Fallout 25th anniversary

So, the first Fallout game released 25 years ago today, on October 10, 1997. Feel free to use this thread to share your favorite memories from the games, thoughts and whatever else.

Never played it

Fa1, 2 and T are classics.

I will do just that, because I have been a huge fan since the original demo set in Junktown that released in 1996...

It had its talons in me ever since the opening notes to "Maybe" hit. Part of it was how full the introductory lore felt, part of it was the retro-futurism styling, part of it was Ron Pearlman's narration. It was just different than anything I had experienced up to that point... and that was BEFORE the introduction of the character creation screen. Sure, you were kinda locked into what you could do in the demo, but it was more about the presentation of possibilities and what it meant. It was my introduction to "choice matters" well before that became a gaming marketing cliche that is kind-of oxymoronic anymore.

I mean, now, it's more like a "proof of concept", but back then, it felt like THE POSSIBILITIES WERE ENDLESS! One of the quests included was Dogmeat sitting outside of Phil's house, and you had to figure out how to get him to move so the poor guy could go home. At the time, a lot of games were bound to the "adventure game logic", so you would need to do some elaborate puzzle and solve a set of fetch quests to get some dumbass item to Rube Goldberg your way into solving the mystery of pest removal. However, here was a straightfoward list of options: you could basically attack/kill him (which agaiin was the "obvious" course of action at the time), feed him to get him to move, or throw on the Leather Armor for the Mad Max reference and get him to follow you. My 16 year old mind was blown.

Then, even the meta got me. The first game was heavily populated by top notch voice talent, from Tony Shalhoub to Keith fucking David. The story about how Fallout 1 started life as the original Wasteland 2, which all came full circle by the eventual Wasteland 2/3 being born from lack of Fallout IP licencing (and similarly, fostered the birth of The Outer Worlds) is fascinating to me. The SPECIAL system we all know and love came out of the neccessity to come up with something to replace GURPS, which they ended up losing permission to use.

Anyway, I could gush all night... but instead, I think I might go see if I can just install the final retail release disc on my current laptop.

I have virtually zero expertise in this arena but I'm going to blather like an idiot anyway. The only experience I ever really had with the franchise was my buddy being obsessed with Fallout 3. I knew about the prior titles on PC but there other games grabbing my attention at that time. Fallout 3 looked like a pretty impressive step forward, but the more I learned about the game, the less I wanted to give it a shot. Open world always puts me off unless there's an element that tickles me in an entertaining way. It just never seemed like anything I'd be a fan of. I have no question that I'd praise it purely on technical grounds, but that's about all I can say for it.

I appreciate the input, and with that being said, however, if you ever find yourself with hardware that can run it, I’d definitely recommend Fallout: New Vegas.

PLayed FO76 for about 20 minutes yesterday. It was my first time playing since December of 2021.

They've made a TON of improvements to the game, wowzers. Think I might start playing this a bit more. Got my ass kicked by some super mutants because I couldn't remember my buttons.

drave 10-13-2022 10:48 AM

Finished up the last Brotherhood mission last night. The one where you had to go to some labs to learn about shit, name escapes me right now.

I ended up letting the scientists live. I recall getting my ASS handed to me in that facility last time I went.

Leveled up a bit and have a legendary perk that sometimes causes my melee hits to add lil splosions to them. That perk is nuts. 2-3 hitting most mobs, even legendary ones.

Got a BUNCHA shit for a reward, but promptly shut it down without going through everything. Playing this the past few days has reminded exactly how much I really enjoy the environment and game itself.

I remember two perks somebody mentioned in Fallout 3 that I thought were hilarious and cool. The Mysterious Stranger and something about being friendly with animals.

Yeah, I had an idea for a new camp build so im back into this too. Gotta unlock the big prefab thats halfway through the score board though.

drave 10-13-2022 11:25 AM

Dude, I need to up my build game bigtime. I went to my "camps" I had established before, and I was definitely in a hurry, as they were just a square big enough to fit in the shit I needed. Didn't even have a roof or locked door.

The ultracite batteries are at 100% charge, so I can go to The Pitt, but since it requires multiple people, I wanted to read and get my shit together so I'm not totally useless.

I don't even have regular power armor I use, mainly because I don't regularly find a steady amount of cores to use. I will have to look through my stash, as I believe I have a set or two.

Fignuts 10-13-2022 11:30 AM

You can do the Pitt solo. The last optional objective where you have to save people from a storm or defend them from trogs is damn near impossible to get done without help though.

Fignuts 10-13-2022 11:37 AM

If you complete the secpnd brotherhood questline you get the Hellcat power armor, which is the best in the game.

I learned a lot of building tips from watching youtube videos. TNG 76 is a really good one, as he shows the whole build process and you pick up a lot of cool tricks.

One thing I picked up early on is smaller but more filled spaces look better than big sparsely filled ones. Early on I made really big constructs, but the budget didnt allow me to fill it, so it looked kind of off. Making things smaller and filling it with decorations and clutter makes it fit in with the game world much better.

Ill be on tonight if you want to do the pitt or something.

drave 10-13-2022 12:52 PM

Sweet man. I know I have to pop on and off quickly because dad stuff, but let's do eeeeeeet.

Hellcat armor - that's what I got. But I think it was just regular armor and not the power armor. I plan on doing a lot more with the brotherhood. They had some of the best quests in the game so far IMO. I'm level 56 right now, maybe 57 after I turned in that quest?

Don’t worry if you need to step away from the game in the middle of a Mission, because the objectives are checkpointed. Even if you close the game, you will be able to pick up where you left off the next time you log in.

^
Sweet! This is re: expeditions.

Fignuts 10-13-2022 01:09 PM

Nah, its definitely power armor, but its the plans. You have to craft it, so it won't be in your inventory. Theres also the hellcat mercenary outdit but thats just cosmetic.

drave 10-14-2022 09:42 AM

Chainsaw. lololol. CHAAAAAAAINNNSAAAAAAAWWWWSSS!!!

Seriously, that shit was fucking fun. Feel like Doom Guy should make a big impact like the power armor jumps do.

Sorry for the quick exit, it was time to put the lil ones down and they were resisting. A few RKO's later, they slept well.

This will be the bulk of my weekend gaming. I'm down to do whatever, whenever. I don't always see the party invites in-game, so feel free to msg me or xbox party or whatever. Almost missed your inv last night, son called it out.

Fignuts 10-14-2022 01:42 PM

Honestly good that you did. I can grab a bunch of steel now and craft more ammo. Gonna need it for the last fight.

drave 10-17-2022 08:25 AM

Gonna have to weave in some shotgun perks. Shouldn't be difficult, as I used to run a double-barrel build long, long ago.

Had a combat shotgun drop that was lvl 50 so I kept it for a while. Had quite a bit of Legendary currency and cores saved up so I gave it some mods.

Armor penetrating shotgun that does additional damage to enemies below 40% health.

FUCKING.SICK

The chainsaw still melts. Need to go find some more though, so I can mod it and make it even better. I switched up my melee to make it even stronger, so it's almost comedic at times, the way I just tap the chainsaw rather than a full rev. Just makes me lol, like walking around and just "zzzzzt" "zzt" "poke".

My wife saw me rip up the entire population of Lewisburg and was slightly disturbed at my maniacal laughing. She said "Should you be doing that in front of our 7 y/o daughter??

So I asked. She said "Mommy, daddy's chainsaw is awesome and they're just zombies. He's keeping America safe" and I fucking lost it :D

Some games I play, she really enjoys. Also, had my wife sit through a nuke with our surround sound. That shit was bonkers. Was putting the kids in bed and she yelled from the front room that the nuke alert was going off.

The audio is great. Normal audio...... dead silence for 1-2 seconds, then you hear the bomb, then the detonation and then chaos. Fun stuff.

Set up a vending machine for the first time ever in an effort to liquidate my stash and inventory. My stash is damn near at capacity and I think its all the ammo I used to hoard when it was harder to come by. Need to minimize my inventory too..... usually only have 50 open carry weight before leaving and dunno why.

drave 10-17-2022 08:25 AM

Also was completely oblivious to any invites you sent, if you were on at all.

Yeah, Animal Friend, at the first level, simply means that certain types of animal enemies simply won’t attack if not provoked; the second level makes them help you in combat unless it‘s against another animal.

Mysterious Stranger just occasionally has a mysterious guy show up on occasion who helps you in combat when using V.A.T.S. (“Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System”).

Also, I highly recommend checking out the article about FNV’s Miss Fortune perk. She’s not exactly what I’d call an antithesis to Mysterious Stranger, but she tries to cripple/paralyze/knockdown your enemies as opposed to outright killing them. As part of the introductory bit of the article states, “Appearing only in V.A.T.S., she has the ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.” 🤣

A bit down, you can take a 7 question test to see what faction you would fit into best.

Some cool camp stuff coming to season 12 in fallout 76. That, combined with finally getting inspiration on what to do with the Pitt shelter has me back on it. Gonna need to put work into my second character since I've filled all the camp slots on my main.

They also finally got rid of all the OP legacies that people were using to hog all the enemy xp at events and 1 shot bosses. The game has seen an influx of returning players because of it.

drave 01-27-2023 08:43 AM

right after the uninstall xD
