Looks fucking terrible.

Pass.

Ruien 05-13-2015 08:55 PM

Ya, looks pretty bad.

Frank Drebin 05-13-2015 09:02 PM

First part of it looks like she just got done watching the Christopher Reeve Superman and decided to mimic his Clark Kent. She does seem to get better though. Not sure how true to the comics this looks but her boss is certainly cartoonish and lifted right from Devil Wears Prada. No idea how they're going to explain the absence of Superman from the series, and he apparently still uses the USPS to do his shipping.

Wasn't the Supergirl movie a colossal flop back in the day?

Anyway, I haven't gotten into the other comic TV stuff like Arrow and The Flash and I doubt Ill get into this.

Kalyx triaD 05-13-2015 10:34 PM

So I take it we beat the over-stuff forums scare of 2006. lol

Yeah there's a little too much 'girl power' pandering that was really unnecessary and totally off Lifetime. It turns right around and makes female-led superhero projects look like try-hards. And the stupid Lifetime trailer music in the background really dragged it. If they're going to keep pushing the 'girls can be great, too' angle I promise it will turn both genders off.

Saying that, the effects are certainly up to snuff (TV came a long way). I like most the casting. Something about Jimmy just didn't capture the vibe. Superman's pal is a geek, somebody who looks up even to clumsy nerd Clark, this Jimmy seems like he has it all together, not somebody Supes would find a connection with. I agree the boss lady might get annoying by episode 2, but I'm betting she'll be more interesting than a Spacely Sprocket cutout. Supergirl herself is great. Loved the stripperific gag.

I don't think they need to explain why Superman's not around, since this isn't Metropolis and we're over half a decade in of a comic movie-verse where heroes go off on their own and forget each other's cell number. People will get over that. But alas with Superman seemingly established and never a mention of him in the CW-verse, probably best to accept Supergirl doesn't reside in that world either. Shucks.

If this shows wants to ride the wave of the CW-verse, SHIELD, and Gotham; I suggest they tone down the cheesy girl power thing. Even Disney doesn't come off that sappy in their female centric shows. Make her capable as a superheroine, not as a female superhero. The second you make her gender a character point you ironically undermine her character.

But it's a pilot, and SHIELD similarly started off rocky. Here's hoping the Back 13 starts kicking ass, but putting up against Gotham is looking like a huge mistake now.

Lock Jaw 05-14-2015 01:46 AM

Has potential, I guess. I certainly like the fact that it seems that unlike Smallville, we will get to see her fly around and be out in the open etc...

I do find it weird that Superman isn't in it. Like that scene at the end with Jimmy giving Kara Superman's Cape/Baby Blanket. It's like.... What? Come on Supes, you can't even bother to visit your cousin to give her this treasured heirloom? Give her some words of inspiration, etc? Not like you would have to hop on an airplane/train/automobile to pay her a visit....

Destor 05-14-2015 04:24 AM

Inwent into this expecting to hate this (because i read this thread first) and i really liked it. Girl power is good here.

As far as the comments about it going head to head against gotham: things dont really work that way anymore, dvrs snd hulu have seen to that but even still gotham isnt exactly a powerhouse and these arent exactly going after the same audience (but theyre both comic shows!!!111!!! [and still no.])

It had new scenes and such. Perhaps it was leaked?

Nowhere Man 05-14-2015 11:34 PM

I get the feeling that this is gonna be like Agents of SHIELD, where most of the first season sucks balls, but towards the end they start cutting out the stuff that nobody likes and it gets good later on. Once they ditch the rom-com elements and focus more on her doing superhero stuff, it's got potential.

That's a studio thing, I think-- for some reason, WB's decided that DC's TV and movie universes need to be separated, and Batman and Superman specifically aren't going to show up in-costume in any of their TV shows.

Lock Jaw 05-14-2015 11:54 PM

Doesn't mean I can't find it weird.

Nowhere Man 05-14-2015 11:55 PM

Yeah, it's definitely weird and unfortunate-- on the plus side, it at least means that in the TV-verse there's a Superman who probably didn't let about a million people die and then kill a guy with his bare hands on his first day on the job.

Tom Guycott 05-15-2015 12:40 AM

But they have a (off camera) Batman who's considered a dangerous lunatic, so it balances?

As lame and hokey as it looks with the shoehorned "akward girl melodrama" schtick, it is already better than the Supergirl movie was. Low bar, I know.

Kalyx triaD 05-15-2015 12:41 AM

But saying that, I still haven't watched Arrow, Flash or Gotham. Is Flash any good, anyone?

I know, but the way they put him in a no-win scenario like that was still a massive downer. I honestly liked Man of Steel a good bit, and I'm glad they didn't just replicate Marvel's formula, but I feel like they over-corrected on the "let's make Superman more serious" front.

Flash is great, if you don't mind CW cheesiness. Arrow's good too, but feels a little too "Batman with the serial numbers filed off" for me. And Gotham is terrible.

Nark Order 05-15-2015 10:58 AM

They didn't even refer him by name. All the "your cousin" stuff will get boring real quick.

Lock Jaw 05-15-2015 01:45 PM

Take a shot for every reference to "him"/"cousin"/ other indirect references.

Rammsteinmad 05-15-2015 02:16 PM

Whoops forgot to ask. Is this part of the DC Movie Universe? If there is such a thing...

Lock Jaw 05-15-2015 02:36 PM

There is such a thing, but no, it is not a part of it.

Nowhere Man 05-22-2015 09:42 PM

Just watched the leaked pilot, and I actually kinda dig it.

Granted, it's very shmaltzy, so this really isn't gonna be your cup of tea if you're more into dark-and-gritty superhero stuff, but it's fun. And thankfully, the rom-com stuff is nowhere near as prevalent as the previews make it out to be. It's still there, but it's heavier on regular superhero stuff.

Melissa Benoist is really good, and the rest of the cast is competent (except the guy who plays Winn-- he sucks). Pilots are always kinda hard to get a read on, since everyone's still trying to figure out what the hell their characters are going to be like, so I imagine it'll get better as it goes.

Really, really hope they don't spend the rest of the series off-handedly mentioning "just like your cousin" or "you-know-who in Metropolis" or whatever-- that shit got old fast. And some of the green-screen shots are just painful, but there's only so much you can do when you're trying to do Superman-level special effects on a TV budget.

Overall, it's not as good as the Flash, but if you like Flash, you'll probably enjoy Supergirl too.

Simple Fan 05-22-2015 10:01 PM

Nowhere Man how is it that you feel Gotham is terrible? It and the Flash the two best comic book shows going right now in my opinion.

Destor 05-22-2015 11:21 PM

Gotham is so bad.,,

Nowhere Man 05-22-2015 11:36 PM

I don't like Gotham for a number of reasons, mostly because it's completely unnecessary bloat to the Batman franchise that seriously undercuts Batman's importance to his own mythos-- the whole point of most of the Bat-villains is that they showed up to fill in the vacuum that Batman left when he got rid of all the regular crime. Joker shows up to be the 'better class of criminal' that would have to arise to counter Batman, Riddler shows up because he needs to prove that he's smarter than Batman, Catwoman shows up because she's inspired to dress up and get into trouble because of Batman, et cetera. They're all supposed to be a reaction to him, not the other way around.

Same with Jim Gordon-- he's always been the 'one good cop in a city gone wrong,' sure, but one of the major points has always been that he didn't believe he could make any difference until Batman shows up. In Gotham, he's practically Dirty Harry. Again, he's already heroic long before Batman shows up to inspire anyone, which makes Bruce even less important.

Prequels in general are a terrible idea because they make the world smaller by asserting that connections between characters in the original work existed even before that (i.e. Darth Vader built C-3P0 and Yoda was war-buddies with Chewbacca, or kid proto-Joker was in the same circus that Dick Grayson's family is from), or otherwise make the original less important and thus less interesting. It's the same reason I hated Smallville, with all of Superman's villains and sidekicks running around and forming the Justice League before Clark even so much as thought about wearing a cape. And at least then, it took them several years to get to that point; Gotham has half of the Bat villains up and running in the first season.

That, and a lot of the episode-to-episode plots are stupid and clumsy, and the portrayal of characters like Barbara is just horrendous. I generally like Fish Mooney (who I think should be put into the comics and made canon proper) and I don't mind creepy young Penguin, but the rest of it feels like I'm watching badly put-together fan fiction.

Kalyx triaD 05-22-2015 11:51 PM

Gotham's cool. Shut up.

Nowhere Man 05-23-2015 12:09 AM

This is literally every episode of Gotham:

http://art.penny-arcade.com/photos/i...1050x10000.jpg

Simple Fan 05-23-2015 12:10 AM

I'll give you that they have totally screwed up Barbra, but the rest of the show is solid. None of the main villains from Batman have taken on the true villain roles yet.

Lock Jaw 05-23-2015 03:12 AM

Yeah, I just look at it as its own thing.... I don't care if they introduce villains/whatnot without Batman... Gotham is its own world with its own story.... Same with the people who got upset at Smallville introducing all these elements before Superman.... I don't care, it isn't trying to be an adaptation of Superman, it is its own thing...

But yeah, Barbara is the worst and I hope she doesn't come back....

Personally don't mind the way Gotham does it's thing. I like the role Jim plays, and Penguin is awesome as hell. It does conflict a little with the Batman lore, sure, but if you look at it more as a separate universe most of that becomes irrelevant. I will say that showing the Joker (or who we assume to be the Joker) was just stupid. He's the one villain I can't stand them giving backstory to in anything. His whole allure is that you don't really know who or what he is or what his motives are. Cheapens it when you see him as a punk kid with mommy issues honestly.

On the topic of the thread. Honestly I'm intrigued. Bit disappointed that it's not in the CW-verse since I love those shows but I'll still give it a shot and see if it is any good.

Lock Jaw 10-27-2015 02:23 AM

Watched the pilot.... has potential, I guess.... hard to gauge it on this episode, especially since a lot of it was already in the trailers....

Really hope they stop constantly indirectly referencing Superman....

I hope when Hank Henshaw inevitably turns heel, they bring in Mister Bones....

DAMN iNATOR 10-29-2015 12:40 PM

They'll probably distance her pretty quickly from Supes before long, but of course they have to set up the obligatory backstory for her for those who don't know anything about the Superman "universe".

You could probably try and argue that it's not really for people who don't know about it, but honestly, I don't buy that argument.

Simple Fan 11-07-2015 06:55 PM

Would like to see Jimmy Olsen next to Clark Kent. Kinda weird that Jimmy could probably whip Kent's ass if he wasn't Superman. Jimmy definitely going to bang Supergirl.

Lock Jaw 06-09-2016 08:16 PM

Also being cast for Season 2 are Lena Luthor (who is described as Lex's sister), Snapper Carr, and Maggie Sawyer

Kalyx triaD 06-10-2016 08:33 PM

I'd it to be Tom Welling but that may be a tad too meta with all the world hopping going about.

Lock Jaw 10-11-2016 12:23 AM

Just watched the season premiere and enjoyed it.

Thought that the dude did a good job as Clark Kent/Superman, and is already better than Henry Cavill. Not a fan of the "shoulder clasps" for his cape, especially when Kara's cape and the way it attaches looks so good.

Seem to have nixed the Kara/Jimmy romance for now..... I hope they don't just go back to dragging it out in another will they/won't they thing........ I hated the Kara/Jimmy romance and everything to do with it, so hopefully they just let it die........

I'm gonna miss Cat Grant when she is gone from the show..... can't imagine the show without her.....

McLegend 10-11-2016 06:29 AM

I didn't like it, and I hardly watched it last year.

Everything feels like it just falls flat. All the jokes and dramatic moments just don't work for me. It really does feel like the Lois and Clark from 20 years ago. It does feel like it's the worse show out of the four.

I'll stick with it for a little awhile. At least until the crossover.

Simple Fan 10-11-2016 09:07 AM

Mxyzptlk was superb.

The gay arc with her sister, and her sister in general, is played out. Adds nothing to the show. Each scene is its own pocket arc that has no baring on the rest of the show. Unnecessarily tacked on and fairly insulting.

Lock Jaw 02-21-2017 12:21 AM

Yeah, highly enjoyed Mxyzptlk.

Bobholly138 02-21-2017 07:26 AM

Reading how the second season has been I am kind of glad I never bothered watching it. Season 1 was decent. But nothing amazing. Still it was better than Arrow,Flash and Gotham.

Lock Jaw 10-11-2017 01:17 AM

Premiere was ok. Not a fan of sullen Supergirl. I want positivity and good vibes. Hopefully she gets back to it.

Destor 10-11-2017 09:05 AM

As long as its just one ep of her being sad and then we never mention Mon-El agan it will be worth it

Destor 10-17-2017 07:35 PM

Not a bad ep...but why didnt Martian Manhunter handle the psychic menace exactly?

Lock Jaw 10-17-2017 07:37 PM

I don't like that it has been two episodes and I haven't heard the Supergirl main theme........

Maybe because they seem to have eschewed the "My name is" intros in favour of simple title cards this year for all their shows so far......

Lock Jaw 10-29-2017 04:19 PM

Watched the last episode..... they brought back the "My name is" intro, but for whatever reason they didn't use the Supergirl main theme and had some generic crappy sounding music instead......

Did they lose the rights to the Supergirl theme or something?

Ezra 11-08-2017 11:13 PM

Just started the new season and the opening action sequence was atrocious. Supergirl has been around forever now, been world wide news and criminals are still shocked their eart weapo s dont work on her? Then a random car just sitting in the middle of the road like nothing is going on. Not a good start

Destor 11-08-2017 11:19 PM

Season hasnt been awful...better than arrow but thats a low bar if there ever was one. Some aspects of the show are really clicking and others just drag the show done. Its a manic show as far as my investment is concerned.

Destor 11-08-2017 11:20 PM

Mellisa Benoist remains the shows saving grace

Lock Jaw 11-08-2017 11:46 PM

Really liked the theme..... was a "hopeful" and "inspiring"/"uplifting" tune........

New song they have playing over the "my name is" intro is just "morose"......

Maybe they are doing it "on purpose" With Supergirl being more "emo" this season because of losing Mon-El....... maybe when she becomes happy again they will bring back "uplifting" theme.....

Hopefully before the crossover..... entire crossover will be ruined if I don't get to hear Supergirl music cues......

Season has had a lot pf missteps and the finale had major ADD but the finale scene with kara reminded me that as long as Mellisa Benoits is the anchor of this show im all in. She just nails the tenderness and the humanity needed for the role. If they focus on that aspect the show is a winner for me.

Ezra 07-02-2018 11:08 AM

Finished up. It got a little better but still was a pretty shoddy season overall. The one thing that irks me the most is the writers seem to think they have to beat it over your head how great supergirl really is. Oh look at the self sacrafice, look at her morals, etc. Felt like every episode everyone around kara had to tell her she saved the day and she is such a hero.

I will say they did a good job at the end splitting off into several stories that could be interesting and give good character development to almost all the main players next season. If they are gonna mess about with time travel please take a look at agents of shield and quit letting marvel trump you in story telling.
