The Anime Thread

The Anime Thread.

For people who like anime.

MCEazy 06-22-2008 09:57 PM

lol, well jap powerpuff girls aside, lets list which anime series we're currently watching.

One Piece, Monster, Bleach, Naruto: Shippuuden, Urusei Yatsura, Azumanga Daioh, Getbackers, To-Love RU, xxxholic: kei.

Kalyx triaD 06-22-2008 10:11 PM

Did Naruto's 'All Grown Up' episodes hit here yet? I don't watch the show but I liked the jump in time, and it may have me play catch up with the series. Characters actually aging throughout a series is something I really like to see in animation (DBZ's Gohan being the most famous case). Bleach is something else I wanna catch up on, for some reason Rukia's design is 'attractive' to me.

MCEazy 06-22-2008 10:31 PM

no not yet, the first series is still playing here i believe (i rarely if ever watch dubs so i'm not 100% sure) It was awesome to see gohan go from a lil kid at the beginning of dbz, to 5 years old training w/ Piccolo, beating cell at 10, then teen gohan and Great Saiyaman, then being an adult in GT. Fuk u don't see character aging to that extent much these days.

lol

personally i find inoue more sexy

I think it's the hair.

I usually wait for dubs, though the scripts gets hacked at times, I appreciate the efforts of our homeland studios bringing us some anime. Doing anime VO was a dream job of mine a while back (still kinda is). These days studios are much more respectful during translation, keeping original OP/Eds and scores as well as Japanese linguistics (-Kun, original names, pronunciations).

MCEazy 06-22-2008 10:47 PM

yes and it's certainly good to see companies out here trying to keep anime's intact from the move from japan to a north american audience, it wasn't always like this tho ie. cardcaptors

Kalyx triaD 06-22-2008 11:30 PM

lol I heard Cardcaptors got shredded, that and Yugio. I wouldn't have watched the series anyway but the changes were borderline disrespectful.

U-Warrior 06-22-2008 11:35 PM

Only stuff I've seen outside of adult swim is Akira, Steamboy, Tank Police, Vampire Hunter D, Steam Boy, and Grave of the Fireflies.

Although I do enjoy pretty much everything thats been on AS.

ya, they literately changed the character names and parts of the story, only dub worse is the funimation one piece one.

Akira FTW :D I really want to see GOTF, i heard it was really sad.

Vietnamese Crippler 06-23-2008 12:00 AM

I'm watching way too much crap to mention and quite a bit burned away on DVDs that I still haven't touched.

However, some notable mentions are: Bleach, Naruto Shippuuden, Code Geass R2, Kure-nai, Nabari no Ou, and One Piece.

Too bad Naruto and Bleach are in the middle of fillers right now :'(

4Kids came and raped, literally raped, Yu-Gi-Oh. I'm talking raped it so hard, it wasn't even the same show. They fucking had the balls, the balls, to totally ignore the first season because there were little to know card games invovled in those first episodes. So we never got to learn how Yugi and co got together and everything.

Very pathatic.

I got so pissed that they stopped it right in the middle of the Hueco Mundo arc, I just went online and downloaded all the chapters for the manga after the point they stopped

MCEazy 06-23-2008 12:43 AM

yeh i've seen pics of Nel's true form from the manga, she's fuken hot. Hopefully they'll end this filler arc soonish, it's kinda boring.

Drakul 06-23-2008 01:28 AM

I'm not a hardcore anime lover but I do love Urusei Yatsura, Dragonhalf and Armitage III.
I've tried watching others but I didn't enjoy them.

For Christmas, I got the Salaryman Kintaro box set. I think it's the entire series, actually.
On Christmas morning, when I was opening my gifts, I picked it up as it was still wrapped and my mum tells me my sister told her I liked it so I begin opening it and the first rip reveals its an anime. Not enough to tell what anime it is but enough to know it is one. I instantly think it must be a bunch of Urusei Yatsura, DragonHalf or Armitage dvds and start mauling the wrapping paper to uncover more only to find out it's an anime I haven't heard of. I appreciated the gift and the fact it was anime (at least my family know what I like) and gave it a spin the next day. I think I watched the first two episodes but I never got round to it again.

I might try it out again this week. Is it any good? I prefer quirky anime, usually.

U-Warrior 06-23-2008 01:35 AM

Bleach and Shippuden are the ones I'm following right now. Even reading the mangas every week at onemanga.

Drakul 06-23-2008 01:36 AM

While we're here and since I mention Urusei Yatsura, BBC3 dubbed a few episodes for the special "Japanese Weekend" they had a year or two ago.
They called it "Lum the Invader Girl". Ataru was voiced by Matt Lucas from Little Britain and a few jokes where placed in that only those living in the UK would get.

I've heard of it but have yet to see it, i know its something about a guy who used to be the leader of a biker gang but retired to have a family and now is a single father since his wife died giving birth or something.

lol youre in for a surprise.

jcmoorehead 06-23-2008 09:41 AM

Neon Genesis Evangelion is definately my favourite show. I managed to watch it without knowing anything about it so I didn't know how much people rated it or about the stupid merchandising by Gainax so I was able to enjoy it for what it was.

Watched the first Rebuild Of Evangelion film a short while ago and it was incredible.

Also a fan of .hack//SIGN, Ghost In The Shell (Film & Stand Alone Complex), RahXephon, Hellsing, Big O, Noir, Fullmetal Alchemist, Full Metal Panic, Death Note, Karas.

BigDaddyCool 06-23-2008 10:11 AM

Well, at least the "filler" in the manga is 100% relevant to the entire story and it only lasted for 10 chapters :p

Back to the story next week hopefully :D

Mike the Metal Ed 06-29-2008 10:54 PM

Hello, I am the only person in this thread that watches Yakitate!! Japan.

Requiem 06-30-2008 01:05 AM

I will only watch Anime if it is in Japanese with english subtitles.

That said, the only anime I ever liked:

Gungrave
Helsing
Gundam Wing (the -original- series.. fucking badass)
Afro Samurai (yeah I know.. not really anime in the traditional sense, and not in Japanese, but badass anyways)
Samurai 7 (I think that's the name)

And that's about it.. not big on it.. absolutely hate the kiddy-style stuff with over-exaggerated expressions and retarded characters. I dig more of the gritty realistic, or crazy dark stuff ala Gungrave or Helsing.

Same for me, there are very few series i've seen that are dubs (about 3-4 out of 193).

I love gritty realistic series like monster and dark shows like helsing and elfen lied but also love funny and or romantic comedy's like love hina for instance. I like to watch pretty much any genre of anime except for yaoi and most mecha.

The Genius 07-01-2008 03:04 AM

is ghost in the shell any good? what about blood+?

MCEazy 07-01-2008 03:10 AM

I found the blood + movie awesome and the series boring as hell, both GITS movies are worth seeing but I haven't seen much of Stand Alone Complex (the series) to know how good it is.

Redeemer 07-01-2008 12:53 PM

http://myanimelist.net/animelist/Mazzy_Sensei

Yes i am a nerd. If you havent watched Evangelion then you're a fool. Cowboy Bebop also owns, as does Gungrave and Trigun.

I havent seen any blood+ stuff. Ghost In The Shell movies are ok. Pretty over-rated in my opinion. 2nd one was better than the first.

Kalyx triaD 07-01-2008 01:34 PM

Ghost in the Shell is the shit. The first movie is cool and the second season of the series (2nd GIG) is special to me.

Can someone explain Deathnote to me in 50 words or less? I've yet to catch on to the series.

McLegend 07-01-2008 02:04 PM

Death note is the best Anime ever shown on Adult Swim.

Am I the only one that found Ghost In The Shell dull?

Maybe it's because I prefer bizzare, weird, funny, quirky stuff but I just didn't think much of it.

Vietnamese Crippler 07-01-2008 06:16 PM

I wouldn't say dull. I liked it but it didn't pull me in as quickly as some other shows.

Most likely, and there should be others as well.

Kalyx triaD 11-24-2010 08:33 PM

Gonna rewatch Trigun and Fullmetal Alchemist (first show, not Brothers). Also gonna dive back into Basilisk (only finished 12 episodes) and maybe get into Witchblade.

Fignuts 11-24-2010 08:41 PM

I started watching Claymore on netflix. Kind of done with it already. Just seems boring.

Kalyx triaD 11-24-2010 09:03 PM

Read about that last year. It was praised by a chick and I thought I'd check it out in the future. Now I'm weary...

Elfen Lied is really good.

This Captain Amagi arc better lead to something good.

I really wish I could watch Death Note for the first time again.

Fignuts 11-27-2010 12:13 AM

Amagi is a filler character that is only in the anime, so whatever you are watching isn't going anywhere.

McLegend 11-27-2010 01:07 AM

Yeah that's what I thought. Filler in Anime just might be the worse thing ever. I wish it didn't exist.

Fignuts 11-27-2010 01:55 AM

They are on episode 298 right now.

Like, they could make a show entirely of him dying, over and over, and I'd watch it. As long as it was slow and varied.

Fignuts 11-27-2010 02:51 PM

I think it will be quite a while. Maybe if the spirit king becomes an enemy.

Also, I like where the current arc is going. One thing about kubo is that he's good at creating enigmatic, mysterious characters. It's always fun reading stories that have revelations about them as well. Really like the whole "turn back the clock" mini-arc, and this new arc looks like it might be a similar story, this time involving Ichigo's father.

Vietnamese Crippler 11-27-2010 03:00 PM

I guess this new arc just feels like when the Vizard were introduced, so it feels familiar and a little uninspired.

But I really do want for the arc to dive into Isshin's story.

Fignuts 11-27-2010 03:07 PM

SPOILER: show
Urahara possibly being a villain. Dunno how I feel about that one. It would be brilliant if it could be pulled off right. And Aizen said himself that Urahara was smarter than him, so it is within his capabilities to manipulate everyone on that big a scale. We'll see I guess.

Yeah, nobody would blame you for that one.

I expected heavy character development. Clare gets a little character development in an arc that deals with why she became a Claymore, but everyone else is fucking flat (and she's pretty flat, too). The kid is a whiny bitch to the end, which really killed any shot of character development.

If he had gone from whiny bitch to competent and useful, that'd be one thing. But even when he was fighting a Claymore, he was a whiny bitch.

I finished Fullmetal Alchemist and Gungan Lagomorph recent. I need to check out brotherhood. Gundam Lambda was far more entertaining than I expected.

It was also the gayest thing I've ever seen, but still.

Kalyx triaD 11-30-2010 10:29 AM

Finished Fullmetal Alchemist (1st show) for the second time, this time watching all 51 eps and not missing the 3 or 4 I did years ago. Did not know Johnny Bosch had a cameo eps. Cried a total three times during the series. Love this show.

Now on to Basilisk.

So has anyone seen Black Lagoon? I've had people tell me to watch it. Good/Bad?

I wish I could. I need some suggestions as well. I like anything good, but am a true sucker for the absurd. As such, I'm a huge fan of the original Project A-Ko, Roujin Z, (showing my age) and Dragonball (Z is great and all, but I've always loved the slapsticky nature of the first series.)

Maria Holic is pretty absurd.

Seikon no Quasar (Qwaser of Stigmata)
The story is set on the basis of Saint-Mihailov Academy, an orthodox school of Eastern Japan, and draws heavily on religious references of religion above. Here he follows the trials and difficulties of two of his students, and Oribe Mafuyu Tomo Yamanobe up encounter with a mysterious, silver-haired, Russian boy named Alexander, or Sasha for short. The wells themselves and the whole school in a war between the Church itself and the so-called "followers", a sect of people with powers related to the elements of chemistry. Although based on the common concept shown in magical girl series like Sailor Moon, the story diverges showing acts of extreme brutality, bloodshed, and perversion, and also allows extensive use of fanservice.

One important and controversial themes of the series is that of the sacred substance known as Soma, which allows the Qwasers take advantage of their powers and perform their parts in the battle. This is related to the main objective of followers, the Theotokos of Tsaritsyn, an icon depicting the Virgin Mary breastfeeding the child Jesus, who according to their belief, holds the secrets of the sacred mysteries, such as the resurrection of the Messiah. Linked to this the fact that Soma is, in fact, breast milk, and the Qwasers must be replenished through feeding it, a process which apparently derives pleasure and tires severely women who treat them.

Dude, the guy and his band went joyriding in my friends car and did doughnuts in a parking lot while intoxicated. The bastards didn't even have the common courtesy to say thanks for him letting them use his car. This came after us having to buy his band guitar strings, earplugs, and drumsticks because his band "forgot" them. Dude isn't even a B list celebrity but he touts his shit like he's some supreme being.

Now Jason David Frank, that guy is fucking boss.

Kalyx triaD 12-01-2010 09:05 PM

Somehow your buddy's not a dumbass for buying all that crap lending his car to drunken strangers?

That or there's more to this interesting story than you're letting on.

It was because JYB was a "guest" at an anime convention that my buddy and a mutual friend of ours started 3 years ago. JYB and his "band" Eyeshine were guests and they wanted to borrow a car so my buddy let them borrow his because he was a con chair and wanted to keep them happy. They initially told him they needed for an hour to go get food. An hour turned into 5 and a half.

Kalyx triaD 12-01-2010 09:25 PM

Sorry but that's a lol-fest.

Never lend your car, even to honored guests. Nobody's that honored. Hmmm... I guess I can hold your car when I head up there?!?!?!?

Ermaximus 12-01-2010 09:26 PM

Kalyx, it wasn't my car. It was my friend Jacob's car.

Kalyx triaD 12-01-2010 09:28 PM

I know. I'm scoping the extent of you and your buddy's similar hospitality.

Ah, well, I think he has learned his lesson.

Kalyx triaD 12-01-2010 09:37 PM

No car for me. :(

Kalyx triaD 12-01-2010 09:38 PM

Fucking love anime. In general.

Kalyx triaD 12-03-2010 11:05 AM

Four eps into Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood. Doesn't click with me like the first series, maybe I'm still not comfortable with a 'reboot' so soon. This seems to be sweeping through events from the first series, and maybe that is closer to the manga - but certain events that had effect on me isn't as heavy. Like the Tucker/Nina thing; last time I was on the verge of tears after the multi-episode build up. Now it was wrapped up in a single eps.

Of course knowing how it would end maybe lessening the impact, so I'm eager to get past some of this and experience the unfamiliar material. The series seems more fun overall, and the faster pace is a plus for other moments.

Ermaximus 12-03-2010 11:16 AM

What about it don't you like? It's basically an adaptation of the manga.

Kalyx triaD 12-03-2010 11:21 AM

I think it's the 'newbie' shock after being so used to the first series. I never read the manga, so going through plot points with no filler is throwing me off. Still interested enough to watch through it.
