The Rogerer 02-24-2016 05:39 AM

I heard it was impossible to be attracted to unreal women.

Week One Field Report:

This is the most I've ever grown in Street Fighter. I've now Dunning Krugered my way to know I've only started.

COMBOS
"What's a combo?" Me before last week. I knew what combos where, but never really thought to apply them. Time in training mode with Dummy set to 'Block after first attack' is all I needed to get started. Went on with Chun Li

I originally started with stuff like cr.lk,st.lp just to get the rhythm of combos.
Early on I discovered cr.mk, legs
and then realised I could cancel the legs into the CA, so that was the first time I had a viable option for my special beyond prayer and wild hope.

Since then I had a brief experiment/look around and have been drilling:
cr.lp, st.mp, cr.mk, HK legs
b.hp, HK legs

I found the 4 part one above pretty hard to get the timing on, I found I could do it very reliably if I paid attention to the hits happening on the screen. That sounds obvious, but when you're first practicing these things it's very easy to zone out. I'm just on the earliest stages of being able to hit confirm with these things.

ONLINE

I break up my training sessions with online matches because you just need the experience. I've largely taken my ego out of it, to not be defined by wins and losses - I caught it creeping back in at times, when I have 2 wins in ranked I start thinking about the 3 consecutive wins trophy and it goes. I tried to have one more win before I finished and it gets you stressed going into a match. My win rate is somewhere just below 50% at the moment, but that should be irrelevant.

WHEN I WIN
I wouldn't say I have too clear of a strategy at the moment. My blocking and punishing is getting there (from non-existent to existent), but my punish will just reflex to a sweep. I know I have to get there with my combos. I can get my CA combo out sometimes but at the moment I've a little too much on my plate to hitconfirm that. I can usually see that the other player doesn't have an effective punish and is generally a bit panicky. Some people just don't know how to follow up at all. Very frequently I'll see Ryu's give up the fireball game when I counter the first with my own. Then they stand and shit themselves while I walk in behind a lp fireball. It's alright, I won't know what to do with you when I get there.

I would say I lose to:
- Good players
- Good old solid Ryu players
- Sometimes very bad players who jump in a lot because they'll just get enough heavies in that I'm not punishing frequently enough and my block/response is off. I see my old self in them.
- Jumping in. Not all the time! I can block it, I think Chun Li's back HK seems very situational and will be tricky to learn to AA with. I wonder if her standard HK is any good for this with it's massive reach. I'm making fast progress with this though.
- Sweeps. I am blocking, but I will reflexively come out with a sweep that gets countered by their sweep (esp. Nash and Cammy). I know I have to work out the timings on these, and the sweep is a reflexive bad habit.
- Zangief: Players frequently have a good arsenal of combos that seem to have massive range and I haven't worked out his hurtboxes yet, so I'm in trouble.

Not that you see that many. Mostly Ryu, a lot of Cammys as of yesterday, some Nashes.

I can see the appeal of Cammy but she's a little too fancy. I know Chun Li is possibly the best, but I like that she's built around just core SF competency and that's what I need.

Chun-Li likes crepes

Fignuts 02-24-2016 06:25 PM

Chun's standing lk is a really good anti air as well. Less situational than back hk, but less damage.

This is a better design for Laura, also not just "uhhhh JEBS"

Kalyx triaD 02-25-2016 08:29 AM

I'd dig that for an alt. Love what she wears now tho.

Kalyx triaD 02-25-2016 08:30 AM

Cammy is not 'too fancy'.

The Rogerer 02-25-2016 08:38 AM

What I mean is that her diverse range of specials would encourage me to try out different stuff when I'm trying just to learn normals and combos. I don't have an easy answer for a string of fireballs with Chun Li so I have to deal with them the hard way. She seems like a hell of a lot of fun to play with though.

Kalyx triaD 02-25-2016 04:14 PM

Block or jump over fireballs.

Fignuts 02-25-2016 07:11 PM

Her v skill is built to wreck projectile zoners from across the screen. Granted, it's too slow to use on reaction to a fireball, but if they're throwing them willy nilly it should be easy to predict, and you can hit them with a big combo.

Fignuts 02-25-2016 08:41 PM

Think I'm going to try the hori fight commander. Hate the ps4 controller. Share button too close to the d-pad. Occasionaly slip and go to the ps4 menu whilst my opponent lays into me. Also find the d-pad itself awkward, with it being four buttons instead of one solid piece.

Still considering a stick down the line, but this will do for now.

Kalyx triaD 02-25-2016 10:39 PM

Never touched the Share button. Plant the upper center of your thumb slightly below the dpad center.

The Rogerer 02-26-2016 03:24 AM

I've never hit the share button, are you using the ball of your thumb on the dpad?

My dark secret is that I've been using the analogue stick. It's been alright actually, and the d pad seems okay but my old urges were to press too hard. I usually practice between both and might go back to pad depending on how I feel.

The best advice is to find a way to relax what you're doing with your thumb. I won't talk anyone out of buying a pad, but sometimes it can be like wanting to spend your way out of a problem.

Also I cope with fireballs alright. Nobody goes hard on them anyway

Fignuts 02-26-2016 06:23 AM

Nah I still plain don't like that style of dpad. Plus, I like having all six buttons on the front of the controller, and ppp and kkk on the right trigger.

The Rogerer 02-26-2016 08:13 AM

It's not ideal but you can thank nintendo.

Tell me about your travelling thumb though

Fignuts 02-26-2016 06:59 PM

Honestly has a lot to do with my awkwardNess on that dpad. Dunno.

The Rogerer 02-28-2016 09:02 AM

I hit bronze. Not sure exactly how the league system is determined, I seemed to be the last rookie standing anyway as everyone I've faced against for then last few days has been bronze. Have all the Cammys, etc gone up to Silver? Its all Ryus

Think it's 500LP for every division and no, it's Ryus all the way up.

Rarely ever fight a Cammy even when I get a gold league mis-match. It's all Ryu, Karin, Bison and Nash.

The Rogerer 02-28-2016 02:30 PM

Thanks, I worked it out after dropping back down, and then going up again after a flowchart Ken. I comfortably beat the flowchart Ken.

Kalyx triaD 02-28-2016 04:28 PM

Kill the flow chart pussies.

Emperor Smeat 03-01-2016 05:31 PM

Based on recently leaked concept art for the game, Capcom considered the idea of going more in a Tekken route for character designs for Street Fighter V.

Heisenberg 03-02-2016 01:26 AM

Is there a YouTube of the storyline like Mortal Kombat did with their 360/PS3/PC game? Plus MKX. I would like to view that, but also try and catch a warning if it's super good or bad

Kalyx triaD 03-02-2016 02:14 AM

Story isn't out yet. The prologue stuff with just voice over art is on youtube tho.

You do raise a point about how pointless it is going all out for a story mode in a fighting game when people can just youtube it. Big cinematic story modes just don't work for a fighting game unless you go the arksys model. DoA5 story mode even had a decent presentation but we're talking about a mode with little to no replay value. That to me makes it a waste of funds.

The Rogerer 03-02-2016 03:29 AM

All visual entertainment is then pointless. Actually, this would come the closest tbf.

People want arcade mode because they do. Survival mode is such a slog.

Kalyx triaD 03-02-2016 07:15 AM

That does not invalidate visual entertainment lol. This is a point predicated on the subject being a fighting game. I don't say youtube halo or uncharted cutscenes. There's a reason.

The Rogerer 03-02-2016 08:22 AM

Heisenberg doesn't want to play the game but he wants to watch the story mode, so there's an intrinsic value to it. Your point seemed to be that if it was watchable on youtube it was a waste of money. Hence all visual art, which can be youtubed. Even if it doesn't have replay value, a cool story mode works for the brand.

Halo's story is fantastically unremarkable but yet people buy wholesale into the sacred lore of The Master Chief and read 50 books for some reason.

Kalyx triaD 03-02-2016 09:17 AM

The story of halo manifest almost directly thru gameplay. Fighting games by design can't do this because fighting games by design were not meant for that. It would be adding cgi cutscenes to tetris. Pointless.

Sakurai addressed exactly this when he seen all his brilliant Smash 3 cutscenes get youtube'd. He very specifically said he wouldn't waste time on such a thing again. And he didn't. And Smash 4 still has tons of shit for single player.

Heisenberg 03-02-2016 09:20 AM

I will purchase Street Fighter down the line, but I'd get an earful if I bought a $60 game when my newly built PC made it possible to play the 140+ games in my Steam library. I just didn't want to wait to watch it, big fan of the series and their backgrounds.

The Smash 3 cutscenes were awful, as was that mode. That's neither here nor there.

It's not pointless though. I know you're not into isolated story but that doesn't make it worthless. Pretty much all games do this anyway.

Street Fighter can have cool cutscenes in it. You can put them at the end of an arcade mode.

You can't watch them on Youtube if they don't exist.

They did this back with SF II as well. Blanka being "Jimmy" and being reunited with his mother. Chun Li visiting her fathers grave after avenging his death by defeating Bison, etc.

It'd be a neat feature for those who aren't obsessed with online or stick to online only.

Heisenberg 03-02-2016 10:45 AM

What's so different from viewing YouTube vids and Twitch feeds? I don't see anyone crying foul over getting to see Premium paid content for free

Kalyx triaD 03-02-2016 11:28 AM

No consumer would complain.

It's about the worth of production.

Don't even understand why people would bitch about something like this being included.

It takes production away from single player modes that have proven to be replayable for a fighting game.

The Rogerer 03-02-2016 04:27 PM

I'm energised about the Q4 reports too, fellow consumer
