slik 01-23-2018 10:42 AM

Suicide Squad is technically the most Oscar-nominated DCEU film ever, thus far. That's going to make some people angry.

Big Vic 01-23-2018 11:04 AM

Silence of the Lambs was a horror movie?

slik 01-23-2018 11:07 AM

Definitely. In my opinion horror is the most diverse genre of film that exists. It spans everything from cheap slashers to Let The Right One In. I'd argue Pan's Labrynth is as much a horror film as a fantasy film.

Big Vic 01-23-2018 01:01 PM

I'd classify it as a suspense/thriller.

SlickyTrickyDamon 01-23-2018 01:05 PM

Yeah, so much for WB's supposed big push for Wonder Woman getting some nominations.

Lock Jaw 01-23-2018 01:51 PM

I bet they make Wonder Woman bisexual in the sequel to ensure some Oscar nods.

Destor 01-23-2018 01:55 PM

What would it have been nominated for?

Destor 01-23-2018 01:55 PM

Actor in a supporting role would have been mint though

Lock Jaw 01-23-2018 01:56 PM

I dunno, but I read WB was making a big push for it in various categories, mailing out a lot of screeners and etc.

Destor 01-23-2018 01:57 PM

Score maybe...? if that would have been tokenism at best.

Lock Jaw 01-23-2018 01:58 PM

Destor 01-23-2018 02:02 PM

I hope they didnt put much money into that campaign...

Damian Rey 2.0 01-23-2018 03:09 PM

Glad War for the Planet of the Apes is getting a nod. I honestly believe it was Serkis' best go at Cesar. Wishit'd have gotten more consideration

ClockShot 01-23-2018 03:18 PM

Nominations look right.

I should have known Meryl Streep would lock up another spot for Best Actress, but I think either Sally Hawkins, Frances McDormand, or Saoirse Ronan get it.

Jordan Peele and/or Chris Nolan sneaking in for Best Director is the shocker here. One of those spots should have went to Martin McDonagh for Three Billboards.

Destor 01-23-2018 03:22 PM

Get out will win big for obvious reasons.

Shocked hanks didnt get a nod

Lock Jaw 01-23-2018 03:28 PM

Too lazy to look it up, but was this Jordan Peele's first movie? Pretty good nomination haul.

Destor 01-23-2018 03:31 PM

correct

It's not a straight horror film it's basically a thriller dressed up as one though so i get what you're saying.

The thing is that people have their own definition of horror so some people wont see Get Out as anything more than a mildly spooky comedy or a slightly funny horror or whatever.
People are as right as they want to be.

Seanny One Ball 01-23-2018 03:50 PM

Cheap slashers have never been real horror though. That's why they get called slashers and the only people who are frightened by them have never seen the film, just the VHS cover.

Nolan doesn't belong in the same sentence as these two really. Not this year anyway.

Horror doesn't have to be scary, as scary is subjective.
Horror just has to have horror elements, be it serial killers, body horror, gothic horror, slasher, supernatural, occult, fantasy, etc.

Droford 01-23-2018 05:48 PM

My regal theatre is doing o
All 9 best picture nominees for $35 the last week of February..but they can be seen individual with moviepass so Ill get to see Lady Bird finally..
The only movie I havent seen at that point in theatres is Get out but I saw it on HBO and I haven't seen Call Me By My Name and I don't have any desire watching two guys jizz all over fruit and eat it..sorry

Droford 01-23-2018 06:32 PM

Moviepass #36 The Post 6
Moviepass #34 Phantom Thread 7
Moviepass #29 Shape of Water 7.5
Moviepass #27 Darkest Hour 7
Moviepass #23 3 Billboards 6
Moviepass #2 Dunkirk 6
Get Out 7.5
Haven't seen : Lady Bird and Call me By Your Name

Right now I'd lean Get Out if only because I still have not seen the last 15 minutes of Shape of Water..

Sixx 01-23-2018 09:04 PM

Hmmm, Razzies should give out an honorary Tyler Perry award.

I don't think that's correct at all or we'd consider "Scary Movie" a horror film rather than a mediocre parody.

I suppose that's the danger of trying to see films as genre-specific. On the one hand you can get classics like Silence Of The Lambs and Get Out, on the other you can have pretty much every VHS video nasty from the 80's...they can't all be the same thing but they will all appear on similar lists.

Destor 01-24-2018 02:12 PM

I think horror has more jump scares and thrillers are scary or "intense" situations as opposed to trying to scare the veiwer

Destor 01-24-2018 02:12 PM

The again rosemary's baby is the best horror film of all time imo and it had no jump scares...they are oddly similar generes.

My predictions...

Best Picture - The Shape of Water
Best Actor - Daniel Day Lewis
Best Actress - Fancis McDormand
Best Supporting Actor - Sam Rockwell
Best Supporting Actress - Allison Janney
Best Director - Del Toro for Shape of Water
Best Original Screenplay - Get Out

Destor 01-24-2018 07:43 PM

Not black enough

Jordan 01-26-2018 10:20 AM

True.

Droford 01-26-2018 11:17 AM

Will WWE mention John Cena got nominated by proxy for Ferdinand. Itd be hilarious if that won (it won't) and Cena could be the first Oscar winning (by proxy) WWE star.

Yeah that's exactly what I mean :y:

I think the scariest horror film I have ever seen is The Texas Chainsaw Massacre but I rarely watch horror films and I think I saw that when I was about fifteen.
The original Hellraiser was particularly bizarre and I remember struggling to watch that but I really can't think of a horror film that was so terrifying I had to turn it off.

I don't know if it counts as horror but "Eden Lake" was reprehensible, pointless ugly trash passing for social commentary and I remember distinctly watching that and thinking it was an ugly little Michael Haneke rip-off minus the style and obvious satire on social estrangement and alienation.
That film made me extremely angry and I knew the moment I saw it that some people with limited analytical ability would promote it as a modern class-commentary classic and we'd see rip-offs of the rip-off later on down the road.
Next thing you know I'm looking at "Cherry Tree Lane" which is like some National Front shitebag took the "Eden Lake" script and said "this needs to be racial with some black/white rape and the black people should talk like 'dis innit' so that our white audience know we're all about politics".

Seanny One Ball 01-26-2018 02:43 PM

Oh hang on no i just remembered "Audition".
Yeah I change my mind. Audition was fucking terrifying and I turned that off about eight times before having the courage to complete the ordeal.
