NCAA Football & Basketball Thread

Haven't seen a college football thread and don't know if a lot of people even watch it but if you do here's the place to talk about it. The season kicked off last night as Michigan lost to Utah in Harboughs return to the college game. #2TCU was winning last I saw against Minnesota.

My favorite team is the Louisville Cardinals, 2nd year in the ACC and they could drop off a bit from last year.

Tell your favorite team and how you think they will do this season to get things going.

road doggy dogg 09-04-2015 11:23 AM

I don't really follow much minor league football but I'm going to try a bit more this year. MSU plays tonight, woo go Spartans

21 Stanford upset by Northwestern 16-6.

Simple Fan 09-05-2015 03:41 PM

Louisville and Auburn kicking off.

Simple Fan 09-05-2015 03:48 PM

And with 2 QBs on the field they throw a interception on the first damn play.

Simple Fan 09-05-2015 07:07 PM

Damn, lost 24-31 if not for a botched handoff in the first half that got taken back for a TD might have been a different outcome. But Lamar Jackson is going to be a star.

SlickyTrickyDamon 09-05-2015 07:16 PM

Pay them salaries.

Simple Fan 09-05-2015 07:20 PM

Why they are college students? Did you get a salary in college? They go to school for free what more do they need?

SlickyTrickyDamon 09-05-2015 07:34 PM

They don't all go to school free. Nor are they given enough time to actually benefit from school. Big Ben graduated like 10 years after his college football days were over.

Droford 09-05-2015 07:36 PM

I'm rooting for Wisconsin to pound Alabama but even if Bama loses they'll still probably be in the playoff

Simple Fan 09-05-2015 07:39 PM

That's on him plenty of guys graduate early. Still don't see the point in paying them. If they did pay them they should make them pay tuition with partof their salery. That way it teaches them how to handle money before the get that big money.

SlickyTrickyDamon 09-05-2015 07:41 PM

The big money is an illusion to keep them from trying to unionize. Only a fraction of them will get anything like it.

Simple Fan 09-05-2015 07:42 PM

Them unionizing is silly to.

Simple Fan 09-05-2015 07:43 PM

Something had to changes if that's the most ever. its just week 1 though the SEC will beat each other up, I dont see them getting 2 teams into the playoff.

Damn. Louisville loses to Houston 34-31. Missed a field goal with 49 seconds left. Freshman QB Jackson just made to many mistakes.

so stupid how the players would go for degree especially big ben? he's set for life lol no need to still get degree

Simple Fan 09-14-2015 12:31 PM

They're not going to play for life and getting a degree is a lot of peoples goal in life. If someone wants to get a degree that's good for them, its not stupid.

Clerk 09-14-2015 12:33 PM

It's not needed. Ofcourse there not going to play for ever but they are making millions $$ i can live off 1 million dollars supporting me im a full time mma fighter wtf.

Simple Fan 09-14-2015 01:00 PM

Yea they make millions, and slot of them go through it quick taking care of family and friends. Also living extravagant lives and living in big houses and driving fancy cars. Its more of a NBA problem. A lot of kids get there degree in football because they have to stay 3 years before going pro.

Clerk 09-14-2015 01:10 PM

Well I've been in talks with the ufc and bellator about a 2 or 3 fight deal fights will probably be around 30-50k each fight not counting bonuses

Louisville playing Clemson tonight. 3 weeks 3 different starting QBs.

Evil Vito 09-19-2015 03:09 PM

UConn had the chance to kick a easy FG to go into OT and set up a potentially huge upset in Missouri. Instead they threw it away on a stupid fake FG attempt.

Like I get the whole "nobody expects us to win, so let's go for it now instead of OT" thing, but shit...just call a regular play then. Half of Missouri's defense dropped back as soon as the ball was snapped because they saw the fake coming.

Droford 09-19-2015 10:26 PM

In a split decision, the three-judge panel ruled that U.S. District Court Judge Claudia Wilken's plan -- which would allow schools to pay athletes as much as $5,000 annually, beyond the cost of attendance, for the use of their name, image and likeness -- was "erroneous."

Their main complaints against paying student athletes was a possible bigger legal mess if college sports lost its amateur status and didn't want the favoritism gap between student athletes and regular students to grow any larger.

Schools can still offer some compensation but it has to be as scholarships and not as cash.

Simple Fan 09-30-2015 03:04 PM

Ehh, I'm not on the pay them annually bandwagon but it seems like its just so the Universities trying to get the players likeness so they can cash in more. If it means the return of NCAA football video games then that would be a plus. Hate it when students athletes get punished for selling off their old jerseys and stuff like that like Ohio State players did a couple years ago. $5000 seems like enough for a scholarship athlete to survive off of for a year.

They're on pace to do what they did last year... choke in the 2nd half of the season after a great start... they were 5-1 last year before they reached the SEC schedule and got their asses handed to them.

Simple Fan 10-11-2015 09:45 PM

They got a good chance to beat Auburn. Louisville struggled against them and it was close. If Kentucky doesn't turn the ball over they should have a chance.

owenbrown 10-11-2015 09:58 PM

Why the fuck is the Governor's Cup game (UK vs Louisville) so late in the year?

Simple Fan 10-11-2015 11:01 PM

I like it there. But its there as part of the ACC-SEC in state rivalry week at the end of the season. Georgia plays GT, Florida plays FSU, South Carolina plays Clemson, and UK plays Uof L.

What the hell is up with Missouri. President resigned today and the students are celebrating. I know they're was something racist put on a wall but what the fuck is with the protest. Should have stripped the football players of their scholarships and called the police on the protesters for loitering.

a) Yes, I can. But you know what would make it sit better with me? If they didn't play like absolute garbage against "the OTHER team up north". Their defensive front uncharacteristically shit the bed, being that Ohio State usually boasts a pretty strong D line perenially even when their playmakers on the other side aren't producing. Why they decided to take a nap on the field during the one game in the season that truly mattered* is beyond me.

b) I can, how ever, always take consolation in the fact that Ohio State not only won out last year, but did it against 1- the almighty SEC heroes in Alabamma, and then 2- against Oregon in a game that one season sooner, wouldn't have happened for the National Championship (and I still don't see how they kept voting Florida State as #1... they weren't really that good, even within in the ACC) . Without the playoffs, the two teams that didn't make it would have automatically been playing for the right to be called number one.

c) Unmentioned, but worth adding, I really hope they eventually at least do the 8 team thing. 16 would be ideal, but at least with 8, you can cover the major conference champs, and then have a couple of spots left for "outstanding" or still undefeated teams that may not make the top 4. There wouldn't be room to screw a team just so a Notre Dame can get consideration, or if you get a school on a few season long hot streak like a TCU or a Boisie State have had in the past, and "nobody" wants to play them, so they don't get the proper respect and will never get enough upvotes when onfield play could prove them right more than pundits. Yes, this would have no bearing on the Buckeyes this year, but it would be a better system overall... provided they don't always try to shoehorn extra SEC teams in those spots.

*in the bigger, immediate playoff picture, I meant. Ohio State/Michigan is still "the" game, even if both squads are winless, coaches have lost their jobs on the strength of that rivalry record in spite of managable or marginally successful seasons.
